Keranos just looks at Sagishi, stunned that he would still choose to pick a fight smack in the middle of such a critical situation.

He considers firing back, but thinks better of it. Instead he just laughs and shakes his head, then turns to Fhiess.

"If you prefer," he says to the bard, "We can always leave my name out of it. My experience has shown that the masses respond enthusiastically to miracles from on high, but if it offends anyone's delicate sensibilities then feel free to scrap that idea."

He also turns again to Hulna. "So the question of leadership in Stonegate is settled, but what of right now? Are you willing to give up your station for the greater good, Mayor Hulna?"

Fhiess presses upon his past question once more, "But what of possible shortcuts that can be taken? Traders use them all of the time to avoid traffic and to gain a market vantage. Any time we can save is effectively food and energy that is preserved."

When Keranos presents his reasoning for wanting to perform miracles to bolster popularity, Fhiess opens his mouth as if to speak. He isn't sure a message of faith to a god unfamiliar to the Rendormo people are relevant to what he is accomplishing, but the last time he declined Keranos' aid it had caused even more strife among them. So he simply nods vaguely to what he suggests.

"Finding and catching rats should be no problem. I happen to have... some tricks up my sleeve in that regard." He'd almost said experience, though doesn't want to disclose the fact how after running away from the circus rat had been a staple of Myressa's and his diet.

"And I can at least try and see if I can gather some information as to what the local criminals have been up to. Whether it will be useful needs to be seen."

"The other issue," Galen chimes in, "is that we can expect the agents of the dark tower to have some manner of foothold in Westreach, just as they had beyond the Forgerun. If we do this, we will need to remain vigilant; we must not allow ourselves to be caught off guard."

The scholar rankles at Keranos' assumption of authority. "Oh, well if you believe a message from on high will be of use, why not use a more prominent figure? Boccob is known to many. Or would that hurt your delicate sensibilities?" He turns to Sagishi. "I can assist with rat catching if you can herd a number of them into a small space, say 10 feet wide, I can snare them in a web so you can easily collect them."

Galens warning bring only a nod. "Yes, I had been worrying on that myself. We should have forward scouts anyway. I imagine you or Sagishi would be optimal in that endeavor."

Hulna seems dubious to the idea that there might be shortcuts they could take advantage of. "The roads that exist do so because they're generally the fastest way to get where they lead," she says, tapping a piece of chalk against her lips. "If there are any shortcuts, I don't know of them. And I'd be surprised if they'd be any faster to move beasts and carts over than the main road. Couldn't hurt to check along the way, I suppose."

When Galen mentions agents of the dark tower in Westreach, Hulna interjects. "Oh yes, that's right. I nearly forgot." She lifts a scroll up on to the table and rolls it out. It is a map of Telmur, only a significant portion has been shaded over with charcoal, the icon marking the former position of the castle and the current position of Phobetor's tower at the epicenter. "The tower is doing… something. There is some manner of blight spreading through the land from its base, and what remains of the Kingsguard has been experiencing unusual phenomenon near its margin. People experiencing the same nightmares, screaming in terror of things that aren't there, that sort of thing. They keep falling back, but at this rate they'll have the walls of Nodoff to their back before too long."

"This is... unsettling." Galen moves to look over the map before turning to the others. "Do you remember what our friend up north said? It appears our dark lord of the tower feeds upon the fear he brings." He looks back to the map. "This is just what his harvest looks like."

Keranos sighs and rubs his temples.

"ENOUGH!" he screams, his voice supernaturally amplified. A rumble of thunder sounds off from above.

"I get it. You don't like me. None of you do, and that's okay. I don't like most of you. But look around you! We are in the middle of a fucking crisis. People are DEPENDING on us! Spare me your sharp tongues and cutting words and let's focus on the task at hand! We're supposed to be saving the fucking city here. Yell at me all you want when we actually have the down time to act out our spats. Until then, man up and let's get down to fucking business!

"You don't like my ideas? Fine! Come up with something better! Better yet, DO something better! But this constant need that some of you have to undercut me and dredge up our petty resentments is actively hindering us here. LET IT GO!"

Fhiess trembles upon hearing what is happening. It is just like what had happened to the Chieftan; darkness is spreading but on a large scale to the hearts of thousands.

He isn't able to mention this before the sudden outburst. He winces from the pain of the loud thundering in the voice.

"With all due respect," Hulna interrupts, her voice calm and emotionless, "I fear some of us may be missing the forest for the trees here. What is our ultimate goal? To bring as many people as we can safely across the Pillars of the Sky to Stonegate. I think that anything that increases our odds of success in that venture is worth considering, even if the personal politics of it might be distasteful. Keranos has a valid point in acknowledging that people tend to respond positively toward messianic figures and miraculous acts, which of course makes sense if you consider how religions can be the glue that hold entire societies together. I believe we have an actionable plan to try and satisfy the physical needs of such a journey, but as of yet, we have neglected the psychological. Even something ultimately deceitful is unlikely to have the negative outcomes outweigh the benefits if it inspires hope and trust for the duration."

"He's got many valid ideas. Many of which are likely the best we've got for the time we should be giving ourselves." Galen looks up from the map. "The clerics. Would we not be able to compromise and have one cleric of Boccob and one of Keranos? These two forces joining together to aid the people in their salvation? Thosar could even advise the people's hero." His gaze returns to the map.

"If anything, they should desire to put distance between themselves and the tower, and if we can fell any dark stronghold within Westreach, that will likely be the safest place they can realistically be within the bounds of Telmur." Galen points at the shaded area of the map.

"Do we know, has there been any change in this activity as of about a week ago?"

He turns to suggest to the others, "To be honest, I still believe it would be far easier if I conducted my speeches continuing with the focus I had in mind, but I still believe that many will willingly choose to seek Thosar, Keranos, or Ludwig's guidance and aid as we travel."

"Keeping the people high spirited is indeed important, but I don't see why we should do so by forcing some creeds onto them. Whimsely was a lover of entertainment." The thief pulls his juggling balls from his pockets and let's then fly in a wide arc for a few seconds. "There must still be a good number of performers and musicians in town. Together they should be more than enough to keep moral in check. Maybe even better than making people feel at the mercy of some unknown godly power, especially since it is a unknown godly power that has caused all this mess in the first place. People may react badly to what they don't know and understand. But music and laughter is a language spoken by all."

Thosar is unfazed by the Godling's outburst, he's more or less used to them by now. "Advertising the miracles of our respective gods is all well and good, I just refuse to use Boccob's power in the name of some other figure. I expect the three of us shall represent our faiths dutifully and provide any needed treatment of food or water. As I said before, I can help with rat catching and I can also divine for food to help speed up the search for specific items such as cured meats or the like." He takes a moment to think.
"Once we're on the road, I can support our scouting contingent with flight or invisibility. If it comes down to a battle... I can eliminate packed groups of enemies, but the spell I would use is dangerous to any in the area."

Skill Test: A Long Hard Road--Escort and ensure the survival of the remaining population westward to the safety of Stonegate. The reward is sure to be commensurate with success!

((Alright, here's how this will work: There are three stats to keep track of, that being Supplies, Morale, and Population. There will be ten rounds representing the ten days it will take to make the journey. Each round, the Supplies and Morale will deplete at a fixed rate, but I'll also be rolling in the background against a table of random events that may exacerbate the situation and cause greater than expected loss. Also on each round, each of the players can take one action to affect either Supplies or Morale (and no trying to get clever with "I'm going to find enough food to bolster morale.") with a DC that ratchets up at periodic intervals. Population will be affected in accordance with Supplies or Morale rates, but isn't directly affected by player actions.

For the sake of expediency, we can assume that the plan to catch a supply of rats was successful, if unpleasant. Starting out, it is estimated that there is enough food and water for everyone to make the journey on ~800 calories a day. That's enough to stay alive for 10 days (and then some, but it's obviously not healthy long-term) absent all other considerations, but these men are going to be marching for a week and a half and the terrain will get difficult within the first couple days as you get into the foothills and then the mountains themselves.

There are bound to be questions and blind spots that I haven't considered, so let's ask them so I can hammer out the rules before getting too deep into this!))

((Thosar will definitely be best suited to helping with supplies. That can take the form of the purification ritual, using mending cantrips for broken items, or the guidance cantrip for skill checks. Enlarge/reduce and grease could be used to remove any barriers that get in the way. Skills wise, his knowledge is going to be of most use by recalling natural or historical lore to help find water sources, useful geographic features, or ambush sites.))

((Just to check, how quickly is the Wagon Train West heading out? Given the rat collection, is there time for any other preparations?

Since Galen is likely trying to collect food each day, how does that interact with scouting? Is anyone out and about able to keep an eye out for issues like certain death?

And, to finish this current short barrage of questions, "Do we know, has there been any change in [the spread of terror and all that from the tower] as of about a week ago?"))

((Wagon train is heading out ASAP. All necessary prep can be assumed to be done beforehand, including coming up with enough rats/food for 10 days. Whether there was time to do any other preparation depends on what you do.

For the purpose of Galen hunting and how scouting might work, we can just say that success/failure on rolls reflects the outcome of the whole contingent of men Galen is leading in stuff.

There's been no change in the spread of the blight from the tower, it's been a steady rate.))

In quiet privacy, Fhiess is distrought. He had hoped to prove himself that he can be exceptional, but now he has to face the populace looking up to him having become a mere pawn to the tyrant they loathe. His initial mistake nearly getting hundreds killed because he failed to check the crystal properly still aches at his heart.

It takes tremendous strength not to immediately break down in front of the crowds once he arrives. It is only through the power of Thosar's guidance that he is able to have any strength to begin speaking and face those that would listen.
Skullcrusher stands as firmly as he can. He begins, continuing the narrative against the mayor knowing that it is what Ludwig and the people would want, "The Mayor.. has abandoned everyone in this city. She had allowed the supply of food to be cut off. In just mere days everyone will starve.

He takes a deep breath, "But a city isn't the walls; it isn't the leader or the name. It is you! The people that know each other, have families, form communities and have a life among yourselves no other can have. As long as each and every one of you move, no matter how far beyond, Rendormo moves with you."

The speaker looks to the direction of Stonegate, "We have to leave the city and make a trek to Stonegate. It is there that there's a chance for survival and a chance for everyone to see their wives and children in their lives once more. There will be hardship, you will live off of rats, and there may even be attacks from hobgoblins. But to see the smiles of loved ones, to hug them again.. wouldn't the risk be worth it?"

Before anyone can say no to him he announces, "You aren't without aid. With me are a band of clerics and a paladin of vastly different gods that have united under me." He makes sure to stress as rigidly as he can, "They are as equals acting with unity, and will work to ensure the food and water you have is pure and safe to consume." Finally, he points out, "There will be entertainment and domesticated foxes helping to scout for food."

"We leave as soon as we have our supplies."

After the meeting, Thosar is focused on the task at hand, wanting to ensure that as many people can be saved as possible. For the most part, he stays near the caravan trying to keep an eye out for important details like wheels starting to break under overburdened carts or the usual injuries that occur in a caravan. deliveries of food that need to be purified. Stuck wagons get a grease under them to ease their movement, felled trees Reduced, wooden boards to cover rough terrain or potholes Enlarged. For his part, Thosar does little in the way of prosthelytizing but he shares knowledge with any who seek it. In particular, he points out useful features in the geography as the caravan rolls on where wildlife gathers, natural springs can be found, and hobgoblins might lurk for an ambush.

Whenever Fheiss needs to make another speech, Thosar is always ready speak his guidance to the young half-elf. Mostly with words boring enough to lull him in to something of an almost unflappable torpor.

Ludwig is elated. Not only has Hulna been forced out of power, but based on what he's been told, no one's jumping into the power vacuum that she will leave. With the path clear for capitalism to prevail, Ludwig happily sets out building wooden transports for the food that will be needed.

In need of wood to do so, Ludwig wanders about the town, approaching people who are packing their things by wooden buildings. He then approaches them and gives a spiel about needing the wood to build transports, a typical request looking along the lines of "Hello, free people! I am building mobile containers for the food that will be taken with us, and since you're leaving this house, I am hoping to repurpose the wood in it to get that going! Naturally, this is a commodity, and I will pass along who contributed when it's time to decide who's at the front of the food line. Just taking it would be evil! That's eminent domain, one of the worst things the state can do to someone! And that's the kind of thing this uprising was there to put a stop to! So, uh, wood, please?"

Once he has enough, Ludwig will get to building.

Keranos leaves the summit excited and with a clear plan in mind, especially with Thosar volunteering to handle the initial push for food purification.

Step one is to commandeer the largest wagon available. He does this by leveraging his new working relationship with Hulna and by emphasizing the clear need for a mobile triage center.

Once the wagon is secured and adequately supplied with medical implements and a reasonable complement of beds, he does a combination of asking around and proselytizing in the middle of the street, looking for helpers. Experience with treating the sick and injured is a plus, but any kind of dedicated assistance will be accepted.

His final task prior to the journey - a brief one, but to him, important - is to spruce up the wagon, both on the inside and the outside, with iconography to glorify the true God of Storms.

Once his mobile temple/triage wagon is set up, he awaits the signal to move out.

Galen doesn't have anything overly specific to work on in preparing to depart, so he helps out where he can. He does, however, have a brilliant idea he shares with Ludwig; hopefully it goes well.

At the time of departure, Galen meets the group having switched out his brown and grey clothing with blue and, well, grey.

((If anyone needs Galen for any of the preparations, he should be available. Beyond that, this is essentially some manner of filler before this mass exodus. Oh, and an outfit change.))

Once the meeting with Hulna is over and he helped Thosar in chasing down as much of Remdoromo's rat population as possible, Sagishi hits the streets again in search for musicians to help him and the others in keeping the people's spirits up during their journey.

The task turns out to be a lot more difficult than he has imagined. During his prior stay in the town there had been musicians on almost every corner, with songs and melodies sounding from every tavern. But now the streets where almost empty and many of the taverns have already closed and even after asking around for hours he has a lot less success than he would have liked.

The first day of travels proceeds... Optimally. Fhiess's leadership inspires the men to match for his on end while most of the others grapple with how to maintain supplies for so many men for so long. Sagishi's plan to enlist the local color in providing entertainment for the men has less success; turns out they're just as dispirited as everyone else.

Thosar continue to consels Fheiss as best he can, but mostly he tries to point out natural sources of food and water for the caravan to scrounge. About miday, he points to some scraggly plants jutting out from the soil alongside the road.

"See that Liphylus Seli? The bushes with the green berries. Their roots are nutritious and starchy like a potato but typically carry a virulent strain of parasite that can be quite emetic if it infects you. They are quite fulfilling if purified, though."

Keranos starts the second day of travel in good spirits. No calamities have yet struck the caravan, which means he has a reasonable amount of free time.

He spends that free time educating the despondent and the lost about the hope of salvation and the promise of a better life through devotion to the True God of Storms. He regales anyone who would listen with tales of Keranos's long-past exploits, including his initial rise to prominence, as well as amusing or insightful anecdotes, such as the Tale of the Obstinate Goat Herder, the Downfall of Tyrant King Wendel, the Hundred Year Hurricane, and of course the Natures' Majesty Summit, a classic tale of misunderstanding that occurred when the Goddess of the Hunt mistook an innocent gift of friendship from the God of the Moon as a romantic overture, causing a rather turbulent kerfuffle with the God of Harvest (who was the Goddess of the Hunt's husband) that Keranos ended up having to mediate.

As Skullcrusher leads, he plays a tune on his whistle. The sounds are paused by stories he can conjure to inspire greatness in any life one can think of. Some come from his own journey, some are Hogan's tales passed down to him, some from the stories he read as a child.

"A trader that set forth with just grain and seeds; for each commodity exchanged is a gift just slightly richer. With each bargain the trader became from a mere farmer's aide to a lord of riches and rubies.

"An explorer seeking treasure; every soil felt, every inch of air breathed, every culture seen. Though little riches were found, much of the world's wonders forgotten were remembered through the explorer.

"A soldier called to battle from a rank and file; a nobody until the blade cleaved a vile devil. A legend was forged from evil's wounds, for the soldier became a hero felling even demons that could challenge gods.

"The chef, known only for simple stews and roasts, sought to find new tastes. Through trials and trials of spices, doughs, and broths, eventually brought alluring perfection of taste, smell, and texture for those that thought not possible."

With not much happening this day, Ludwig is left to his own devices. He'll help purify any food still in need of cleansing, and preach about the joys of the free market to those unfortunate enough to be stuck listening.

Given the ample down time, he decides this is a good opportunity to work on Galen's proposal. Using his carpentry skills, he begins making masks designed to look like a fox's face. With the goal of making one for each member of the party, himself included, he gets as far as he can while things are uneventful.

Since he isn't needed for hunting or much else really Sagishi decides to gather up the children traveling with them. Leaving their home like this must be scary and he hopes that he can maybe take away some of their fears.
When he looks into the expecting eyes of the kids however he fumbles for a moment, nearly dropping his juggling balls. Kids were always the harshest critics and these look even more expectant than the ones back during his circus days.
He manages to shake it off however and quickly slips into his usual routine. He juggles, makes jokes and even fires up a few from his fire crackers, though he is aware that his reserves are dwindling.

The second day on the trail is not quite as successful as the first. Galen's best efforts to make hunters of the bowmen has met with mixed results at best, but is somewhat ameliorated by Thosar's continuing education on what is and is not fit for consumption. The rest of the party spends their time trying to lift the spirits of the men, with Ludwig unexpectedly proving to be the most successful in crafting wooden masks in the image of a fox for the others to wear, the sheer absurdity of it all being enough to make the men forget their trouble.

The third day dawns in the foothills. This promises to be the last day of easy-going before they hit the harsh realities of the pass, and it begins with an ill omen. An axle breaks on one of the wagons carrying barrels of rainwater, causing its payload to fall to the stony earth and break apart. Hulna is extremely concerned, but at the moment it doesn't seem to have affected the morale level of the men.

((Broken barrels sounds like a job for Ludwig!)) After Mending the cart's axel, the scholar consider the problem. Before Sagishi leaves to find more water sources, Thosar gives him some ideas on where to start his search. "If you start to smell wet rock or soil, there a good chance of a spring or underground stream nearby. Look for patches of greeng among the drier grasses. Marking those spots will help the others quickly find the water sources we need."

He offers some chalk to Sagishi in case he requires something to mark off promising spots with. Otherwise he spends time trying to make sure Fheiss is guided through his morale boosting and noting valuable food sources along the road.

Before the end of the day, Thosar unloads any remaining spells he has to create fresh water in any available barrels.

Keranos sees Thosar conjuring water from thin air, and his eyes widen, as though a switch has been flipped inside his head that he never knew was there.

He opens his mouth to speak, then changes his mind and wrinkles his nose. He is positive he can replicate that feat himself, and on his first attempt he succeeds, filling a spare rain barrel (one that wasn't lost in the accident) with fresh water.

He cheers audibly in excitement, and does it again.

And again.

And again.

He spends approximately one hour resting, and then replicates the feat all over again.

Excitedly, he approaches the rest of the Endowed (separately, if necessary) and says: "Don't worry about finding water anymore. I believe I have that covered."

((I have five level 1 spell slots and two Level 2 spell slots. If I use them all to Create Water, that adds up to 90 gallons. Since Warlocks regain all their spell slots from a short rest, I can create 90 gallons of water every hour.

Since humans only need half a gallon per day to stay healthily hydrated, if I use all my spells for creating water ten times per day, that should be enough to cover the entire caravan. And I can do it 6 more times and still get a full night's rest.

This also only takes up about a minute every hour, so I still have most of the day to do other things.

But, for Day 3, my action is creating 1440 gallons of water))

((The casting only takes a minute or so, but the rest of the time you'll be resting which means means pretty much sitting on a wagon doing nothing more strenuous than calmly talking. That does make things simpler, though. Keranos acting as a one man water spout would mean only having to worry about food for the most part.))

The sage gives a smile. "That's a good idea, Keranos, I hadn't considered how rapidly you regain your spell reserves. If you devote yourself to ensuring our water supply, then that frees our efforts to focus on finding food and purifying anything needed."
With what is left of the day, he focuses on looking for alternative sources of food. Bush stems, mushrooms, nuts, berries, and weeds are all subject to harvest thanks to the purifying magic brought to bear on them. With the panopoly of water produced by Keranos, the results of the day are even edible by making them into soups.

((Nature roll of 25 is set for the day, just kind of altering the focus.))

Ludwig is just trotting along, doing his thing when it is relayed to him that several of the barrels have broken. With food purification taken care of, no bandits or creatures attacking, and Ludwig not being a good hunter, he doesn't have much else to do but fix the barrels and potentially make some more.

Wanting to make a free market lesson out of it, he gathers as many people as he can and teaches them what he can about basic woodworking while putting the barrels back together. With any extra time, he'll see to the axle and touch up anything that was outside of the scope of the mend spell. "Just remember: give a man a barrel, and he can store his fish for a while. Teach a man to build barrels, and he can sell them for a huge markup in an environment suffering a container shortage."

For this day, Fhiess is starting to notice a problem. Morale is at high, but even the most talented speaker can't repel doubt if the writing is on the wall and it begins to be apparent that he can't do anything to actually help solve the food shortage problem. While watching Fawks chew on a dried rat he thinks of how he wishes he could train the fox to hunt.

"I would like all men that had been hunters or planning on becoming hunters as well as any archers and spear-men among the guards to step forward!" Skull crusher announces. "Our goal is survival, but that does not mean we cannot have a nice roasted boar to help us last once in awhile. I will need the armed men to share their bow and arrows with those that know how to find animals and hunt them, same for anyone that knows how to hunt with spears."

Persuasion (Enhance Ability roll): rolled 21. (12, 9) + 2 guidance = 23

(( MoonlitBow , is it possible for Galen to get one of those magical "be better" things, or does he need to take up woodworking to succeed in life?

And I'm really enjoying Ludwig's stunning success on those masks. It was the perfect use of that roll.))

((Last day of hunting before the pass? With the aid of Skullcrusher's mighty magicks, here we go.

[5]+6=11
Enchanting Enhancement Advantage
[15]+6=21

I like how it's a difference of exactly 10. No idea why; I just do.))

While under other circumstances the loss of so much water for so many people on such a long trek might be disastrous, the combined efforts of Ludwig and Keranos are able to replace what was lost with nothing more than a day's work. Meanwhile Sagishi and Galen team up to bring in some fresh venison to supplement the rations ((Yuk yuk yuk)) while Fhiess musters the troops to attempt to flush out a boar. All in all, given how the day started, things have gone about as well as can be expected.

The fourth day dawns at the mouth of the mountain pass. The grade has increased sharply, and game trails veered aside some miles back. The ground is craggy and the vegetation is tough and fibrous. Things will be harder going from here on in.

((Day 4
Nothing happens as far as random events go
Supplies: 8
Morale: 9
Population: 1750))
