It's almost here!!!!!

So the game comes out in a few hours in Japan so I created this thread for people who'll import the game or live there and bought it.
I personally preorded the limited edtion from amazon.jp so I'll start my playthrough next week..

Sorry that there is not a proper OT but I didn't have time to make one :/.
I promise that I'll create one for the western release though xD.

So far the game was well received by critics so I'll looking forward reading player impressions too.
I'll be updating the thread with new info and post the IGN review too when it comes out as it will be the first scored review of the game
well..except Famitsu's of course :P

So the last live stream before the release finished a few minutes ago and they announced some DLC costumes for the characters and BGM music
from the previous games you can select in-game.

A lot of images so I'll put them in spoilers

They also announced a season pass where you can buy all of these for around 30$
Plus some more PS4 themes

They also showed the cast for the theatrical version of the game
here is the cast:

Finally they announced that the anime version releases on April 2020
Here's a sneak peek

Sanzingen did a great job I think.Really looking forward to it :)

Looking forward to the localization, so will only be sparingly checking this thread. I hope all who will be playing soon have a good time with the game!

That cosplay shows how good the big breasted lady could have looked without the ridiculous side-boob.

I'm not grabbing the Japanese release and will wait for the English localization, but I just want to wish everyone importing the game tons of fun. I will peek inside this thread from time to time to read some impressions, so I hope it won't get too spoilery, heh.

Have fun! Sega fans have lots of reasons to be happy with a new Sakura Wars, Streets of Rage 4, Shenmue III and Monster Boy games :)

Wow, I somehow completely missed that they released a demo on the Japanese PSN store for it. I have to check it out.

I decided to wait on that one, already have other games to play for now.

I debated getting it now but I think it's wiser to wait for the localization for once.

I liked the demo overall but I hate being pressed for time when questions are asked :/

For anyone wanting to play the demo keep also in mind that I'm working on a translation guide with all the different dialogue options included.
I'm gonna release it very soon, so keep an eye on it.

Woo didn't see this topic so minor repost. The survey PSN theme was released last night, and it plays the new theme song! But that said, my limited edition shipped yesterday. Should be arriving tomorrow.

They really went to town with the presentation; animations, graphics, cutscenes, music... It's all top-notch. I hope it pays off for them.

Did we actually get a localization confirmation? I know the SEGA staff was hinting at it on Twitter but not sure if it was ever concrete. Regardless Ive only ever played the 1st and 5th so I would love to see this come state side.

Played through the first chapter yesterday up to the point where you unlock the card game and I have to say that my feelings on this are really mixed.
While I enjoyed the demo, the big group of flying enemies in the first battle stage reminded me how undercooked the fighting part feels.

As for the story, everyone loves an underdog, but so far it's not really clicking with me. Maybe it's because how exaggerated it all feels, even by anime standards.

My biggest problem so far is that sometimes dialogue choices don't play out at all like what you'd expect.
Trying to be nice? Tough luck, characters will read it as sarcasm. This is my first Sakura Wars game, so maybe you need to be in a certain mindset, but so far I'm surprised that some conversations have gone south, despite choosing what has felt like the best answer.

Of course there are good things about the game too. The general atmosphere, the expressiveness of the characters during dialogues, Sakura in general, but I'm curious how I'll feel after a few more hours with this title.

Oh, one more thing. I assume they wanted to reuse the Sumire voice actress since it's the same character and all, but wow, she sounds old. The character looks like she's around 30, but sounds like 60+ year old (the VA is only 5X, so that's extra weird). I usually don't care much for voices, but in this one case the dissonance is pretty huge.

About Sumire I've heard that she gives the performance of her life in this game so you should really cherish it :P.
Reviews of the game mentioned we should keep a handkerchief with us just in case xD.
As for your comment about the choices that's how the old games were too, but again that's one of its charms, you have to figure out each character by yourself.
Also if you become a fan of the series you'll want to do all of the playthroughs, one for each girl.
I usually choose the main heroine for my fist playthrough(in this case Amamiya Sakura) because it's the safest choice for the first time :P.

Nice! I really like that large artwork by Tite Kubo. Quite disappointed that Sega didn't ask him to draw the cover art but we get some 3D stuff instead.
It would have been quite something if Sega would have ported all the games onto PS4 and that those discs sporting eps I to V covers would be the actual games wrapped up in a superb total set collection. Do those discs contain previous games OSTs?

My biggest problem so far is that sometimes dialogue choices don't play out at all like what you'd expect.

Yes that's really a typical thing in the series! You have to figure out how each character behave and what they like to hear. Which in my opinion make things much funnier than flat dialogues. Glad to see it's still present in this new episode.

That's the thing, the girls are anything but the usual trope. But as everyone said, it's up to you to figure out their quirks.

Seeing Teito/Ginza brought to life with modern technology is breathtaking

Also, tanaka Kohei really nailing the soundtrack once again.

Just finished the first session of Chapter 3 and want to say that they really have nailed the adventure part of this game. The dialogue options, interactions and characters are so interesting to play and see. Being a series fan, i nearly cried when listening to some of the music. I just don't want to put down my controller because the game is so good.

Btw, has anyone experience those heart-shaped bonding event? Unqiue animations, fully voiced interactions last for around 10 mins. I just did mine with Claris and it is fantastic. It has been a long time since a virtual girl can make my heart beat so fast.

So how is this game? Seeing the low ratings on Amazon and Kakaku stopped me from buying this game on my home from work Friday night. Reading the impression above, it seems good but would like to read from other people. If it's good, I'll go pick it up now.

I am the one above you so don't know if you want to hear more from me, but this game does have flaws like mediocre action sections, some scenes are not voiced and the main story of chapter 1 and 2 are kinda clichƩ (in line with past entries and I personally like them). Chapter 3 is where the game opens up and main story starts to get more interesting. Experience with past titles may also affect how you view this game.

The communication (heart blossom) events are hot and heavy as hell holy. Feels like I could fall for every single girl. Done one for Sakura and Claris so far, doki doki.

I think it nails it best that the adventure part is the best it's ever been. How massive in scale Ginza is, and the various dialogue options. Along with how all the expressions are full of personality and detail. Battle definitely leaves something to be desired. It's not the same not being able to control the entire Kagekidan, even if the SRPG parts were nothing to write home About.

Is this developed by RED? Are they even still around?
No it’s developed by a combination of the Sonic team a Valkyrie team of Sega.
Nagoshi also helped the team with the battle system.
I think Sega does not own Red company any more.

I think if you’ve played the previous games and know whats Sakura Wars is all about, honestly you’ll love this game. It’s one of Sega’s best games after the Yakuza series.
But if you buy the game for the Action only you’ll be disappointed as it’s the worst aspect of the game and the that needs more work to be done in the sequels.
I mean, I know some japanese players who skipped all the dialogue and cutscenes of the game and finished the game pretty quickly...That’s some waste on money...
Also keep in mind that these games have high replayability because you’ll wanna see all the girls endings as the characters are really good and you’ll get fond of them at the end of the game.

Actually besides the combat one thing kind of disappointing but more personal opinion is Sumire. She's basically Ayame/Kaede but voiced by an older Michie. But I get it's years later and she's matured now. I just miss her ojou antics.

About that you don’t have to worry about it.
As the game progresses, Sumire progresses as a character too and brings back many of her old characteristics. That’s what I heard but please let me know your opinion as you progress

Btw I forgot to mention earlier about the ratio of Adventure:Battle and it seems it seems that for an average player who’ll just do the events on screens it’s gonna be 60-40.But of course the adventure part has many more things to do and search for so it can increase to something like 70-30

Continuing that Sega/Atlus style tradition of announcing costume DLC that costs as much as the retail game... and this is just what's announced so far, there will surely be more.

I am interested in the game, but I may just replay the one on Wii/PS2 that made it stateside and then wait till the base game is heavily discounted (and never buy any of the costume DLC)

Well they come as costume plus bgm sets. The nostalgia value alone of having the old osts is massive. Already purchased the season pass šŸ˜‚

When Kamiyama was pushed over by Claris, I was so immersed and literally don't know what should I do and where should I look. My heart was racing and my brain just got offline for 2 to 3 seconds. Hopefully this does not sound too dramatic, but that is some very, very powerful presentations. Animations are top notch and Hayami's voice really stole my heart away.

I played the demo after seeing this thread.

Gotta say, I loved it. Yeah the battle stuff was the weakest part to me but the first part of the demo was great. Lots of funny moments, characters are very expressive and some funny choices and incidents.

Gonna buy this when it comes out in English I think.

Thanks for those first impressions! Sad about the fights part. Every body was worried about the game's presentation and it seems to be confirmed that it is disappointing. Can't remember I have read Nagoshi said they've been testing dozens of various fights mechanisms to get to the current one, but it seems that a more or less minor update on the existing episodes 3 to 5's system would have been a more satisfying option.

Still looking forward to it tho!

I don't think the change from tactics to action is the problem. It's more the fact that the action part isn't as polished as the adventure part.
It can even be better if they do some QoL changes like add a lock-on system or between more than one party member.
Maybe they'll even add some of those for the Western release+ a difficulty selection.

Even with all its flaws the controls at least are pretty smooth and comboing is fun.You can see that Nagoshi helped the team with this.
So at least now the have something that can step on it improve upon in the future.
It just needs more work and attention.

I have seen multiple people on other forums said shits get real in Chapter 6. So I am not surprised by the spoiler ban.

Edit: It may be fun to know which ending you people are going after in your first playthrough. Personally, I am going after Claris. Her heart bonding event really wowed me. And being someone who loves creating, she being a writer is very attractive to me. Btw, based Saori Hayami. She really breathes life into Claris.
