Its not really about how well it sold but its ongoing revenue, and clearly RDR2's ongoing revenue isn't enough for them to continue the support the game in the way they do GTA. GTA Online prints money in a way that RDR doesn't come close to matching.

it sucks, but from a business point of view I get it.

in their minds, why waste time and effort supporting RDR2 when people keep eating up GTAV online and its stupid cards

gamers dug their own grave on this own sadly. stop freaking buying gta V

This is a sign of where the industry is at and where it continues to be heading towards. Fewer games being made while trying to maximize the IP's that make you the most money.

To me it's very bizarre how much money they made and how few projects they seem to be able to work on at the same time.

3.5 years ago it seemed like a guarantee that RDR1 would be built into RDR2 at some point. The landmass of Mexico *was there,* I thought it'd be a slam dunk, and also that Red Dead Online would motivate the move because it'd add a lot more to do in RDO. The only doubt that I had was that after 2 really good DLC add-ons for GTAIV, Rockstar abandoned single player GTAV in favor of shitty cash-ins with GTA Online. But I thought because of the possible Mexico expansion and money making opportunity with RDO, the online might subsidize that aspect of it.

ANd then... rumored for years, nothing, and now it's dead, and it's a shame.

I think RDR2 is the greatest game of the last 10 years, perhaps the greatest game of all time, but goddam if I couldn't have that wishlist of picking up RDR1 shortly after finishing the epilogues...

With the state of GTA & GTA Online, Red Dead 2 might be the last game of its kind from Rockstar.

Agree. Thats why its extremely likely that GTA VI will be based in modern times.

That makes it alot easier for them to do the online part.

After hearing about the changes that have supposedly happened at R*, I think it makes sense. Imagine trying to completely change your company culture, while building a new GTA game, and then on top of that trying to continuously support both GTA5 and RDR2. Somethings gotta give, and the RoI on GTA5 is way higher and less effort, and anecdotally, RDR2 online has never seemed to enjoy a period of notable popularity.

They're the GTA Online dev now. Even GTAVI will exist to serve as a reboot for Online. I wouldn't expect much that doesn't in some way support GTA Online going forward.

Sales are only one metric. From a business perspective T2 seems to have their shit together over the last decade. So why worry how a multibillion dollar company wants to run its business? We cannot change the outcome nor do we have a full picture.

GTAO has forsaken us… yeah it's damn shame. Even bare minimum of 60fps on next gen would be appreciated… maybe they'll let the nostalgia build and sell us a next next gen version.

Despite this I'm choosing to appreciate even more the fact that the game exists in the way that it does and received such wide commercial success, even if R* doesn't see it that way.

Because they delivered a complete package with shit load of unique and extremely well crafted single player content in the first place? What's this obsession with wanting to be nickel and dimed or do some people just parrot internet talking points without thinking about them at all?

I'm not disappointed with the SP part of the game at all. It's great and huge and everything I wanted. But I'm probably the odd one out in this day and age who can simply appreciate a well done one off game with no additional content.

yeah sometimes it is best for something to be one and done and move on.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is already larger than 98% of single-player games + their DLCs.

GTA Online is a popular MMO and it would be difficult for any publisher to support two long-term.

It's no great loss.

It really sucks that we'll probably never get a sizeable Rockstar single player DLC ever again.
Agree with this too.

The things they did with GTA Online...but just left out or did different with GTA V story mode is wild.

How is online gonna have waaay more safe houses, properties and building you can enter than story mode?

More cars in online, the casino is totally different...and you cant enter it in story mode...even the map is different: story mode doesnt show the prison on the map.

Mind boggling. That said....as someone who stopped playing online in 2013, 2014...and jumped back in March of this year....its an amazing experience now vs when it launched.

I think it does make sense that they dropped the online support because of low engagement but I don't get why they don't release a currentgen port.

I get that it's a case of opportunity cost where due to the massive success of GTA, and more specifically GTA Online, Rockstar hasn't been able to reason investing in other than those two products. We've sorta seen it before whenever one of their next big games comes out and they shift resources to it so it can come out faster/better. What I don't get is that they're not willing to hire outsourced teams to handle post-launch support for their titles which still have untapped potential. I guess the debacle of the GTA trilogy 'remake' only drove them further away from that idea unfortunately

rdr2 has more content than most games so its not really that bad. its easily a 200 hr game to 100 percent

The 2 greatest gaming travesties will always be no Undead Nightmare 2 and the cancellation of the RDR remaster/make/whatever

Rockstar just needed some goddamn FAITH

imho it's a complete game... but it would have been nice of them to fix those last few easter eggs that folk have been chasing forever (because they were unfinished).

i.e. 3rd meteorite, princess isabeau and the cut legendary fish.

It's so weird how this game was petered out after release, hardly any support, no DLC, no next-gen upgrade. Especially as it's the best Rockstar game. I guess because cowboys don't have SHARK credit cards, lol.

I know this is a fantasy scenario, but with employee retention being a an issue in the industry, the need for new blood etc and getting them up to speed—I would love if big devs like Rockstar let new hires use the tools available to make smaller things with these engines to get them up to speed. Wether that's bite sized DLC for an RDR2 or…something.

I really don't think current R* cares about Single player support. They probably did the math and surmised that MP support for GTA Online made more financial sense than also supporting RDR 2 Online.

But RDR2 didn't have ongoing revenue because Rockstar barely added anything to the mode. It's a chicken-egg situation. Mode needs to make money to be supported, but the mode needs to be supported to make money.

If R* does not care about SP how can you explain the care, quality and content of RDR2 which is better than pretty much every game out there?

GTA Online was pretty barebones as well. It just attracted people and thats why they kept adding to it. I think the modern nature of GTA and the way they can go crazy with different cars and planes and houses and all sorts of stuff just makes constant fun updates easier.

it is obvious they didn't expect GTA Online to be as popular as it was, so they pivoted to it. It wouldn't surprise me if in a few years we hear about projects they had in the works that got cancelled as a result of GTA Online (like the rumoured Bully sequel).

As others have said, at this point I just want a 60 fps patch for next gen consoles. It's the bare fuckin' minimum.

I just don't understand why they couldn't just farm out a next gen port to another studio if they are too busy with gta.

Any reason for me to revisit on xbox with better performance or better gfx would be amazing. As much as I hated having to pay for a gta 5 next patch, I would have gladly done it for rdr 2
