I got a chance to try Project Downfall at PAX East last month and it was another great surprise at the show that I felt was worth highlighting.

Like the title says, to boil the game down to the essentials I'd say Project Downfall is Hotline Miami filtered through Max Payne. It follows the Hotline Miami design of short, highly replayable and quickly reloading, stages that are focused on killing everyone in your way with whatever you can get your hands on. There are even the interstitial chapters for exploration and narrative. The Max Payne influence comes in the form of pills you take that primarily, in the demo at least, gave you bulletime so you could dodge and nail every shot. There were other pills found later in the demo that continued the effect as you slayed rather than being locked to a timer.

Driving the combat is the hyper-violent nonsense that fuels titles like Hotline Miami. Enemies crumble, are blown back and explode into gibs with every bullet. It works well with the blown out audio/visual design, and on that note there are plenty of customization options for the scanlines including the ability to disable them if that's not your preference. Though the game leans very heavily into that "old" style which I imagine is hit or miss with people in general. I love it personally.

I choose to play with a controller and while it was a bit spotty at times (controls aren't final) I was able to finish the first main set of levels with some practice and completed a short preview of the newer content coming to the early access release (a casino level), so it'll hopefully control well with the later console release. The PC version was launched into early access last month so it's still a work in progress but it's something folk should be keeping an eye on.

I like the look of it. Hotline Miami is a great series so more things like it is good to see. Just a shame I don't have any of those systems lol.

Remember seeing gameplay of this a while ago and the style is awesome. Glad to hear the gameplay is shaping up really well.

This isn't a port beg (because I own all the consoles) but I wonder how they choose which platforms they put the game on.

I'm rather split on the art direction. the environments look great, but the character design clashes with it so much

I like its visual style and wouldn't mind seeing more games like that, especially how vibrant the colors are. Anyway I hope it has some intense levels like Hotline Miami does

I played a bit of it at Pax East; I was shit because they didn't have inverted mouse implemented yet, but it seemed really promising. Looking forward to this one.

That art design is FANTASTIC. Thanks for bringing it to my attention OP.

How is the soundtrack? I am at work and can't listen, but some impressions on that aspect would be nice.

How about the story? Is there going to be one, or is its focus purely on gameplay?

There is a narrative. Between levels you are put into areas to explore and talk to NPCs. The steam page gives a bit more detail on this on how the plot can diverge...

You are a regular, middle class citizen. By day, leading your ordinary, rinse-repeat corpo-routine life, with your lovely girlfriend Olga by your side, a well paid job and crib with an amazing view. What more could a guy want?

By night however, you give your contribution to society as a self-proclaimed dealer of justice, dispatching all sorts of scum with extreme prejudice… Or, at least that is what you think...

Main missions will be accessed from your car outside the apartment. In one of the earliest updates after the games Early Access release, the area will be expanded with a freeroam hub which will open up to other parts of the city with optional missions with progression of the game.

With addition of new levels during Early Access, the plot will branch out at certain points leading down alternate paths/levels. Certain levels will only be accessible with certain restrictions (ie depending on timeline, if certain character was discovered/spared/killed and son on). The game will offer multiple endings.

The rogue like FPS.... A quality sub genre if there ever was one!!! Happy to see another entry.

These aren't procedurally generated levels and the game isn't a "one run" experience. It's as much a roguelike as Hotline Miami is.

Would be a lot more interesting if they hadn't just straight copied the Hotline Miami aesthetic.

They copied it, yes, but also expanded upon it and made it even more distinct. I have no problem with developers interpreting and reinventing unique ideas into something new.

It's not like Hotline Miami's art design is some played out trope (at least in my humble opinion).

I'm not seeing anything that sets it apart from HM other than the change of perspective.

Nice find OP. I wonder how this one slipped by me. I've been watching the upcoming Steam games list like a hawk.

I really love the cyberpunk pixel art aesthetic that's been gaining popularity lately.

That's labeled a PS4 trailer but it's also on PC, they just meant the inspirations are starting to show across other games as of late.

I get it, but it seemed a bit silly to include a game that is only PS4 and PC, with a PS4 trailer no less, in a thread that is about a game that seems vastly different.

Ever since Sony lost Shahid Ahmad, Adam Boyes etc and the external team of SSM went to Annapurna there has been a lack of Sony oriented indie games, if at all. PS4 still gets most indies simply because it is the biggest console platform.

Maybe a nice thread idea to discuss Sony indie policy from early current gen to now.

Pretty large update for the game just released.

Now moving on to what's new:

- Around 12 new levels. Unlocking conditions will vary. For example to get to the Terminator "ILL BE BACK" level you'll need to put in some work. Whereas for others it will depend on your state of mind, or previously chosen route/choice.

Ie if you kill a certain co-worker you are practically blocking off a few optional missions (he won't cal you when you are at work) but on the other hand... Crossing a total pill usage threshold might take you to different levels from time to time. Choosing a certain path, or liberating a certain station might give you the opportunity to visit work or possibly other levels as well if you listen in on the correct news... and so on

- Awareness system. Now you will have visual feedback on enemies approaching from your blindside as well as direction hit indicator

- updated aiming system. Last update we introduced a new, centered aiming system but the tracers were still from the old hybrid method which would result in tracers not hitting where the bullet registered. Right now the tracers have also been rewritten for the new method so it should be all point and shoot from now on (of course, taking into consideration the weapons own spread/precisions stats)

They need to make the enemies more aggressive it always looks like they are just standing around

Some of the video clips are in the non-aggressive areas where you talk around and can talk to folk (though you can kick off a fight if you want). AI for actual levels is apparently being addressed though.

- Fixing AI issues (sometimes not catching aggro despite AI settings or getting stuck/shooting at corners).

- updates, refinement and tweaks to current content, especially AI (AI is selectively adjusted for each enemy per stage to give the best experience. They react on various factors instead of basic triggers. So they react on sight, hearing players footstep radius, firearm hearing radius, death yell radius etc).

This doesn't utilise music nearly as well as I would have hoped. It sounds flat and too tame. The decision to have 2D enemies in a 3D environment is just strange. Shame, the concept sounded great.
