I've become really interested in 2D gaming, it may be nostalgic, but one of the State of Play videos showed a 2D action game, that got me excited for gaming again. Any great 2D shooters, doesn't have to be side scrolling you guys would recommend?

You want retro or modern?

Retro run n' guns:

Contra Hard Corps is peak Contra. The modern re-release is accessable and features the Japanese version of the game which is significantly easier due to being able to take three hits before losing a life.
Gunstar Heroes is a well known masterpiece and obvious Treasure rep. Less obvious is the Japan and Europe exclusive Alien Soldier.
Metal Slug X and Metal Slug 3 are the high water marks for that series and are playable on almost everything.
Sunset Riders is an excellent Capcom rep but is somewhat less accessible due to it being unavailable outside of software or hardware based emulation. Arcade > SNES >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Genesis

Retro scrolling shmups:

Thunder Force IV / Lighting Force: Quest for the Dark Star is the definitive 16 bit side scrolling shmup. Nothing else comes close in terms of speed, graphics, gameplay. It has an *excellent* M2 port on Switch.
Progear is a steam punk horizontal SHMUP that's never been released outside of the arcade. Fantastic and unique CAVE bullet hell. You'll need to emulate this.
Blazing Star and Last Resort are Neo Geo reps and easily accessible through inexpensive ports on Switch.
