Introduction

Welcome to ResetEra's first annual video game soundtracks of the year thread! This thread will serve to create a common point of reference for ResetEra's favorite game soundtracks in 2017, place a spotlight on the industry's musical talent and expose people to great video game music that they haven't heard before. It will also host a (hopefully) comprehensive archive of the year's game music and other related information.

Also, many thanks to EarthPainting, Nocturnowl, Schala, and many others who have handled these threads in the past.

Voting Rules

For your vote, select up to 10 of your favorite game soundtracks of the year and rank them in the order of your preference. Your first pick will receive 10 points, your second pick will receive 9 points, your third pick will receive 8 points, and so on down the list. Feel free to post more than 10, but anything past 10 will be considered an honorable mention and will not count for any points or tiebreakers. They will, however, help us in building the archive.

No special formatting rules apply, since all tallying will be done by hand. Just be sure to clearly identify the ranking of your picks.

Please list at least 1-2 tracks you feel are your favorites from each soundtrack you vote for, as it will make the process of building the Archive much easier. It is also highly suggested that you give a quick write-up for at least one of your votes, but this is not explicitly required.

The LTTP Soundtrack Vote returns because it is always fun to look back at the past. These LTTP votes will not count for points, but if there is a soundtrack that gets a considerable number of votes, I will make mention of it/them in the results. The LTTP vote is purely for fun so it is optional, but please bear in mind that you may only mention one soundtrack for this option.

Sample Ballot

1. Game A (will receive 10 points)
2. Game B (will receive 9 points)
3. Game C (will receive 8 points)
4. Game D (will receive 7 points)
5. Game E (will receive 6 points)
6. Game F (will receive 5 points)
7. Game G (will receive 4 points)
8. Game H (will receive 3 points)
9. Game I (will receive 2 points)
10. Game J (will receive 1 point)

Honourable Mentions (if any)

LTTP vote (if any)

If you wish to do any sort of write-ups for your vote, you may do so in any way you wish. And absolutely feel free to make your vote as pretty as you want to make it.

You're highly encouraged to do more than simply list your selections; please provide links to standout tracks if you can and take the time to describe what makes the soundtracks special to you. We're hoping that everyone will want to join the conversation and take the opportunity to discover new soundtracks and composers. The most important thing about this thread is to have fun with voting and discovering new things.

Voting will end on January 31st at 11:59 PM (PST). The votes will not be counted until after the voting period closes, so you may edit your post and change your vote as many times as you would like before then.

-----------------------------------

Ineligible Soundtracks: 2017 has seen many games which have been either re-releases, ports, remasters, or games that have seen staggered releases in different regions. Because of this, some soundtracks are ineligible for voting for various reasons. Generally, if a game is remastered or ported and there is not a substantial change to the game's soundtrack, it is not eligible. If there is a substantial change to the game's soundtrack, such as through DLC or expansion, it is eligible.
  • Regional: If a game was released for the first time in your region this year, it is eligible even if it was previously eligible in a previous year or will be released in other regions in 2018.
  • Late Ports: No non-2017 ports are eligible. They are only eligible for LTTP votes.
  • Virtual Console / PSOne/PS2 Classics / XBLA Classics: These are only eligible for LTTP votes. No exceptions.
  • HD Remasters with minimal changes: Remasters with minimal soundtrack changes are not eligible for point allocation this year. If you would like to vote for these Remasters, please do so in an honourable mention or LTTP vote.
  • HD Remasters with major changes: Remasters with major soundtrack changes are eligible for point allocation. Please vote for these soundtracks normally.
  • Major expansions with new tracks: Expansions of some games are eligible for voting. Additionally, patch content for some games, such as Final Fantasy XIV, are eligible. If you are voting for these soundtracks, please specify that you are voting for their expansions.
Long story short: if you would like to mention a soundtrack or two that comes from a late port or re-release, you may add it onto your ballot as an honourable mention or an LTTP vote. If other soundtracks come up in conversation or via PMs, I will add them to the categories in this OP. If you have any substantial reasoning as to why an HD Remaster soundtrack should be eligible for point allocation, please send me a PM.

Aside from those exceptions, all soundtracks for games released in 2016 will be eligible, including licensed and partially-licensed soundtracks. To the extent that we're hoping to celebrate new music from this year and bring some attention to composers' new works, there's a bit of an implied "honour system" here; if you decide vote for a licensed soundtrack, an explanation as to why you think it was especially fitting for the game or thoughtfully compiled would be greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions about, or wish to discuss, a soundtrack's eligibility, please feel free to send a PM to me and I'll try to get back to you as soon as possible. Nine times out of ten, my answer will probably be "yes", but if you're unsure please message me.

1. Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Most of December I've been listening to this game's OST, or at least.. what we have of it in youtube(Mitsuda pls), Game's OST is grand, area music are all lovely, battle themes are hype, cutscene music are emotional and beautiful.

Battle Theme #4
Awakening - Unique boss theme #2
Counterattack - Cutscene Music
Indoline Praetorium - Town music (Night)

2. NieR: Automata

I had a hard time to choose for 1st, between this and Xenoblade 2. but then when I wanted to list samples I found out that most of what I like are music from the first game or re-arranged tracks. though still the new tracks are hauntingly beautiful and tear-inducing.

A Beautiful Song
Weight of the World (Emi Evans)
Amusement Park

3. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

This is a distant last, but I still loved what we got from this. My favorite track for this is only in a trailer =)

Story Trailer
Rito Village
Hateno Village

edited: fixed my list, added more titles and added samples.

That's awesome!
I was a regular in those threads before, but couldn't find Schala and others here. Also sent a PM to SweetNicole about it but never got any reply.
Glad to see that someone is continuing the tradition, and it really needs to be pinned to the top as well.

edit: and please people, write something about your choices, that's the whole point...

1. NieR: Automata

Music Box. I could pick the whole OST though. It's sublime.

2. Persona 5

Beneath the mask. So many good tunes albeit not as many good ones as Persona 4.

3. Tekken 7

Solitude Track

4. Prey

Everything is going to be ok.

1- NieR: Automata
Keiichi Okabe

Voice of No Return
Peaceful Sleep (Vocals)
Breathtaking, epic and very well utilized. Music greatly helped cement it as my game of the year.

2- Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood
Masayoshi Soken

Yanxia Theme
The game that keeps on giving with a soundtrack that can naturally only thrive to do the same. Soken is a genius and after so many tracks since the start of 2.0, doesn't look like running out of steam.

3- Final Fantasy XV DLC 1
Keiichi Okabe (Episode Gladiolus)
Naoshi Mizuta (Episode Prompto)
Yasunori Mitsuda (Episode Ignis)
Nobuo Uematsu (Comrades)

Home Sweet Home
Ravus Theme
As if having Shimomura work on the main game wasn't enough, this DLC added all these legends to an already majestic soundtrack. I don't think there ever was so many high profile composers work on a single game like that before.

4- Persona 5
Shoji Meguro
Last Surprise (Battle Theme)
Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There
Barely finished the first arc but heard enough of the soundtrack for it to earn a place in my list.

5- Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth By Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage
Yoko Shimomura
The Secret Whispers
Final Fight Part 2
Very few tracks but all of them are exquisite. Last on my list but not to worry. KH3 will more than make up for it next year when it places first. Yes, next year. Did I stutter?

Honorable mention:
Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 +2.5 Remix

Yoko Shimomura
Hikari Kingdom Orchestra
Dearly Beloved (Birth By Sleep)
Shimomura music. Magically fits both Final Fantasy and Disney. Enough said.

LTTP:
Undertale

Toby Fox
Snowdin Town Theme
Magical. The tracks fit every map so well and the snow theme is hauntingly beautiful.

  1. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - Xenoblade 2 have plenty of problems but music isn't one, not only the soundtrack is full of great songs but each song fits its theme. If I were to pick my favourite one it would be:

  2. Persona 5 - Persona 5 is a game with style, and it presents that style very well with its soundtrack. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaIo82uT0qs
  3. Super Mario Odyssey - Mario always had good music, but jump up super star might be my favourite game song ever

  4. Sonic Mania -As someone that grew up playing sonic, Mania soundtrack managed to fill me up with nostalgia and joy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIWyZmFSep0
  5. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Nothing much to say but the main theme helped Switch sell a lot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdGJBRxuIlc

2017 was actually a year where I might really get to a top 10 for OSts, if this was for 2016 I would have had a very hard time ^^

Honorable mention:
Persona 5

Shoji Meguro
Battle Theme
Barely finished the first arc but heard enough of the soundtrack for it to earn an honorable mention.
You can list up to 10 Soundtracks, so why are you making a honorable mention after only listing 3? If it's good enough for you to mention it, then it deserves a point imo.

Nier's Soundtrack is good, but P5's is godlike. Just the pure amount of amazing tracks is astounding, even stuff like shopping or just walking around has those awesome songs that make the whole experience so much better. Life Will Change is also the most hype song in gaming, when that comes on you cant help but get pumped up about going into a palace. There is no other game that deserves best soundtrack like Persona 5 does, its nothing but hits

Ah too bad. Just thought that I could since I played its first release on PS4 and it was eligible for the Goty list. I'll just replace it with Persona 5 then.

You can list up to 10 Soundtracks, so why are you making a honorable mention after only listing 3? If it's good enough for you to mention it, then it deserves a point imo.
It didn't seem fair, like I said, I didn't play much of the game. But you're right, it does deserve points, I'll edit my list.

I was probably more excited for this than GOTY tbh
Anyway, here we go:

1. NieR Automata

In a year of strong soundtracks and even stronger games, Nier Automata represents the some of the best (if not the best) the medium of video games has to offer. Each track manages to fit the mood of the scenes impeccably.
(Here's a few more tracks I haven't seen being mentioned yet)
Bipolar Nightmare
Alien Manifestation
End of the Unknown

2. Persona 5

Persona 5's soundtrack manages to be effortlessly cool and stylish, matching the tone and style of the game perfectly. Persona consistently has some of the best music in games, and Persona 5 is no different. This game took me 86 hours to complete and I never once grew tired of hearing many of these songs.

Keeper of Lust
Price (Since when are bagpipes this dope?)
Will Power

3. Tekken 7
This game has lots of dubstep music. I don't really like dubstep music. I really like the music in this game, though. Why?
Heat Haze Shadow 2nd
Duomo Di Sirio
Metallic Experience 2nd
Arctic Snowfall

HM. Street Fighter V (Season 2)
SFV had a bunch of new characters and stages added this year so I technically can count them, right? Whatever, I will anyway. This stuff is way better than people give it credit for.
Metro City Bay Area (Round 1)
Ed's theme
Ring of Pride
Zeku's theme

1. Ruiner
- There's a track called Memory by Sidewalks and Skelletons which is great. And also the track for the overworld, but I've forgotten what that's called. The soundtrack overall is awesome though.

2. Nier: Automata
- Unfortunately I don't know what any of the tracks are called (and I'm not in a position to check right now) but many have been mentioned in posts above.

Literally me

And I'm sad I can't vote for Undertale. Only just played it last year when it came out on Vita and the soundtrack is phenomenal :///
Well, we don't want soundtracks dominating for multiple years, and Undertale already won 2015 SOTY in the old lands.

There's always the LTTP vote, of course.

Lightning for Smash
Work in progress.

1. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
IIB68AZ.png

I was 100% sure the OST was going to be great in the first 2 hours of the game but I never expected it to be my favorite soundtrack of 2017. This game delivers so many great songs, epic songs, heartbreaking songs, you name it. There are 3 that I consider are the best:
2. NieR: Automata

The OST of this game simple screams sadness, desolation and injustice to me. This was my #1 pick until Xenoblade was released but I could easily swap places between these two games.
This is a very powerful OST and I'll admit that I cried a lot of times hearing some songs while I was playing the game. I guess what I love the most about it is how it manages to deliver beautiful and powerful vocals in a non existant language.
Here are some of my favorite tracks:

3. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd

4o4b4FR.png

There's a reason why Falcom is known for their soundtracks and I think the 3rd sums it up pretty well. Of all the Kiseki games I've played the 3rd probably has my favorite songs from this fantastic series, some of the best music in gaming for sure. Here's for more Falcom goodness in 2018!

4. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia

9By0vP3.png

Perhaps my favorite 3DS Fire emblem game. And I think my favorite soundtrack from the entire series.

5. Sonic Mania

UxhtZOd.png

The true Sonic game of 2017. Most of the tracks are remixes but man, these are some of the best remixes I've ever heard in a video game. Tee Lopes, you are a genius.

6. Super Mario Odyssey
0nAoRVJ.png

I'm just going to define this soundtrack and game as pure happiness and joy. If you ever feel down, a little sad or had a bad day please just listen to this soundtrack and I'm sure it will make your day a little better.

7. Tales of Berseria
aQZe6hb.png

So anime. So metal. So good.

8. Cosmic Star Heroine
BN1rdum.png

Perhaps the best indie rpg I've played. I wasn't so hot about it the first hours but it got better. The music in this game is fenomenal. The soundtrack reminds me of the Falcom games for some reason and that's some high praise in my book.

Well, we don't want soundtracks dominating for multiple years, and Undertale already won 2015 SOTY in the old lands.

There's always the LTTP vote, of course.

That's fair but I don't think Undertale would've dominated the list since it's a port and it's way past its heyday at this point. But rules are rules so it's not a big deal.

I'll repost this list I wrote up last week for another thread:

1. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - After the disappointing X (field themes notwithstanding) Chronicles 2 sees a return to the brilliance of the original's soundtrack, my personal favourite collection of music from anything, anywhere. The sequel doesn't quite match the original's brilliance but that's not to say it doesn't have some incredible highs. Once again, the field music stands out the most for me with Gormott, Mor Ardain and Tantal being the pick of the bunch. Add to that a more consistent collection of battle themes and some wonderful town themes and Xenoblade 2 stands above the rest of this years stellar selection.

2. Sonic Mania - Sonic games always have good music - this is a fact of life. Some Sonic games however just have better music and the classics were always the benchmark when it came to the catchy, fast paced soundtracks the series has been associated with for over 20 years now. And then along comes Tee Lopes, a long time Sonic fan and composer with a selection of tracks I remember jamming it to back in 2012. The fact that he not only managed to match the brilliance of the classics with his original stage music but downright improve the music for many of the returning zones is a testament to how fantastic this soundtrack manages to be. Standouts are Mirage Saloon for original music and Metallic Madness for remixes.

3. Gravity Rush 2 - What an amazing soundtrack Gravity Rush 2 has. Every aspect of this game is backed up by a suitably fantastic piece of music. Whether it is the numerous locales Kat flies through, any one of the grand boss battles or one of the high stakes challenges, you can be assured the accompanying music will be high on energy and extremely memorable. Much like the game itself, the soundtrack of Gravity Rush 2 is far larger in scale than that of the original and while you could argue the larger scale holds the gameplay back, no such complaint can be made for this phenomenal soundtrack. Shout out to Raven's Theme, my personal favourite track in the game.

4. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia - The Fire Emblem series has always had a stellar selection of music but it was only really with the 3DS era did they start getting the attention they deserved. Being a remake, you could be forgiven for thinking SoV plays it mostly safe, remastering the original tracks and calling it a day. What we got however were some of the highest quality official remixes I can think of. March to Deliverance and With Mila's Divine Protection only begin to showcase the beautiful music that can be found in this game. Original tracks The Saint and the Sacrifice and What Lies at the End back end the game which ends with the glorious final boss theme, Twilight of the Gods. This is without even beginning to mention some of the lovely vocal themes such as Lord of a Dead Empire and Praise This Despair! Overall, the soundtrack is one of the many aspects which contribute to the amazing presentation of SoV and probably the strongest aspect of the game overall.

5. Nier Automata - Nier Automata has a very distinct style of fusing melodic orchestra with beautiful vocals which contributes to the majority of the soundtrack. What makes Nier stand out is the way the in game music evolves over time to match the state of the characters and narrative. Take City Ruins for example which starts off silent with only traces of a distinct melody which matches the formidable atmosphere of the destroyed city. Over time however, the City Ruins become more familiar, acts as the central hub and overall feels less intimidating. All through this transition, the music gradually builds up until it becomes the dynamic theme you can listen to here. Overall though, the music is just a joy to listen to with tracks such as War & War and Song of the Ancients perfectly encapsulating what makes the game so great.

6. Fire Emblem Warriors - As I previously mentioned, Fire Emblem has some stellar soundtracks. So naturally, a game devoted to rock remixes of the some of the best the series has to offer is obviously going to be great. While the remixes are limited to Awakening, Fates and Shadow Dragon, it doesn't stop the music from being a high octane celebration of some already incredible tracks. Alight and A Dark Fall (both of Fates fame) are two of my favourites, just as they were in their original game. Apart from straight remixes, Warriors also includes a few medleys as well as a selection of stellar original tracks, much like Hyrule Warriors before it did. While it does lose points for being mostly a collection of remixes, Warriors nonetheless ends up having a soundtrack worthy of the hundreds of hours of gameplay it needs to support.

7. Sonic Forces - I've seen a lot of dissatisfaction for Sonic Forces soundtrack with murmurs of it being one of, if not the weakest soundtrack in a 3D Sonic game and I honestly can't blame people for coming to this conclusion. Standing up next to the likes of Unleashes, Colours and Generations, Forces just isn't quite there in terms of consistent quality. Yet I can't help but love a large portion of the soundtrack, namely the modern Sonic tracks. While the lyrical nonsense of the Avatar themes and the catchy yet grating Classic Sonic certainly aren't going to stand up to this years best, the modern Sonic music manages to find itself a techno heavy niche and hold on to it for all it's worth. This means a series of somewhat repetitive but nonetheless fiery tracks that I found better the more I listened to them. The pick of the bunch are Arsenal Pyramid, Infinite 2 and Red Gate Bridge. While Forces doesn't hold a candle to the other Sonic soundtrack released this year, it's by no means the unmemorable mediocrity the game itself ended up being.

8. Super Mario Odyssey - I'd be lying if I said Mario Odyssey's soundtrack wasn't a disappointment after the marvellous Galaxy games and 3D World. There is a lot to love about Odyssey's music with the obvious Steam Gardens and Cascade Kingdom being standouts. Yet too often is long stretches of gameplay accompanied by ambience that also plagued Breath of the Wild his year. Nintendo are known for many things and phenomenal, memorable soundtracks are one of the greatest of these. So when half of the Desert, Wooded and Lake Kingdom as well as the entirety of a certain post game world is backed by absolutely nothing, I feel as though the OST could have been better. I also don't at all care for Jump Up, Superstar but that's on me...

9. Miitopia - Definitely one of the more obscure games I could have chosen but Miitopia actually has a low key amazing soundtrack. The only reason it isn't higher is that by far and away, the battle themes outclass anything else the OST has to offer. Some of the standouts are the Rare Encounter Battle, Starting Area Battle, Ice Area Battle and the Cloud Area Battle themes. There's not much more to say about Miitopia's OST other than it will unfortunately fade to obscurity much like the game itself.

10. ARMS - How many games have a soundtrack almost exclusively dedicated to a singular melody interpreted in different styles? ARMS manages to do just that with it's admittedly great main theme remixed over and over for the different character themes of the playable cast. It actually works wonderfully with Spring Man, Helix and most recently Dr. Coyle showing the effort gone into ensuring variety over the course of the soundtrack. Of course it would be a lie to say that the entirety of ARM's OST consists of a series of remixes with Master Mummy, Byte & Barq and Min Min showing the composers did a wonderful job of making each of the characters have a distinct theme to go along with their stages. I hope we see a lot of these show up in the next Smash.

Honourable mentions to Undertale which didn't technically release this year but I played it when it launched for PS4 earlier this year and holy shit, I would be hard pressed to not call it one of gamings all time great soundtracks. Just perfection in every department. Also Pokémon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon which has some nice remixes courtesy of Rainbow Rocket and a pure fire Champion theme, as always.

I was wondering if this would happen.
Soundtracks of 2017, this is going to be really difficult...
Thankfully we have until February. I need that time to sort through everything and hopefully play through a few games.

1. Night in the Woods - It's no Undertale, but these tunes really set the theme of a great game. While my other two votes have great music, it's only supplementary to the overall experience. Night in the Woods' music makes the experience what it is. That's why it's placed where it is.

Die Anywhere Else
Durkillesburg
Gregg
Mallard's Tomb
Rainy Day
Robot Builder
Trailer II

2. Super Mario Odyssey - Not quite Galaxy-tier, but lots of memorable tracks that help set the stage to its lively worlds.

Fossil Falls
Steam Gardens

3. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - It's Zelda. It's going to have good music.

Maze Forest
Purified Dragon

  1. Nier: Automata. This might be my favorite OST ever. Everything has been said about it already, but god there are so many beautiful tracks in this game. It's etheral, moving and it fits the game perfectly.
    Weight of the World (Japanese)
    Memories of Dust
    A Beautiful Song
    Alien Manifestation
    Wretched Weaponry
    Voice of no Return

  2. Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment. Complete remix of the original soundtrack (and a few original tracks), with some amazing tracks. Jake Kaufman keeps on giving :D
    The Price of Doing Business
    Hidden by Night
    The Lonely Parapet

  3. Cuphead. Cool jazzy tunes, with several standout tracks
    Die House
    Inkwell Isle One
    Honeycomb Herald

  4. The End is Nigh. As a huge Super Meat Boy fan, I expected a lot from this game... It wasn't as good as I wished it had been, but I still had a lot of fun with it, and the soundtrack is really cool
    Wall of Sorrow
    Golgotha
    The Future

  5. Super Mario Odyssey. I'm not really into Mario soundtracks, but man, Jump Up Superstar is just too good. And there's a few other great tracks in the mix
    Jump Up, Super Star!
    Steam Gardens
    Honeylune Ridge: Escape

  6. Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I still haven't played it much, and the music isn't the biggest strength of the game, but a few tracks stood out to me
    Main Theme
    Prince Sidon

LTTP : Cave Story. It's unfortunate it suffers from bad audio quality, but damn there are some fine tracks in there: Last Battle, Title Screen, Moonsong

1. NieR: Automata
Keiichi Okabe

Possessed by a Disease
Wretched Weaponry
A Beautiful Song
Voice of No Return

I could damn well just post the whole soundtrack, but here are my favorites on this particular day.

2. Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood
Masayoshi Soken

Shinryu's theme
Kugane Day
A Sad Eastern Tale
Beauty's Wicked Wiles
Revolutions

This game has the best soundtrack in the series, to the point where it's almost unfair. It is just unmatched when it comes to both quantity and quality. This expansion was no different.

3. Gravity Rush 2
Kohei Tanaka

Night Gale
Angel
Elektricitie
A Red Apple Fell From The Sky

Even better than the first game's OST. Not only are there some great new tracks, but all of my favorites from the first game got new renditions that are even better.

4. Persona 5

Shoji Meguro

Beneath the Mask (Instrumental Version)
Life Goes On
The Days When My Mother Was There

Turns out my least favorite modern Persona soundtrack is still pretty great.
