I watch some of the biggest YouTubers (Dunkey), and some of the bigger ones (RagnarRox, Super BunnyHop), but recently I'm looking for more focused or up and coming YouTubers. Any recommendations? Just please don't recommend anyone that focuses on Silent Hill retrospectives, that shit's been done. And done.

Cannot Be Tamed

Pam focuses on -vania and FMV games quite a bit, but most genres are covered.
A lot of the FMV games she reviews never came out in Europe so it's always fun to see something new.

Lady Decade

Lots of 90s console retrospectives. If you're old enough some of this might not be new, but I learned some new things.
The origins of FF7 included a detective story? Legit had no idea.

MrMooseBones (3.5k subs) https://youtube.com/user/MrMooseBones

Competitive. Monster. Rancher. 2. Sounds strange, and I'm not sure how the algorithm recommended this one to me, but it's fantastic content. Tournaments, strategy, a Discord, metagame analysis, the whole shebang. Monster Rancher is having a moment right now due to the 1+2 DX re-release and Nash is at the forefront of it.

Stefan Ash FFXIV (8.1k subs) https://www.youtube.com/c/StefanAshFFXIV

Helpful, practical advice for FFXIV. Covers a wide range of topics like uncommonly used UI settings, guides to playing each class/role, and general advice surrounding the game.

Anton Hand (90.5k subs) https://www.youtube.com/c/AntonHand

The guy behind Hot Dogs, Horse Shoes, and Hand Grenades. Mostly dev logs, lots of great insight about real firearms, VR, and gamedev. Before anyone asks re: gun stuff, Anton is on the far left politically.

Jeremy Parish | Video Works (63.2k subs) https://www.youtube.com/c/JeremyParish

Probably not very obscure to people around here, but still under 100k. Jeremy Parish has spent years exhaustively documenting the history and libraries of various game systems in his fantastic Video Works series. Also has some series about topics that interest him personally, like gin and the history of Metroidvanias.

Highlight Reel (43.4k subs) https://www.youtube.com/c/HighlightReel

Standalone continuation of the Kotaku series. A weekly compilation of user submitted videos that are usually funny or impressive.

Classics of Game (16.8k subs, currently inactive) https://www.youtube.com/user/ClassicsOfGame

A YouTube haiku collection. Short game clips that are often funny or absurd, featuring lots of PSX budget releases.

Illusory Wall (93.7k subs) https://www.youtube.com/c/illusorywall

Souls series analysis, secrets, mythbusting, out of bounds exploration, etc.

Honorable mentions over 100k:
Retro Game Corps: One of the "holy trinity" of retro handheld channels.
ThorHighHeels: Documentary style videos mostly about weirder, more obscure Japanese games and the ephemera surrounding them.
Food4Dogs: A very nice older lady who got into JRPGs, particularly the Atelier series.
strafefox/Splash Wave: Deep dive gaming documentaries with a technical emphasis.

I wonder how many people will use this to post their own youtube channels. lol

The only one I'm subscribed to that's under 100k would be Illusory Wall, who makes really good Dark Souls content. They've been in the Souls community from the beginning and played a role in understanding a lot of it's stranger mechanics, has multiple video series breaking down various aspects of all the games. Really deserves to be better known by Souls fans. Kinda shocked to see they're still under 100k tbh.

The last I had checked ThorHighHeels was under 100k, but it looks like they've exceed that now (119k). Still fits the description of an up-and-comer with unique content. Their most recent video looking back at 90's Squaresoft render art was great.

Sub 100k?

Child's play. I'll give you sub 10k!

Spoiler Warning Show is an often thinky and in-depth 3+ person group LP channel, one of the commentators during later years is Chris of Errant Signal fame. One downside of the channel is that they haven't playlisted any of the playthrough videos made in last 3 years, for some fucking reason. The group's been around for 10 years.

Jack Trust makes a lot of long reviews and restrospectives, but despite the effort put in script and editing, hasn't gone beyond 2000 subs, and she seems to have gotten most attention from unintentionally riling up We Happy Few fanatics. Yes, apparently those exist

I don't really watch too many gaming related youtubers but I did recently stumble upon the youtuber 616entertainment they have 88 thousands subs currently and the channel primarily focuses on wrestling games, he has done series like the history of mortal kombat, history of wcw games etc etc as well as retrospectives into wrestling games

Shmup Junkie is far and away the most enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and accessible hyper fan of a single niche I know of. He puts a huge amount of effort into his work and you cannot avoid being as excited about shmups as he is when watching.

ThorHighHeels is also an amazing musician, he did the soundtrack for Umurangi Generation and that one has a lot of real good tunes

Well…

My channel Ugly Sofa Gaming has started picking up a little speed last year and was shortlisted by Media Molecule as favourite video creator at last years Impy Awards.

Primarily a Dreams channel covering dev logs of our own games, news, and the best community content from Dreams.

To my knowledge we were the most viewed Dreams channel this month excluding Elca Gaming who makes videos on their Avatar game.

But we've very recently sent a code request for another upcoming game and if we're successful we might start to branch out a little more.

MinnMax seems pretty cool and is at 30k: https://www.youtube.com/c/minnmax - it's a gaming channel with a podcast crew that feels cool and they do deep dives on games which seem interesting.

Dan Ryckert has also around 30k: https://www.youtube.com/c/DanRyckert - he's an oddball in the gaming space. Love his energy. Recently played seaman on Dreamcast and did a cool Smash Bros Amiibos meets Wrestling storylines where he sets up teams and lets the Amiibo CPUs fight for a title within wrestling storylines. Was really entertaining!

Nextlander is well known here but also at around 30k: https://www.youtube.com/c/Nextlander - Giant Bomb East and Brad formed a new old trio to talk and play videogames. Pretty cool when they check out stuff like FMV games or old 486 titles!

Waypoint is excellent too: https://www.youtube.com/c/WaypointVICE - Love their tactical Tuesdays where they play titles like X-Com or Wildermyth. Austin Walker recently left though and is missed in this crew dynamic.

I have 3 - it's German letsplay channel of Nintendo games atm (will branch out when I'm done with my backlog) and I treat it as a VOD for twitch but maybe someone here might enjoy that kind of content so here goes nothing: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAmXyBey58mn6uhWKfbEyaw

Macho Nacho — focuses a lot on customizing/modding retro consoles. Great production values: https://youtube.com/c/MachoNachoProductions

Action Button — no idea how many subs this channel actually has since the count is hidden but this is Tim Rogers's channel which focuses on long form reviews using his distinctive style of prose: https://youtube.com/c/ActionButton

Delayed Input — for anyone that doesn't know, Kyle Bosman (likeable GT guy, formerly Easy Allies) started doing a Final Bosman-esque show: https://youtube.com/c/KyleBosman

If you go on Social Blade you can see how many subs the channel has, and it's at 100k subs funny enough.

Bonus Points, Stampy (minecraft YouTuber) + his pal play a game each week and add it to a definitive ranking list. Games from any period + any genre. Super chill.

Less than 3k subs. Also smaller vs challenge videos between.

AesirAesthetics is a good one. He does deep analyses that are long but still under an hour, which is a feat given how long some YT videos are. But if you do actually want that ridiculous length commentary over the entirety of a playthrough then he's got that too.

Satchell Drakes is an old but great channel. He doesn't do videos anymore but his Chrono Cross analyses are still some of my favorite game videos ever.

Is there a thread for bigger YouTuber as well? Never heard of RagnarRox and Super BunnyHop. Right now I'm watching a lot of digital foundry but also Game Sack (around 250 k subs.) I like KingK (250 k) and for news I watch Splash wave.

I like Brad Sams (48 k subs) for xbox/Microsoft news.

Edit: RagnarRox seems very interesting. I'm now a subscriber.

BeardGrowingPro has lots of great info on beard growing, and doesn't have a product selling agenda like all the biggest accounts. Some of his videos have only a few hundred watches but there's really no reason to go anywhere else for beard questions. For instance, it's actually kind of hard to kiss with a longer beard. I had a short one for decades, never realized that, and also didn't know what to do once I started growing mine out.

Jazer Lee has a bit over 100k subs, but he has some really great learning classical piano content where he teaches with a great attitude and solid tips for self taught people (and everyone else as well).

Video Game Esoterica - covers unported arcade games, MiSTer and other various retro stuff

Displaced Gamers - breaks down code and it's function in retro games

Jenovi - retro games with a great personality

St1ka - Portuguese retro game channel (in English)

A Critical Hit! - a new channel that covers gaming history with a slant towards women in gaming so far. Her first video on the history of Metroid and the inspirations for Samus is excellent.

I don't want to link to it because I feel weird about advertising myself, but my username is the same. I have an ongoing, somewhat successful series where I've been playing every game in a game series.

Lately, I've been watching https://youtube.com/c/Outgang

Ex(?)-Ubisoft dev who is a very talented character artist and lately has been doing deep-dives into popular characters' models.

GTV

His Mario 3 documentary is arguably better than Gaming Historian's
He also did a 30th anniversary doc for Super Mario World which doubled as a history of the Super Nintendo

He also covers intertesting trivia like the fictional Nan-tendo or if Chris Houlihan was a real person or not.

Gotta follow this thread. GCVazquez looks cool so I gave it a check. I like Super Bunny Hop but the dude is not consistent with posting despite having 445K subs. His stuff is great when he cranks it out though.

Anyway, I like Budget Gamer even though he hasn't done a video in a few months. I know he was going through a rough patch with his day job as a teacher. But his reviews are chill:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmaEMI7FF8MRTVVdlGyFrbw

Yuzo Koshiro (Yes, the legendary game composer) only has 9.98K subs. But he speaks English fluently and posts videos of his process irregularly as his channel description says lol. He even remixes and updates a bunch of his old tracks. The man is a joy to watch.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCe_lUL6kLzZLS49SIdHly5A

Katsuhiro Harada (producer of the Tekken series) has an interview series called Harada's Bar (31.3K subs) where he interviews everyone from Ken Kutaragi and Masahiro Sakurai to professional cosplayers and Japanese influencers. I fell off the pace. Harada cranks out vids weekly. It helps that the English subs are great. It has a late-night show vibe.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXJWC1-8gqQ4gZhgRkRyFXA

The last one I'll plug is J-Music Ensemble (93.7K subs) I stumbled upon them last night while on a jazz VGM rabbit hole. They're a jazz band that does covers of game tracks. But they also do anime track covers too such as TANK! Maximillian Dood gave them his seal of approval.

RetroRGB does a great job covering developments in retro gaming. He covers stuff like SD card mods, HDMI mods, new shells, cables, and the like.

Bob is really great.

Wednesdays = weekly roundup of retro gaming news
Fridays = Q&A videos (gotta be a supporter to ask a question but anyone can watch the videos)
Plus the random video drops for new products and also interviews with people in the retro community who make cool shit. The RetroNAS video released today was good.

There's a pretty cool dude named MrPiscus that's been thinking about dabbling in the YouTube channel game, he definitely has under 100K subs right now
