I've never paid for an online game subscription... and I never will.
I will never pay a month for a game I don't even know how many consecutive days I'll play it... free 30 days my ass... give me 30 actual free logins and I'll consider it.
I can't disagree with your stance, I was certainly partial to that mentality before I got into FF14.
The way I look at it is - yes, a monthly fee is hard to stomach. It adds up across the year, and there is a level of 'I need to play this to get my money's worth'.
However when I look at most AAA games, I'm going to drop a chunk of cash. If I'm lucky, I'll get a month or two out of it and then I'm done. If I really enjoy it, I'll invest more into the season pass and get another few weeks of value later on. Do this across multiple AAA games and you're dropping significant dollars.
Some games are a better value proposition, such as Destiny or better yet, Monster Hunter. However neither have the breadth of content that you can expect from a thriving MMO.
Ultimately I wrapped my head around that, and now I feel like my two subs (wife and I) are good value - regardless of whether I play it once a week, or every day. Important to note that I've also cut back on game purchases since starting FF14 - skipping purchases like Rage 2 and Mario Maker that normally would have been day one buys for me. Instead, I'm far more selective with my games (MH expansion is next) - as I've always got something interesting to do in FF14.
Your experience will no doubt vary from mine, but thought you might be interested in my opinion given I was very much in your stance only a year or two ago.
