Woah. Those are monster numbers. I think I had pegged PS4 at hitting 100m lifetime when it launched but that'll surely be blown past now. Also great to see Spidey's numbers. Well deserved. Congrats to both!

Where does this stand in the pantheon of Sony PlayStation consoles so far?

And TLOU2, GOT, DS, DG, and who knows what other exclusives that haven't been announced are still on the way, ps4 will easily do 150 million by the end of the console lifecycle.

Anybody know how many PS2 were sold in the same lifespan?

I found that at the end of 2005 fiscal year, PS2 has 87 million sold. Thats really impressive for PS4.

PS2 doesn't have a comparable sell through number. But its production shipment number was just under 90m when launch aligned.
PS4 and PS2 have been tracking similarly (when launch aligned) for a while now.

over 150mil without a Pro model & with Xbox & GC actually having a lot of good exclusives to compete with Sony, PS2 numbers were something else.

Is this Insomniac's highest selling game?

Given their long standing relationship, Sony should buy them if possible imo. When I think of playstation brand, I am reminded of Insomniac.

Unless something has changed, then Insomniac has no interest in a buy out. Sony probably would've inked that deal over a decade ago if Insomniac was receptive to it.

So this says over 5.6 million PS4s sold from Nov 19 - Dec 31..........

We already knew that November had about 1.3 million PS4s sold in the US.

What can this tell us about potential December worldwide sales for PS4?

Depends on PS5 i think, if PS5 comes late 2019 with a $399 price tag, it's gonna destroy PS4's momentum, personally im fine with waiting for 2021 for PS5, but i also game on PC so im biased, i think a lot of Console only gamers want better hardware sooner than later, then again with a ton of people just picking up a PS4 Pro in 2018, they might get upset about PS5 being soon also.

I'm still waiting for Insomniac to make the GOTY version of Spider-Man to buy it. 9 million is much more than I thought it'd sell.
The Deluxe edition is pretty much that, has all DLC, so just need to keep a eye on that. You can get the Season Pass for 37% off at the moment (in the EU anyway), so mightn't even have to keep a eye on the Deluxe edition.

Wow. Spider-Man's numbers are something else. Congrats to Sony. PS4 is probably about to hit 100+ million by March. They'll easily go through another 2-4 million monthly from Jan-March due to the amount of games coming between these months.

Third behind PS2 and PSOne. It's already outsold PS3 and will probably pass 1. PS2 is likely out of reach, but PS4 is probably going to wind up being the 2nd most successful home console of all time. If you factor in revenue, it's probably going to bigger for Sony than the PS2 was.

PS4 had its 2nd best year on its 5th full year, including its 6th black friday and 6th christmas. The only official price drop was from 400€ to 300€.
This is hardware from 2013 we're talking about.

Seriously impressive numbers and this never happened before.
Amazing and also hilarious that Sony re-revised their predictions 2 or 3 times and still did better than they were expecting in the end.

Anecdotal- a lot of the console only gamers I know personally don't really care about power or better hardware much, if at all. It's all software, followed by the online community.

Eventually better hardware will become a must as PS4 titles start hitting the limits of what the system can do- but we're not really "there" yet for most people.

That's right. It's not surpassing PS2 but it'll be right under it which is an achievement in itself considering what the PS2 managed to do during its time and era.

Also congrats to SIE, Insomniac, and Marvel Games, Spidey is my favorite game of all time, and the future of comic book video games has never been brighter as well :)

It tells us that the PS4 doesn't rely on 1 market for all it sales and has a worldwide reach.

120-130 lifetime is getting realistic

It also shows that competition has barely affected its momentum past the expected slow down in its 5th year.

If anything, I think PS4 has affected the overall potential of the Switch. I wonder what the Switch could've really sold if the PS4 didnt over shadow it worldwide
