I wouldn't announce anything more about the new systems if I were either company just out of an abundance of caution. I don't think there would be anything wrong with it but honestly it's going to get buried in all of the pandemic news and some may think it is tone deaf.

However, as someone else pointed out earlier in the thread, videogames are a fantastic form of entertainment where you can still be social (playing online) at a time when other options are canceled and there are going to be many with restrictions/quarantines.

Honestly, I think it would be a great idea if Sony/MS offered free online play/Gamepass for those in the hardest hit areas. It would provide a wonderful outlet for entertainment for those locked down and at the same time good PR for the company.

Imo this thread should be closed. Kids here don't respect life they just care about their consoles. Who care about these consoles right now? We need to care about life. Any event about consoles would be a disrespect. It is not the moment and the focus need to be in other things.

Answers like this one deserves immediately ban trying to underestimate a virus there is killing beloved ones around the globe making a lot of countries suffering.

And the kids here want info about next consoles. Give me a break.

No fun allowed. we must sit in our homes and do nothing but listen to the news mentioning the virus 24/7.
lol this post.

Sony was already focusing on the PS4 lineup before all this happened. They'll continue prioritizing what is already available and wait for things with the virus to settle down before getting PS5 news going again.

Production is just one issue at the moment. There is also the whole Corona virus pandemic and the economic impact it will have on global economy, supply chain and a lot of other things. Also I don't think people realize this yet but there will be a second wave of the virus in the fall so you have to consider that as well.
I don't think we will need to even wait for the fall. People are thinking that the weather will get warmer and everything will suddenly be ok — comepletely forgetting that its summer in Brazil & Australia right now and that isn't doing anything to stop the virus spreading.

frankly I'm expecting a resurgence as soon as we wind down from the mass isolation behaviours that are beginning to be implemented. People will take it the wrong way as a "everything is ok now" sign and go back to a bunch of poor habits.

So you're actually saying that if we get 6 more months of silence, you wouldn't start wondering "what's going on with Sony?" The gaming media has already started writing negative articles about this lack of communication. I imagine those are only gonna ramp up the longer this goes on.
I wouldn't start wondering no. Companies always do weird stuff to be in the spotlights, so who knows what they are doing. The US gaming media is always a bit on edge with Sony when there is a new gen onsight (?). Last gen they did the same before the PS4 reveal also Sony hasn't been quiet....

They revealed the "out of wack" logo, released Dreams, talked about dreams coming to PS5 in some form, announced release date for Ghost of Tsushima, announced PC port for Horizon: Zero Dawn and they still are going to release and talk about The Last of Us and Ghost of Tsushima closer to launch.

We are about 8 months before release...... Perhaps go play some games to pass the time? Lots of games still coming out. If you got nothing to play than i suggest Yakuza 1,2,3,4,5,6 and ofcourse 0.
But how do we know that they are doing their own thing?

They went early with ps4. Many insiders were telling they were going to be early again with ps5 and they even started talking early on the Wired articles. And then radio silence...

I'm not saying that they for sure are reacting to Ms info, but they are following a strange marketing schedule.
We don't.... but we also don't know the opposite. So while some choose to go negative, i am going positive. Unless there is some information that i missed.

So what that they went early with PS4 reveal? Sony hasn't been doing things like they did last time. They went a lot earlier with the wired articles..... Skipped conferences and stuff and talked about the next Playstation name like it was something we didn't expect and they showed a logo that looks the same as the PS4 one. So i don't think we should take anything from how Sony previously done things and comparing it to how they are doing it now. And perhaps i have a black hole in my memory but did we have a situation like we have now? People like to skip over certain realities just because they want it to fit a certain narrative. Plans in this kind of situation definitely change and with Sony cancelling things far before other companies, it's not strange that they cancelled their reveal. But all of that doesn't mean that they are just going to release information just because MS said something. What actually happens is that they have a meeting and go with a different marketing plan and perhaps they are going with Pro reveal timeline. Who knows.. But that doesn't mean that they aren't doing their own thing.

Sony has the luxury to wait because of the high profile games they still have to release. People aren't thinking of PS5 at the way some of you do. Is it nice to have some information? Sure, but most people just want to play games and the PS4 still has lots of things to come. Eventually they will talk but they are absolutely not in any haste or necessity to start their PS5 marketing/media blowout. Several ways to Rome and acting just because some, and they previously also did, is the only way is just plain silly.

edit: Why is omelette not a option in the poll?

Yes it is not a severe virus. The problem is the pandemy, not the virus in itself. But that's not the subject of this sub.
I follow Nintendo twitter and they still continue to talk about Animal Crossing normally. Nothing has changed for them.
About your question, I don't know how people are preoccupied with it. I am not, my GF is. Does she still wait AC like me ? Yes.

France. Sports stopped, and any events with more than 100 people. Schools are closed from next Monday.
So having positive news is what I am waiting.
Please, don't give us an even worse image than we already have.

Seattle
and many others have said that this is completely contrary to what is happening in real life. For Apple, Google, MS and many others, the show goes on, just online.

Sure, but not with events scheduled right now. They've been discussing how they'll respond for events that everyone knew were on the calendar. Like GDC and E3. There's no public timeline for Sony's announcements, just a sense of general anticipation. It's not the same thing at all.

There's nothing remotely 'tone deaf' about sharing good, entertaining stuff at a time like this.

Not at all! News about games you can play right now make a ton of sense, just like the video releases you mentioned. It's only a tiny minority of the target market (those of us actively posting here) that find the announcements themselves to provide much entertainment value.

Marketing for TLOU 2 will soon commence. Do you really want to speculate that the game will be delayed further so as not to be 'tone deaf'?

I suspect that Sony is spending a ton of time thinking about that right now. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that they've decided to move some of their marketing effort from planned PS5 events early in the year to rethinking how best to promote TLoU 2. It's certainly topical, but also treads dangerously close to a sensitive subject for those whose livelihood has been destroyed or who have lost loved ones. There's no way they proceed without giving some serious thought to the subject, work up some alternative messaging, and potentially even alter the game surgically (a disclaimer at the start would seem almost inevitable.)

You might need to take a step back because this post is absolutely insane and you sound so tightly wound that you are about to snap.

Nothing major, but they are at least acknowledging the system.

They possibly didn't want to have it on the main site early to avoid people visiting it for non-existent news for too long. A potential hint that new info isn't far off?

I never said or meant it was "the end of the world" or mattered in any way compared to real world problems we are facing. I'm just saying it's bad PR, very bad.
In 2013, Microsoft didn't say anything to respond to Sony's announcement for three months. I've never heard anyone list that as a strike against the Xbox One, not even once.

After the reveal happens, people will only remember and respond to what Sony says, not the timing of when they said it. If they're indeed 9.2TF, that will be bad PR. But I guarantee no one will include "announced later" in a list of reasons why not to buy PS5.

If you respect life, you wouldn't have any console. They are all made by people working in terrible, terrible condition. ...So give me a break with your false morality.
If you're sensitive to the harm of bad working conditions, you need to be sensitive to the fact that COVID-related disruptions are going to be ruinous to the livelihood of many people who live paycheck by paycheck. It's going to affect many, many more workers than console assembly plants.

And that's without taking into account likely tens of thousands of deaths. Just because CFR for COVID is relatively low doesn't reduce the worldwide impact. And it sure as shit doesn't comfort people losing family and friends unexpectedly.

You can urge people not to overreact without perpetuating the lie that the situation isn't serious. People overreacting means unneeded chaos; people underreacting means many more deaths.

Hopefully. With next week's Game Stack Live featuring "Panel: Xbox Series X + Project xCloud = New Chapter in Gaming" on March 18, the pressure on Sony to release some news on PS5 will likely become even greater.

That will have literally no added pressure on Sony.

I think the earliest we get any news is in June, and that's if this current world event is mostly contained by then.

But that wasn't my point. It is not about under or over reacting. It is about reacting only when your people are touched by the problem.
So when people start to argue with me about morality, well, they better have one. Because it is just pure selfishness here.

And the situation is very serious. That doesn't mean we shouldn't talk about fun stuff.
And I can tell with the empty shelves at my local store that chaos is already there. Because of morality ? No, once again, selfishness. You can argue it is understandable, in fact it is. That doesn't change what it is.

Coronavirus : les cas sévères touchent aussi les jeunes

VU DANS LA PRESSE - Les cas sévères de coronavirus toucheraient de plus en plus des populations de 30 ou 40 ans.
Survivor bias at work. Elders are told to be careful so they are. Going down in age, the first age group that was told they didn't risk much didn't stop going out and seeing friends, pumping up their ratio of infected people.

It's fair game for websites to write speculative articles about console launch delays caused by COVID19. Anything is possible at this point , the news cycle in general has been and will be dominated by it and US election news for months to come whatever happens.

Based solely on the fact that life in china seems to slowly be returning to normal and that there are a number of checks now in place there (perhaps intrusive ones due to it being china) to prevent new outbreaks, I don't feel like production on new consoles will actually suffer that much, they wouldn't be entering production until late summer anyway, so it's more a question of how blacklogged they are and how much of that backlogged production has been cancelled to make way for new stuff, so current PS4's/xboxs/switches/phones will be the items suffering from COVID19 related issues moreso than future products. What I'd be more concerned with going forward is the health of potential audience, November is still 8 months away at this point and a LOT can change but the economic impact of this once in a 100 year level outbreak might mean no one has the time or the money to deal with buying a new console... which if combined with a slightly limited supply or even limited launch territories might still work out in the end. Obviously the number one thing is that people begin feeling better and that the worst impacts of this virus , however awful they may be, are passed. If the world is still reeling from what is sure to be a rough spring , it might make sense to delay things more from a social obligation perspective than a supply chain problem one.

Whatever happens , I don't think we'll find out anything either way until summer rolls in. My expectation is that a world wide rollout of new consoles is going to take place over a larger period of time than originally intended. Maybe a week or 2 later in america and a month or 2 later in the rest of the world. A gaming device you can play inside your own home is going to be even more appealing thanks to recent events. Moreso than returning to movie theaters or sporting events anyway.

No one cares about the length of time because what actual cam from MS was way worse. The coy, vague, lack of communication build up set the tone for everything that followed.

People asked about the internet only rumors, MS played coy and delayed information.

People asked about Kinect, MS played coy and delayed information.

Used games
Power
Pricing

All of these were an extension of the vibe MS set with lack of communication. The communication itself in a vacuum isn't the problem. It's that if they do have bad news to drop, it already sets a negative tone and precedent going into the next generation before they even deliver any info. Again people saying it doesn't matter would be correct if the info they deliver is 100% positive.
imagine how the lack of communication and public reaction looks if it's 9Tflops and close in price to XSX like various news outlets are suggesting. Right now consumers have more speculation and rumor articles and communication from third parties than they do from Sony.

I work in retail, fuck this picture

I don't or never have worked in retail, but this photo is misleading. I've been into plenty of 24 hour supermarkets during the night over the past decade and they always resemble something like this when aisles are being restocked.

That aside, I've read this thread everyday for the last few months and it's only in the last few days where I just don't care all that much anymore. It's not exciting anymore when there's so much unknown doom around the corner.

Was it ever confirmed for September release? I always thoughts November/December

Brad Sams said they were possibly aiming for September, but a September release makes sense for a lot of reasons
1. You probably launch a month or two before Sony
2. Halo has traditionally launched in September
3. You get a launch lineup of Halo/Forza/Cyberpunk + more

Same here, this is kinda what my store looks like on deliveries before the store opens, hence the mini PTSD of mine lol.

You know what bad PR is? Releasing a stream of console information in the height of the Corona Virus Scare.

I think people at this point just want some communication from Sony. Like say that Sony will come out with a statement and say that they are going to be having an announcement about PS5 in a few months from now.

Communication is key and it's also makes good business sense too.

Phil Spencer has been more transparent, he announced that they will be having a digital event in a time in the future and would give out details later.
That's all Sony has needed to say and people would be okay with it.

We know Sony's 100 events isn't happening now, so they need to come up with something else.

Yep

The only problem I can see with September is that afaik we should expext a Wave 2 of the covid virus some time in the fall, after a period of seeing the global numbers decline. That may cause another lockdown at airports and border controls but in the worst case they should be able to distribute at least some units out of their own dist centres. I know I got my last two xboxes directly from MS, and of course the games are mostly digital now.

Right now I think any big announcements would be perceived as tone-def by many people around the world.

I would expect 2 months at the very minimum before we hear anything substantial at this point.
Precisely.

I really don't expect Sony to make any moves in the coming weeks/months. It would be bad to do so when so many could be painfully affected by the pandemic. I'd expect our next information dump or reveal event to be post both COVID-19 and Ghost of Tsushima.

If anything the timing may end up working out for Sony. If there is a substantial delay to 2021 caused by the virus there's more time to fill-out from now and first party studio's can still polish launch titles. It could work out but it does mean Sony will miss the holiday season. Either way this will be the same for Microsoft so neither would be giving up market access to the other.

I could be completely wrong though and...surprise!!! That would be nice.

Yes this prerendered. There is a realtime version but less impressive.

With 12 TFLOPS maybe so? I think so.
Pre-rendered, sure. I expect Gran Turismo to show this much class in showrooms and garages...but in-game with other in real-time effects like time and weather? No chance.

Not anywhere near close.

PS5, Xbox Series X or Both May Be Delayed Due to COVID-19, Says DFC

PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X or even both could be delayed due to supply chain issues caused by the coronavirus, according to DFC.

y'know, I've never understood why sometimes I will post a link and it will parse into a rich text format and other times it will just dump as a link... despite me seemingly doing nothing different. Does anyone know why the above happens?
