Republican mega-donor buys "sizeable stake" in Twitter, intends to "push for changes"

The right-winger persecution complex continues to amaze in their hypocrisy and lack of self awareness. Trump was the perfect guy for them.

This is Elliott Management. They do this for greed and not necessarily for an agenda. They’ll by 5-10% of a company and then write some letter/website trashing the existing leadership and demand some changes (including often demanding board seats). It’s referred to as “investment activism”. The goal is to get the company to take a bunch of near-to-mid term steps to pump the stock value up and then they sell all their stock once it’s gone up to make a nice profit. The companies are often not better for the experience long term but Elliott Management will be long gone by then.

Republicans believe the entire platform suppresses their message, probably due to much of their content getting ratioed and the content that doesn't, nobody cared about.

I know when CPAC was happening last year, the ghouls running it thought their event was being censored because it wasn't trending. Turns out an event for boomers doesn't track on a weekend.

Even if this doesn't ruin the already bad website, it would still be fine idea to start migrating to Mastodon.

This guy is trying to make money.

He's not trying to change Twitter's moderation or something

Good luck with that. For all Dorsey's problems regarding both moderation and as an executive he's a big part of why Twitter even still exists. No way the board goes as far as removing him.

They would be nuts to force him out under these circumstances. It would definite spark a mass migration to another platform.

I doubt most Twitter users care about who's CEO. I think if he was pushed out because of this some further left might leave for Mastodon but most would stick around until a change that more directly affects them gets put into place.

But if this mega-donor actually spent enough money on this fixation, it could definitely happen, right? I mean, I can't say I would be sad to see Twitter go the way of MySpace, or ICQ, but it would be hilarious for someone to spend huge amounts of money like that, only to buy into a social media channel that effectively dies and loses the influence it was being bought for in the first place.

I don't participate on Twitter because it's already a cesspool and I don't want no part of that stress, but this solidifies that I'll never be active on that platform.

What does "sizable" in this context mean? He own 5%? He can get fucked over trying to oust Dorsey. 25%? They he's got actual leverage. I'd assume people would start to abandon the platform in droves if right-wing nutjobs took over and tried to censor negative tweets about godking trump.

God...think about twitter becoming the next 4chan.

Incredible that Disney considered buying Twitter once upon a time.

In some ways it’s great for tailoring your timeline somewhat and it’s instant news can be a double edged sword but it’s turned into bot frenzied hellhole.

Just quoting this post for visibility.
Twitter's market cap ~$26B. You'd have to purchase at least 15% to even have a say at the table and even then that's not a guarantee with a board of directors already picked and diversified to support Dorsey. Twitter has turned there financials around, improved daily active users, and been leading on political policy (vs the shit storm of Facebook). This article is garbage.

I didn y'know people hated twitter so much. They're the only tech company I've seen make any realistic effort to fight disinformation the election year.

Considering that the current President used the platform effectively for years to push misinformation, prejudice and arguably treason, I say it sure as hell wasn't enough. People have been calling him to be banned since forever. They are no different from Zuckerberg and his ilk.

He'd have to liquidate most of his company's assets to have enough to buy a controlling percentage. He's just an out of touch old man trying to exert influence in the waning years of his life.

Yeah, like some said here, Twitter’s the best we got since the US decided to do politics online. Yeah it has a big problem with moderation and it sucks when it comes to controlling bots but it’s still good.

If this change by Elliot management was drastic in favor of republicans, then I hope a better alternative comes out.

The right talk shit about it because it's biased against their views and pushes the left.

Normal people don't care and just carry on regardless.

So when this guy takes over Twitter and it becomes a right-wing hellscape those right-wingers who complained about Twitter shutting down right wing accounts and claim free speech is being violated are also going to complain when Twitter shuts down left-wing accounts right?

Right?

What a waste of money. If Twitter becomes Fox-Nazi’d out, an alternative can spring up and replace it practically overnight no matter how long lived and seemingly invincible the original is.

I know this because I’m posting on a site like that right now.

Aside from the article maybe being sensationalized, it's not really about you personally using Twitter but the danger of an important social media company being controlled by Conservatives.
I know. That's why people have been advocating to stop using social media. It's toxic, manipulative, and stupid. The world's in the state it is right now because of social media.

Just when you thought Twitter couldn't possibly be worse.
Yep. People sighing in relief that Twitter is gonna die are jumping the gun. In all likelihood, Twitter ain't going anywhere, and this rich cunt is gonna turn it into an even more effective right-wing propaganda machine. They'll probably start kicking left-wing voices off the platform as much as possible, while inviting all the far-right POS that they've banned back.

TLDR: Get ready for Twitter to become Gab Lite if not full on Gab 2.0 with a much bigger userbase. That is an absolutely terrifying prospect.
