"It wasn't bricking consoles, just sending them into a crash loop", sounds a lot like a bricked piece of hardware to me, no matter how fast they think the issue could be solved.
That whole response felt very unprofessional to me. It was a very serious issue and also not everyone has access to a PS app (or knows how to use safe mode).

If it bricked it, it would be totally dead, not in a crash loop that is easily fixed.
Not really. A bricked device means that it's not able to be recovered to normal state by the user without professional repair.

I disagree. I would describe this case under the "serious misconfiguration, corrupted firmware, or a hardware problem, can no longer function" definition. Which is what this case entailed.

Indeed, the console could no longer function as normal without outside assistance from an separate application.

I swear I just read about PSN name change like last week...
When are they going to release this? I don't want to be known as PinkPikachuu due to the so many "clever" jokes about related places with pink/flesh color.

The common use of Bricked is when something is totally dead. A boot loop or crash loop is something that can be fixed in most cases.

I have physically destabilized my PS4 Pro slightly to offset the spacetime ripple caused by an unnatural amount of internal stability. Sony is toying with the fabric of reality.

A bricked hardware can't be restored, a crash loop can be fixed entering in the safe menĂą and restoring the database, it's a huge difference.

I think it is useful in this case to distinguish between hard bricked and soft bricked. What I am describing is a soft brick which is recoverable unlike a hard brick. Both are nonetheless a bricked piece of hardware.

He seems to have his own definition.
The definitions are quite well known.

It goes on to say "In the common usage of the term, bricking suggests that the damage is so serious as to have rendered the device dead."

Otherwise Microsoft Windows would "brick" your computer each time it froze, summoning Task Manager for help.

Would be nice if Sony publicly said whether this addresses the message issue

So that's why my PS4 kept turning off and on this morning while I was trying to sleep. The fans were going crazy and I had no idea why.

I imagine when they referred to the issue being fixed before the OS update is that the messaging servers were probably set to filter out the specific text that caused the crashing--even on older devices--and the update is a broader fix to the text rendering vulnerability against any future similar attacks.

No one cares about your pointless semantics. It was an issue that could easily be resolved, end of story.

I think this update bricked my external hdd. My ps4 was set to install games to it as default, I did the update bought and installed Celeste. When I tried to boot it up it hung on the splash screen for the game that you can't quit out of. I had to restart the PS4. After restarting my external drive isn't recognised (on ps4 or pc) and Celeste was installed on the internal drive.
