Things are expected to change soon with Sony winding down PS Now as a distinct service and changing things up with PS+ Extra/Premium. But before that I thought it would be interesting to take a snapshot of the final state of PS Now and compare its modern library with XGP.

Takeaways
  • Library size is roughly equal at 394 PS Now and 389 XGP
  • PS Now is heavily weighed towards 2016 releases with XGP weighed towards 2020 releases (for 2022 games PS Now has 1 release and XGP has 19)
  • PS Now has mostly 60-79 games with XGP having mostly 70-89 games (unscored games not included)
Data
It was a lot of data to sort through and remove wrong consoles so let me know if there are errors.

Yeah I expect this to change pretty radically come June. My biggest curiosity will be when PS Plus gets PS5 exclusives. 1 year? 2 years?

My biggest curiosity is how Sony will make a compelling argument for 3rd parties to launch day 1 on the service when Sony won't do it themselves. Money might be a big incentive, but we all know that MS also has deep pockets.

I think timing couldn't have been better for Microsoft. Pretty soon 3rd parties launching day 1 on Game Pass won't be as critical as it once was. Xbox first party will be full steam ahead and they won't have to rely so much on 3rd parties.

Can you download all of the games on Playstation Now?

Edit: Reread op. Maybe just the PS4 games?

Nice analysis, let's see when the New Plus launches how it's gonna look like. I think exclusives will come to the service one year after launch

Lines up with market perception I'd say - GP offers newer, better games.

Edit: I will say though, I didn't expect post-2020 releases to be so lopsided (90 - 6).

Interesting data. I wonder how it would look of you split it between first and third party.

Both services have their merits, but I'm not currently subscribed to either, might consider it in the future.

For the first-party PS4 games it was trending towards adding them twice - first for a 3-month period after a while, then permanently later. That wasn't universal but was becoming a bit of a pattern. They might replicate that on the new service, so they could end up having something like first-party games going on to the service after a year, but only for a while, then then coming back again a year later.

Ps now library is soo bad, I usually spend 2 hours looking for a game and then end up downloading something and delete it after few minutes.. PS3 streaming library i the best but the problem it's streaming only.

I always thought GP had more games than that and PS Now less. Makes sense why Sony is aiming for the up to 400* PS4 and PS5 games number for PS+ Extra, but PS+ Premium gets pretty crazy when you think about the PS+ Extra and BC stuff of Premium jumping up to almost double what PS Now and GP currently has.

Gonna be interesting to see the collection Sony builds for Extra and Premium tiers as the PS Now selection has overall been weak, but PS+ Collection is quite strong for the limited options there.

PS+ is going to need a fucking radical increase in quality to get my attention. Microsoft set a really high benchmark. At first I thought maybe I should hold off on Horizon Forbidden West, then realized "who am I kidding?".

Would also be interesting to compare the total value of every game in the service.

Cant wait to see an update to this after ActiBliz games get added.

I don't think it changes the numbers as much as you'd think. Maybe 20-25 more games. It's a big deal because it's all the CoD games and some other big hitters ofc.

Outside of CoD and blizzard there's surprisingly few Activision games still available for purchase. So many old licenced games that aren't listed on digital store fronts anymore.

On pc via gog there's a back catalog of Sierra stuff but not on console anyway.
