Welcome to the inaugural Essential Platformers thread on Era! Following in the footsteps of kswiston's 101 Essential RPGs thread and Gradon's 51 Essential Horror Games thread, this thread attempts to highlight all of the greatest jump 'n' runners in the industry, as chosen collectively by you.

We are currently in Phase 2 of this project, and are revealing results! All results will be posted here in the first several posts of the OP as they get showcased.

Koopaling_-_Bowser_Jr.png
The Purpose of this Thread:
This is meant to rank and honor what our forum recognizes as the most essential platformers of all-time. Ideally, it will be used as a guide for present and future users alike to use for suggestions highlighting everything from the obvious classics to the unheralded gems of the genre. This genre has no shortage of variety or legacy, and has had noteworthy releases on virtually every gaming-capable platform (pun intended) imaginable. While platforming games are no longer the dominant force and most popular genre they once were, critically acclaimed releases continue to come out each year. Characters such as Mario and Sonic are household names and pop culture icons. Licensed stars such as Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny have successfully got in on the action as well. Series such as Crash Bandicoot and Spyro recently succeeded on the great nostalgia for this genre with updated collections. Even new titles such as Celeste continue to add new life to the genre thanks to indie releases. As long as gaming still exists, so too will platformers.

Koopaling_-_Larry.png
What games qualify as a "Platformer?":

Genre classification can get blurry. If you, in good faith, believe it's a platformer, vote for it! From your 16-bit side-scrollers to your 3D mascot-driven collectathons, it's valid here. Single-screen arcade platformer like Donkey Kong? Indie puzzle-platformer? Metroidvania adventure-platformer? Endless runner? If you consider it one of the top 10 most essential "platformers," it's a valid vote. Furthermore, platformers touch on every theme imaginable, ranging from cartoony to horror to sci-fi to war.

Koopaling_-_Morton.png
Collections, Ports, Remasters, & Remakes:

Ports and remasters will always be ranked together as one game. Players can decide which version is the definitive one for themselves later. When it comes to remakes, things can get a bit hazy, but if you genuinely believe a REMAKE (again, not a port or a "definitive edition") should count as a separate title, it's valid to vote for it, but you must specify. Collections of previously released full games do not count as their own title. If you wish to vote for something that happens to be in a collection, specify which individual game you are voting for. Debate over certain titles is probably inevitable here, but things will work out in the end to represent the collective's opinion.

Koopaling_-_Wendy.png
Presentation:

Every game will have a banner that displays information for each individual game. Banners are primarily designed by McScroggz. Example:
Super_Mario_Galaxy.png

As you can see, a lot of self-explanatory information about the game will be included in each of these banners - developer, published, estimated completion time (using howlongtobeat.com), subgenre, and estimated number of levels. Also included are the release year of the original release, and an icon list of all platforms that game and its ports or remasters have officially been released on.

Here is the guide to platform icons:

Voting Rules/Format:

Vote for 10 games, number-ranked in order. We are utilizing a tiered point system. Ballots that are not clearly ranked cannot be counted.
-Your #1 gets 5 points. This is what you consider the #1 most essential platformer of all-time.
-Your #2 gets 4 points.
-Your #3 gets 3 points.
-Your #4 and #5 get 2 points each.
-Your #6 - #10 get 1 point each.

Present your games however you like at the top of your post, however a minimum of three write-ups explaining why you chose those 3 games are required. You are welcome and encouraged to write more, but any ballot with explanations for at least 3 games is valid. These can be as small as a sentence, or as long as several paragraphs.

Koopaling_-_Roy.png
Bonus Categories / Badges:

You may list one game in each of the following, optional, bonus categories. "Badges" will be added to the banners of games that get the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd most votes in any of these categories. You are encouraged, but not required, to add write-ups for your vote in these categories. For your vote to be counted, please specify a game. Franchise-wide votes will not be counted, as badges are awarded to specific games.

Badge_Icons_final.png

Koopaling_-_Lemmy.png
Voting Period:

Voting begins immediately with the posting of this thread starting on Monday, June 1st and will end on Monday, June 22nd.

To get results out faster, most ballots will be counted before voting closes. Your ballot will be added to the spreadsheet and considered final 24 hours after you post it. If you decide to edit it after 24 hours has passed, you must edit the post and then PM me (PK_Wonder), otherwise it's your original post that will have been counted.

Special Thanks:

WestEgg , FiveSide , and McScroggz for working hard to develop and promote this thread. Large-scale threads like this wouldn't be possible without a dedicated team working both publicly and behind-the-scenes to ensure it's the best it can be.

And to Kswiston and Gradon for OPing this thread's spiritual predecessor threads, Essential RPGs and Essential Horror Games, respectively.

Artists used in McScroggz' banner include Retromissile, Konjak, Deimos-Remos, Ewa Spaik, Abysswolf, Level2Sele, Mecha Cat B, Krampus Party, MrInkDemon, and MarkProductions

Sonic_Adventure.png

#101 Sonic Adventure

What Terraforce has to say:

"This game to me is what Mario 64 is to a lot of people. Even beyond the nostalgia, I think SA1 is truly a great game. I like the level design and the multiple playable characters adds variety to mix up gameplay in unique ways. People call out the physics and glitches as some of the many issues with the game, but I think that adds to the game. Intentional or not, the controls and "jankiness" change how you can get through a level and what areas you have access to. But at the same time you can have a complete experience without touching those aspects. And of course this is without mentioning the glory that is the chao garden. This will forever be one of my favorite games."

Mega_Man_3.png

#100 Mega Man 3

What Redcrayon has to say:

"Mega Man 3 is the best in the series to me. It's a more rounded game than MM2, with a far more balanced weapon set and difficulty (MM2 always feels incredibly easy compared to the others, and the Metal Blade is far too strong)."

#99 The Revenge of Shinobi

What andymcc has to say:

"The movement options and overall mechanics of this title's immediate sequel are better, but the tightly focused level design and Yuzo Koshiro soundtrack put this ahead for me. I got this game upon release and still play it with regularity."

#98 Rayman

What Eridani has to say:

"The level design is outstanding, constantly coming up with new ways to challenge you. The controls are precise and make the gameplay feel fun despite how slow the movement can often be. There's a lot of diversity in the levels, with things like autoscrollers, boss fights and unique challenges constantly making an appearance. It also has my favorite sprite-based art of any game."

What Descendant has to say:

"The ultimate 3D platformer that has it all for anyone. Fun gameplay and mechanics that build on the first two great games, plus a really fun story, with an entertaining and comedic characters that actually makes you feel you are going on an adventure. The light RPG elements for your weaponry is just the amount of depth this game needed to propel this game to greatness."

Puppeteer.png

#94 Puppeteer

What Wozman23 has to say:

"Everything about the game is utterly fantastic. The art style is bold, taking on a puppet show theme with wooden characters, revolving sets, and a lot of great finer details like props being held up by sticks from out of sight offstage. Mechanically, the scissor-like sword Calibrus serves as an important multipurpose tool, aiding in both traversal and combat. Unbridled creativity is present in every second, whether it be the vast array of level themes, the design of the wide cast of character, or the many swappable heads that Kutaro can use."

#93 Fez

What UnapologeticallyBLK has to say:

"I went into this game without knowing what secrets it held for me, and my surprise and joy upon finding that there were secrets buried deep beneath its seemingly simple gameplay kept me glued to the game. Each time I'd figure out something new about the world, it would bring the same shock of delight as I felt the first time that I realized that something that seemed mundane or mysterious had a deeper purpose. This is a brilliant, brilliant game in that regard, and the platforming is pretty solid, too!"

Jet_Set_Radio.png

#92 Jet Set Radio

What Lant_War has to say:

"Jet Set Radio's arcade nature is what makes it so good. You will do poorly until you understand the flow of the game, how to gain momentum, where you have to aim to get that grind, what routes are quicker for you to tag all the spots in a level, where you can lose any enemies following you, etc. It's a very deliberately designed game, one you have to put effort into it to understand, but once it all clicks, it's amazing."

What RingoGaSuki has to say:

What Wozman23 has to say:

What ShironRedshift has to say:

"When 3D Land came out, I was absolutely addicted to the thing in a way I really haven't been to any other Mario game either 2D or 3D before or since. I just had an absolute blast playing it. It just scratches that 3D platforming itch for me in a wonderful way, in nice bite-sized levels, which itself is all I could really ever ask for, I suppose. Plus, it has one of the absolute best final bosses in any platformer..."

What MushroomSamba has to say:

"This wasn't just a hasty nostalgia cash-grab...it was clearly a labor of love with careful thought to Mega Man games of old, everything about it just felt right. It was like the best of what the franchise had to offer distilled down into this one perfect package."

LittleBigPlanet.png

#84 LittleBigPlanet

What Kresnik has to say:

"An absolute revelation at the time that gave me many late nights playing. The platforming is a little floaty but the amount of heart and character throughout the campaign, fully created in the level editor, is astonishing - and then you can go and do it all yourself! Which works surprisingly well, plus the community levels were just something else."

Ratchet__Clank_-_Going_Commando.png

#83 Ratchet & Clank 2: Going Commando

What Old_King_Coal has to say:

"Platforming with weapons! And oooooooh boy, if you like upgrades, there is nothing more satisfying out there than levelling your guns to their mastered forms. A little bit rpg-lite, the improve-em-as-you-use-em system that also applies to Ratchet's health is very very cathartic. You'll find nothing better, at least within this genre."

Donkey_Kong_Jungle_Beat.png

#82 Donkey Kong Jungle Beat

What Pyrrhic Victory has to say:

"The complexity of this platformer is without parallel. You beat the levels? Fine. You got the Gold Crests? Nice. But do you have any idea how to Platinum? I wanna know. I'm getting 13x MULITPLIER before I get my first banana most levels. The route planning and execution in this game is beautiful and seamlessly adds complexity to the game without disrupting the normal flow. The fact that it's done with the immersive Bongo controller is a marvel."

Super_Monkey_Ball_2.png

#80 Super Monkey Ball 2

What Castform has to say:

"This is the pinnacle of arcade style platformers. The controls are unique in that you manipulate stages rather than the characters themselves, which takes some getting used to, but allows for deep mastery of the controls to finish courses in ways that are not immediately apparent. The challenge mode's stages are phenomenal, and a number of the party games work really well ("Monkey Target"). If you haven't touched this game, you are missing out, and hopefully Sega will rerelease it in the future."

What Kresnik has to say:

#77 Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time

What Napalm_Frank has to say:

"Crack in Time to me is the pinnacle of 3D action platforming if you like a ton of guns to go with your jumping and gliding. What brambles13 has to say:

"Maybe the all-time best level design, everything feels perfectly arranged here. I love all the Wario Land games but what propels this one above the rest is the different difficulty levels (which change MANY things about the game), the scoring system, and the fact that you can actually die. #73 Rocket Knight Adventures

What sir_crocodile has to say:

"This Mega Drive classic has absolutely beautiful sprite art, fun boss encounters and great music, but what puts this in my top ten is the key mechanic to the game - the rocket charge dash. After holding a button down for a few seconds, Sparkster will dash forward in an incredibly satisfying manoeuvre, which is as useful for traversing the levels as it is for attacking foes. I cannot do justice to this in text, and even videos wouldn't, so I implore you to try this game yourself - there is a reason I also give this game 'Best Mechanics.'"

What Castform has to say:

"This takes the successful formula of Super Mario 64, tightens the controls, and features a cohesive theme for it's worlds. F.L.U.D.D. makes many of the levels of this game easier than they necessarily should be, but thankfully the levels in the void are there to add variety into the formula."

"I still remember finding out about Ico in a magazine - Game Informer? EGM? - and being stunned by how it looked. Not so much the technical aspects - which were incredible - but more the fact that someone had such a specific and entirely unique vision for a game world. But out of that, he built a game about a relationship, communicated to you by the subtle vibration in the controller and in doing so, transcended the medium of games."

What I have to say:

#68 Sonic Adventure 2

What Old_King_Coal has to say:

"A linear stage-based 3D platformer like the post-Galaxy Marios, with a little slice of open collecting with the treasure hunting stages. The game naturally lends itself to being more focused on aerial control than predecessors and its peers. It also features those classic Sonic branching paths, many of which you would think couldn't possibly be intentional, until you find a ring capsule or some other secret stashed away there."

What Gradon has to say:

"Ape Escape took the platforming genre and threw it on its head. It's completely unique and I can't compare any other series to it - the act of capturing cheeky monkeys itself is a serotonin boost. What futurememory has to say:

"The amount of charm and love on display in this late NES classes is intoxicating. Kirby is animated beautifully, and the various powers he can acquire throughout the game (make sure to try out some of the boss' offerings!) are creative and game breaking in various ways. While the game overall is fairly easy, this breezy adventure never overstays its welcome, and continues to throw new delights at the player all the way to the end."

What StoveOven has to say:

"I do think Shadow of the Colossus does great things with platforming. It's mechanically unique in a way that I don't think most games could get away with, and it has a sense of scale that because of the analog nature of the mechanics I think is much more impressive than something like Uncharted (and I like Uncharted). When I jump from Agro's back onto Phalanx, I'm still in shock that this is a thing that I can do in a videogame."

#60 Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped

What Lant_War has to say:

"Crash Bandicoot 3 is an excellent platformer that nails everything I look for in this genre. It might not be groundbreaking mechanic-wise, sure, but all your different abilities and how you can tie them together to just flow through the stages is very, very satisfying; coupled together with a great amount of level variety, collectibles, gameplay styles, it's impossible for me not to love this game."

What RKasa has to say:

"Though this is arguably more of a puzzle game, there's also a ton of platforming, including some rather tricky bits. Portal also pulls off the rare feat of being a good first-person platformer, back in an era where jumping mechanics in such games were still hit or miss. The single best first-person platformer ever made."

What lord_of_flood has to say:
"I'm a huge fan of Iga's Castlevania games, and this one is his best work. It's basically how you do Simon's Quest the right way; it has great levels that provide just the right amount of challenge, and the glyph system is a stellar approach to combat in an action platformer. The bosses are also all really engaging to fight with clearly great design overall. The overall visual design of the game is fantastic too. Last thing that I want to mention is that Shanoa is a great protagonist."

#45 Braid

What DLH has to say:

"The brilliance of Braid was the way it built on an existing gameplay "language," established largely by the Super Mario series, and wove a narrative into the very mechanics of the game. The storytelling wasn't flashy, and it involved perhaps too much (optional) text content before each level. However, each level's mechanics and design were thematically built around the text in a way I've never seen before or since, and the big reveal at the end is driven by player interaction in a way that brings you into the twist. Where some games feel like playing a movie, Braid feels like playing a poem."

#44 Castlevania: Rondo of Blood

What Zen Hero has to say:
"Pure platforming perfection. The challenges are so well tuned to be difficult but not frustrating, it's just fun. You will die many times progressing through the stages, but each time you'll progress a little further and be able to get through it faster, you'll be able to feel your skill improving. Like the other classic Castlevania games, Rondo of Blood has a look-before-you-leap design philosophy in the sense that you don't have much air control and your primary weapon is pretty narrow. This forces you to think carefully about each of the moves you make, making it a less twitchy but more thoughtful game, and I really like that."

What Opa-Pa has to say:

"It has a very unique style to it, with a fairly welcoming approach to exploration within a still fairly linear structure. The infamous escape sequences provide a nail-biting exam of your skills learned in progressing through the overworld and the preceding dungeons. #32 Donkey Kong Country

What futurememory has to say:

"One of my favorite games to play co-op, DKC has a ton of fun and silliness packed into its SNES package. The graphics still look amazing in 2020, and the mine cart levels will make you howl and laugh in disbelief and frustration. By no means a hidden gem, but if you haven't experienced this one yet, give it a look."

#31 Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

What CJCW? has to say:

"An iconic game in the Metroidvania subgenre, and with good reason. It added a crucial element to this type of game that, in hindsight, should have been there all along, that being an emphasis on RPG stats and leveling. More than that, SOTN excels in level design, with an intricate map that is a joy to explore and slowly memorize over the course of your playthrough. The music is some of the best in any game regardless of genre, and the sprite work is still gorgeous to this day."

What Necrokey has to say:

"This game rocked me to my core, it had an amazing story but better yet it had some really fun gameplay. It is a side scrolling puzzle platformer that is 2.5d that is very dark in its presentation and themes. I could gush over this game and its puzzles but i feel that discussing much of anything regarding this game is spoiling it for everyone, if possible please try this game out folks!"

BADGES:

3rd Place Best Art Design

What Xtortion has to say:

"Ori's controls are very unique among platforming characters, trading trade a high jump arc for one that's very long, which lends itself to effortless horizontal bounding. There's a 3D Mario-like execution of the controls, where countless mechanics and interactive level gimmicks all feel incredible to interact with, and some of the movement tools like Bash remain downright genius. Frenetic chase sequences return from Blind Forest and are arguably better than ever. Combine all that with heartbreakingly beautiful visuals and music, and Metroidvania structure or not, this is one of the best platforming-focused games out there."

What ghibli99 has to say:

"The game that really got me into the Mega Man series, I credit its more accessible difficulty for that. It also has memorable stages, bosses, and especially music, which along with Mega Man 3, stand as my favorites. Again, like Namco above, Capcom during the 8-bit and 16-bit eras was just banging on all cylinders."

What SofNascimento has to say:

"Fast, precise, challenging and bloody (fun). That's Super Meat Boy for you. Like many platformers, this game is all about getting to the end of the level while jumping around and not dying, SMB stands out because how well it execute this. It offers a multitude of different obstacles and sometimes you might just stand back and wonder how the hell does the creators of this game expect me to beat this level? But you can always do it. A must play platformer without any doubt."

#24 Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back

What Napalm_Frank has to say:

"there is no question Crash 2 is a huge jump in quality in many ways, arguably the best platformer on the PS1, tightest linear style 3D platformer in general and my favourite platformer of all time. The action is almost non-stop, there is no struggling with camera, good variety in levels and gimmicks without going overboard. Crash feels extra snappy to control thanks to the new slide mechanic along with slide jump that make the game more fun to come back to multiple times thanks to the optional speed bump for the character."

[...] There's a real feeling of scope in the levels and then a variety of mechanics that allows players to be incredibly creative in how they complete them. It's really a bonus that the game was aesthetically gorgeous. Faith deserves better than she got, and I hope the tremendous potential of this franchise gets realized eventually."

What Wozman23 has to say:

"Rayman Origins represents just how wild and creative a platformer can strive to be. Every part of it comes together to form something magical. The hand drawn art brings a really wacky world to life. The soundtrack adds even more quirk. [...] The characters are equally as charming, whether they be the main cast like the limbless Rayman or rotund Globox, or the supporting cast like a shoot em up inspired mosquito or the electric guitar playing Grannies. The sights and sounds you witness in the Rayman franchise are unlike any other, and that whimsical approach elicits joy unlike any other franchise."

#19 Sonic Mania

What Rotobit has to say:

"The best Sonic game hands down didn't come from Sega or Sonic Team but instead a team of dedicated fans who rose up the ranks to become official developers. That alone makes Sonic Mania special, but its sheer variety of content, gorgeous pixel-art, and fantastic soundtrack make it great in its own right. Then you have the Plus expansion, which only fleshes it out further, and you have a pitch-perfect platformer."

What @NovelMike has to say:

"The original Shovel Knight was a great and enjoyable experience but the additional campaigns that have been added just add so much more to an already fun game, and you'd think that going through many of the same levels with new characters would get old but the different characters have enough unique things going on and the levels have many tweaks that constantly keep them interesting and fun to play."

#17 Super Mario Bros.

What Slime Stack has to say:

"I think it's fair to say that SMB might be the most essential video game of all time, let alone platformer. Those crazy wizards of Nintendo somehow managed to write the book on good platform game design with basically no reference. Everything about SMB is iconic: the music, the graphic design, the weird mushrooms you jump on in level 1-3. Even the finer details have aged really well for a game that's literally 35 years old. It's extremely well-paced, rewards skillful play, has memorable set pieces, and fantastic sound design: tenets that would later become synonymous with what constitutes a good platformer."

#16 Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (& Knuckles)

What Old_King_Coal has to say:

"This game exemplifies a lot of the things that make classic Sonic different from Mario, with enormous level maps that contain multiple branching paths and routes and routinely provide opportunities to explore the space beyond simple 'hidden bonus room' secrets, as well as replaying to find the most optimal ways to speed through. Sonic's controls are well refined by this point, with the insta-shield ability rounding out his classic moveset nicely. [With] 3 playable characters with unique abilities, an actual level select, beautiful art and fantastic music, this really is the 'essential' Sonic experience."

What Christo750 has to say:

"My favorite game of all time. At the time it was one of the grandest senses of adventure I had encountered in a video game. The movement tools at your disposal both had context and were outlandish, in a way that made this unlikely Bear and Bird duo unforgettable. I loved learning things like the Talon Trot in Mumbo's Mountain, the Wonderwing in Clanker's Cavern, and of course, the ability to fly in Treasure Trove Cove. Each world had an amazing cast of characters, a wide array of collectables without ever being or feeling unmanageable, and most importantly, an UNINTERRUPTED sense of exploration."

"DKC2 was one of the first instances of a collectathon platformer, and is still the one of the most balanced ones. This is a game that really compels you to go for 100% (102%, actually) because it rewards you with fun new levels, and looking for the bonuses and DK coins is so much fun and never feels like a chore, all of the secrets are well hidden but still very much intuitive and fair. On top of all that, the game is widely recognized by it's legendary soundtrack, that brought the world and its beautiful scenics to full realization with music that isn't what anyone would expect from a mascot videogame in 95. DKC2 is a masterpiece and every gamer should experience it."

What toilet_sandpaper has to say:

"I still have to see a platformer with so much charisma, polished visuals that blend so well with the mechanics and enemies. Transforming Yoshi in vehicles was so cool. Driving a train on the wall paintings? Getting stoned with forest plants? Fighting a giant crow on the moon? Man, the developers were SO CREATIVE with this game. As a child, the game fascinated me. I played it this year in Switch and it still is the best made platformer of all time for me. No flaws on this one (except the Mario cry that makes me never want to have a baby!)."

What Thuddert has to say:

"It's an incredible charming game with a gorgeous artstyle and an excellent move set. The level and world design is hard to top even to this day. Yoshi's Island is a game I keep discovering new things in every time I play through it again and it just such a lovely and wholesome experience every time. It's also one of the few games where I would encourage people to go for the full completion, as it really becomes a very different beast altogether. What UnapologeticallyBLK has to say:

"This is basically the culmination of all of 3D platforming; free movement, awesome camera, and a variety of platforming challenges that allow the most novice player to advance in the game while fulfilling the more experienced players' desires for goals based on both exploration and precision platforming. The story and visuals are fantastic, and New Donk City itself is a perfect storm of great set-pieces, fun high/low exploration, and enjoyable platforming segments. It's essentially a perfect game."

What salamedratos has to say:

"I think this one is as close to being perfect as a Mario game can get. The levels are inventive and full of depth in the exploration and in the platforming itself, the mechanics are rich and complex, the art design is varied and close to perfect and its full of emotional and surprising moments, which is something platformers usually lack as those moments are usually tied to more narrative experiences. BADGES:
1st Place Best Soundtrack
1st Place Best Level Design

What Xtortion has to say:

"Level construction is wonderfully intricate, often weaving together multiple escalating gimmicks per level in a style of design that evolves the Yoshi's Island approach by using those gimmicks to support an overarching level theme. Stage backdrops are painstakingly detailed to tell environmental stories with very few stages looking alike, and composer David Wise arguably one-ups himself from DKC2 to create a damn near bottomless well of incredible music. For platformers that emphasize challenging gauntlets to hop and bop through, you can't get much better than this."

What Nocturnowl has to say:

"Tropical Freeze is packing my favourite overall selection of stages in any game on this list, every outing is meticulously detailed with distinct backgrounds that carry a sense of progress alongside the foreground obstacles ramping up while aesthetically tying into a stages overarching theme. Whole worlds can run with this idea, look no further than Juicy Jungle's run of stages that take you through an entire fruit harvesting and production process. What AuroraMusisAmica has to say:

"Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the culmination of Nintendo EAD Tokyo's wild imagination, abundance of creativity, and masterclass of game design all coming together. It's not simply a retreading or evolution of their first go around beyond the Mushroom Kingdom's atmosphere, but a continuation of pushing boundaries and redefining what a platformer is capable of. Each world is a smorgasbord of every platforming idea under the sun, re-imagined, reinvented, and honed down to perfection. [...] Super Mario Galaxy 2 is everything its predecessor is, and more. It is the pinnacle of the platformer genre, and a masterclass of the gaming medium."

What Lord Azrael has to say:

"The absolute GOAT. Level variety is crazy. So many different ideas and mechanics that could hold up entire games on their own. Yet no level overstays its welcome - you're constantly moving on to something new. Great mix of tight platforming and exploration levels, with beautiful art design. What Ramsay has to say:

"Madeline controls brilliantly, with a moveset that it simultaneously easy to grasp as it is difficult to master. The level design is immaculate, squeezing every last ounce of creativity from both the level concepts and Madeline's moveset - to the point where the B-sides, C-sides and Farewell flat out utilise speedrunning techniques. The cherry on top is the game's heartfelt, well-told story that brilliantly utilises the game's difficulty as an allegory for anxiety and depression. Whilst the game demands that you get good, it at no point becomes condescending like many difficult games, but rather, is consistently encouraging the player."

What ShironRedshift has to say:

"And then on top of that, there's the wonderful set of accessibility options, which are among the best in the genre, IMO, which give you complete control over the kind of experience you want. You can just play the game normally, you can play the game on normal settings while trying to get all the Strawberries where if you're doing that there certainly are some particularly deviously placed ones for sure, of if that's not quite your thing, you can turn on accessibility options to the point where even stuff like bottomless pits won't hurt you if you like. [...] And so if nothing else already did, just giving those players those kind of options and that level of customizing your playthrough to your personal tastes, to focus on whatever your personally like in platformers certainly makes me feel if anything would deserve to be at the top of such a list, well, Celeste is certainly one such game."

What Big G has to say:

"This is as good as it gets, a wonderful "best of both worlds" 3D platformer that does it all, from precision platforming stages to the exploratory nature of prior 3D entries. This experimental period between open-ended 3D Mario and linear 3D Mario produced something positively mind-blowing, where nearly everything felt fresh and new and unlike anything I'd played before. It rewrote the book on what was possible in a 3D platformer, and is one of the best games ever made."

What DLH has to say:

"Super Mario Galaxy is the best of both worlds. Its gimmick can't be strapped onto Mario's back or plopped on top of his head. Indeed, Mario's equipment and abilities are largely the same as they were in Super Mario 64. However, the fundamental laws that govern the way the world interacts with his movement have changed. His long jump is still his long jump, but the world around him dictates whether that long jump will propel him along a flat stretch of ground, or shoot him into an eccentric orbit around small spheroids. Because of this, Galaxy's gimmick did not feel artificial, as if it were tacked onto previous innovations. Rather, it was transformative, breathing new life into mechanics that you already knew and loved, while refining those mechanics further."

Levels are plentiful but not too long, and there are enough powerups and secrets to comb through levels without detracting from the pure pleasure of movement."

What WestEgg has to say:

"Super Mario Bros. 3 takes the concept of Super Mario Bros., takes the spirit of what it wants to do, and then just reinvents, recontextualizes, and reimagines it in a massively improved way. Mario has never felt better to move and control on a 2D plane. The levels are short and concise, offering a great variety of enemies, obstacles, and challenges that never feels overwhelming. It brought the World Map into the platforming mainstream, and managed to hide secrets not just all over its levels, but even in the maps themselves. [...] The game just feels too big to have been possible on the NES. I still don't understand how they did it. And it feels as good to play today as it did back when I was a kid. It's pure, genius craftsmanship in the art of game making."

What Lulzwagon has to say:

"Pure platforming bliss distilled into a liquid that was then injected into every cartridge. Super Mario Bros 3. is everything I love about a 2D platformer. Not too many puzzles, not too many gimmicks, not too many underused mechanics introduced for faux-variety and short & sweet levels. I think 2D platformers are at their best when they are simply a test of reflexes, timing and wit. No game represents this purity more than SMB 3."

#2 Super Mario World

What CJCW? has to say:

"About as close to perfection as a game can get. The platforming itself feels tight, with Mario moving exactly as you'd expect him to based on your inputs. The powerups, both new and old, change your approach to enemies and obstacles encountered; the cape in particular adds a new degree of freedom to the Mario formula, and is used pretty ingeniously when required to find the game's more tricky exits. [...] The music is incredible, not just in how good it is on its own, but also in its refusal to simply parrot old series tunes - Athletic, my personal favorite, fits the stages it's present in with its jaunty rhythm and its balance between feeling upbeat and manic. The sprite work is fantastic, about as good as it gets in a 16-bit game, presenting clear enemy designs, well-timed animations, and gorgeous scrolling backgrounds. All in all, Super Mario World is everything a fan of platforming games could ever want, and sits comfortably at the top of my list of the best the genre has to offer."

What miserable Person has to say:

"Platforming perfection and one of the greatest games of all-time. Mario's romp through Dinosaur Land is rife with shortcuts, secrets, and teases of what's to come during an ever escalating quest to rescue Princess Peach. Mario feels perfect, his weightiness doesn't betray his ability to properly maneuver mid jump and real skill is needed to complete every level the game has to offer."

What MondoMega has to say:

Super Mario World resonates with me more than any other 2D Mario title; the colorful aesthetic letting it stand out, Koji Kondo's compositions obviously be exceptional (personally, i'm a huge fan of them using a single leitmotif throughout the game; but i'm glad they only decided to go for it once), Mario's looser controls allowing for a ton of fun and surprisingly precise movement (kinda an oxymoron there, I know) and the inter-connected feeling of Dinosaur Land truly expanding upon the world map first introduced in SMB3. I don't have much more I can say; it's good.

BADGES:
2nd Place Best Mechanics

What Nisaba has to say:

"I consider this to be the most important platformer. At the time of it's release, I could not believe what I was playing. Years of 2D platforming foundation ingrained in me...to suddenly be shattered so easily by Nintendo once they introduced that third dimension. I still cannot believe they managed to get it so right on their first try, how? This game is a testament to the genius of Nintendo and a true masterstroke of platforming that really has defined the genre in 3D. I cannot picture any other platformer being as essential to play and experience at least once so you too can know of it's innovation and delightful range of gameplay mechanics."

What DinoBlaster has to say:

"The bible of 3D platformers. Mario still controls like a dream and the music/sound effects remain timeless. After the first couple missions you can tackle the game in almost any order you want, and it's all magical. Exploring Peach's castle, jumping into paintings, grabbing Bowser by the tail, long-jumping and side-flipping anywhere I damn well please...I love this game."

What Kolibri has to say:
"This is the most essential 3D platformer of all time, and my favourite platformer altogether. Well over 20 years later, this polygonal pioneer is still an absolute joy to play. People all over the world know the impact this game had on the industry, and everyone can appreciate just how hard Nintendo nailed this on their very first try. I did not place this game above the other 3D Mario games (which I all love), merely out of nostalgia.
Mario just controls that well in this old game. The unbelievable variety of moves Mario can pull of in this game are simply unmatched (although Odyssey comes close). [...] I love the freedom of level progression. I love Mario's moves. I love the 'levels within levels' like the Pyramid in Shifting Sand Land. I love the music. I love 'surfing' around on a Koopa Shell."

Absolutely beautiful OP will edit my post with votes.

  1. Super Mario 64.
    1. I feel like this will be a number one for a lot of people, and rightfully so it's one game I've seen stand the test of time in terms of being out classed by other platformers, and frankly I have not seen another game match up even on Nintendo's end with how god damn fluid the entire thing is, not just over all super well designed. There's a reason the SM64 speedrunning scene has been going on for so long and will continue to flourish as more and more things are found that you can do with the game.
  2. Super Meat Boy
    1. I don't have much to say about this one past that it's just an extremely enjoyable title, and just like SM64 it's insanely smooth, movement doesn't ever feel out of sync and it allows for some pretty crazy stuff to be done.
  3. Mirrors Edge
    1. This game spawned so many parkour games like it, but it stands out on it's own with absolutely beautiful scenery, and it still looks beautiful and handles absolutely perfect, and just like Super Mario 64 people are continuing to find out new mechanics with small things in the game just further bettering the experience of it.
  4. Sonic The Hedgehog 2
    1. I've played this game too many times to count, the soundtrack, and the level design is superb, and I'm happy that Sonic Mania was another taste of that which makes me super happy with how SEGA has been handling the Sonic IP recently.
  5. Crash Bandicoot
  6. Cave Story
  7. Banjo Kazooie
  8. Super Mario Land 2: The Six Golden Coins
  9. Unravel
  10. Grow Home

With both Unravel, and Gone Home. I was really happy to see both EA and Ubisoft take a chance on these two platformers as they were very much refreshing to see such a unique style, and gameplay from both of them.

Eeeek, this will be fun. been thinking on it for a while.

1. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Bottom line is this game is the full platformer package. Retro Studios decided to make a second Donkey Kong Country game when everyone thought the best move was to go back to the Metroid Series for a 4th entry in the Prime series. Its easy to see why, they have so much passion for the characters and world that Rare had created, they even had David Wise come in and compose the music since the soundtrack was so important to feel of the originals! Not only is the game authentic to its predecessors it innovates upon them by bringing the game to the HD era with amazing graphics and stunning art but best of all some of the best level design in platformer history.

DKC:TF never makes its level's monotonous by constantly introducing you to new mechanics like a tornado in the savannah that uses rambi to fight strong winds and platforms that are destroyed by lightning. As soon as you finish that level you are thrust another area of the savannah that is now in danger due to a wild fire! The fire makes branches among other platforming staples turn to ash or become harmful to DK and crew. Every mechanic you are introduced to doesn't overstay its welcome and always brings a new one forward with each passing level. It honestly makes me sad that Retro's next game is Metroid, i feel as if they found their calling with the DKC series.

2. Inside
This game truly is cut from another cloth, if you have never heard of it do yourself a favor and keep it that way until you play it. This is a game worth going in completely blind. My first experience with the game was seeing the trailer at some conference or maybe just online somewhere and wondering what on earth this game could be about? It fell off my radar but then it came out and i saw the reviews coming in and they were very high and decided to pick it up for myself. This game rocked me to my core, it had an amazing story but better yet it had some really fun gameplay. It is a side scrolling puzzle platformer that is 2.5d that is very dark in its presentation and themes. I could gush over this game and its puzzles but i feel that discussing much of anything regarding this game is spoiling it for everyone, if possible please try this game out folks!

3. Ori and the Will of the Wisps
Ori and the Blind Forest was an amazing game with one of the looks in all of gaming history. When they announced the sequel i was beaming with excitement! Ori 2 took everything from the first one and either built upon it or reworked it completely. All the awesome platforming tricks from the first one like Bash and the Triple jump make a return but instead of the silly wisp attack where you would just mash X everywhere you were instead given options of new melee Weapons. From the sword you start with to my favorite Hammer you are given a ton of options in regards to combat this time around. There is a huge amount of freedom in how you get around the environments with the crystals you can equip which can let you stick to walls among other effects that you can tailor to how you wanna play. The music in this game is also awesome, Gareth Coker whipped up another banger of an OST that deserves to be on everyone's list of best VG soundtracks.

4. Super Mario 64
THE OG! Just about all 3D platformers owe it to this guy for paving the way to greatness. IMHO this game has to be played with an original N64 analog stick for the full effect, there just is nothing like an old n64 analog stick.

5. Rayman Legends
Rayman Origins was an awesome platformer but when legends was shown off with the amazing music levels it blew me away. This is hands down one of the most beautiful games ever created with some of the most enjoyable and creative platforming levels ever seen.

6. Super Mario Odyssey
Jump up superstar! A return to form after the Galaxy and 3D world series! Not saying those games were not great but they did not really follow the 64/Sunshine variation of the 3D Mario games. Odyssey added one of the coolest features in a Mario game ever! Cappy! Throw him on a T-Rex? Turn into the T-Rex. There are so many options to play and so many moons to find. A must for every new Switch owner's library!

7. Super Mario Bros 3
It was hard to pick between this and World but ultimately i just love the presentation of 3 so much. I played this after falling in love with the NA version of SMB2 and this game blew my mind. It was like the first one but now with a world map and all kinds of new powerup's.

8. Psychonauts
This game was my favorite for a while in the 2000's. I was an Xbox guy and in terms of platformers i had JSRF and Blinx...Once i saw Psychonauts i knew i was in for a treat. Tim Schaeffer humor + awesome platforming in unbelieveble worlds based on the minds of these silly characters? How can anyone say no? Cant wait for Psychonauts 2 this year!

9. Super Mario Maker 2
Gonna be honest, on the creation side i enjoyed Mario Maker 1 far more due to the gamepad and stylus but as a player i absolutely love the second one more. 100 Marios and VS are worth it alone, if only the online wasnt trash it would have been much higher on this list. Thankfully playing 3D world stages a long with all the additions to the other variants make this another must own for new switch owners.

10. Sly Cooper and the Thievius Racoonus
There are a lot of collectathons out there from the 90s to the 2000's but my personal favorite is the first Sly Cooper. The setting is amazing with its take on being a gentleman thief in an animal version of our world is just awesome. Stealth platforming is a lot of fun and the boss battles for me were really enjoyable. If you can find it around for a decent price the HD collection on PS3 is an amazing way to play this and its sequels today.

It's amazing seeing the OP finally posted and fully put together. Platformers are an amazing and varied set of games so I'm very excited to see the final results, I have my ballot but I need to tidy it up with writeups before posting.

What is this thread's policy on Lock-On Technology?

Basically I'm asking if Sonic 3 & Knuckles is considered one title, or are Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles completely separate games for the purposes of voting

1. Super Mario Odyssey

I am of the opinion that no 3D Mario game is less than excellent. This makes it all the more impressive that after 21 years of making them, Nintendo manages to up the ante once again and make their best one yet. Super Mario Odyssey has wonderful level variety, thrilling surprises, satisfying secrets, and a top-notch musical score. When I finished the main story and was informed that I only had about half the power moons I needed to unlock the secret final level, I was elated. I had an excuse to jump back into the beautifully crafted worlds and perfect platforming mechanics of Super Mario Odyssey. When I finished the initial secret level and then realized I now needed to DOUBLE my moon total once again, I was giddy. I'm the type of gamer that typically beats a game and deletes it from my hard drive, no matter how much I loved it or how much post-game there is. Super Mario Odyssey is the only time I can remember being not only willing, but ecstatic to jump right back in.

2. Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy

Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy was the first game I ever beat on what would become my favorite console of all-time, the Playstation 2. I still go back to play it at least once every year. I remember struggling as a young kid to find enough power cells to progress to the next area, scouring Sandover Beach and Boggy Swamp for what felt like hours. Now I know the game like the back of my hand, and can collect every power cell in about 3 hours. I still love going back though. The characters are wacky and the world is diverse, and something about those power cell celebration animations never gets old. I'm one of those who love Jak II and Jak 3 as well, but The Precursor Legacy will always hold a special place in my heart.

3. Inside

I considered leaving Inside off of my list entirely, because I wasn't sure whether to consider it a platformer or not. But I consider a platformer to be any game in which your primary mode of interacting with the game's systems is jumping, climbing, and (sometimes) swimming. Using these parameters, Inside counts, and damn, what a great game it is. There is no moment in that game that feels wasted, and no moment that feels like a retread of what you've already done. The bleak world, beautiful art direction, and genius sound design help lift the wordless narrative to heights that few other games are able to reach. Inside is proof that not only are video games art, sometimes they are great art.

Hollow-Knight-05-HD.png

One of my top 3 games of all time. For those like myself that ever thought, I love MetroidVania's but I really wish they where bigger while still retaining the same level of detail Super Metroid or SOTN, Hollow Knight delivers and blows past expectations. While on my way 100%+ I was still finding new areas 50 hours into my journey. Each area tells a story through its incredible artwork while delivering quality boss fights all over the map. The game boast a high enemy variety (168!) keeping you on your toes in every area.

14947.jpg

The flow of this game is phenominal, everything feels like it was created with a purpose and you are always moving. While the map is open from the start, the game is quite linear but never feels like that because it gives you enough visual cues to explore in a certain pattern.

ngiE3t8.jpg

I really enjoyed this game when I first played it but on this list it is the game I appreciate the most more and more over time. The amount of small details hidden in the game that I continuely to find out years later always amazes me. Playing for the first time when the

While some of the other platformers have wowed me on the tv screen, this game is the gold standard for platforming in the VR world. The game is full of love and charm, with excellent levels, great boss fights and enough hidden objects to keep you coming back to find everything.

super_mario_bros_3_nerd_speaker.jpg

A classic that took what I loved about Mario as a kid and aboslutly floored me. World is another fantastic game for 2D mario but 3 was the one that took Mario for me onto another level. The games scope seemed huge,https://www.gametripper.co.uk/wp-co...sh-Bandicoot-3-Warped-title-screen-banner.png

Little_Big_Planet_Banner.jpg

There is so much charm in this game. What starts out simple can turn into a complex platformer. Pairing that with the creation tools it gave people around the world an easy platform to make levels that you and others could play.
7c96b824447561a7382aca2d3e800001.jpg

I was late to the party playing this game, having only finly gotten around to it on the PS3 HD collection. I enjoyed the first game and then was immedietly blown away by the second game. The games whimsical story has you steal and visit a collection of great locations. I don't normally go for 100% in any game, but I coudln't stop until I had every last collectible in Sly 2.
Crash-Bandicoot-3-Warped-title-screen-banner.png

I really need to get around and play the version on the new collection. The PS1 version though I played over and over and over again. Once the game ended, I would go right back into the main menu and start a new game.
super-mario-odyssey-switch-hero.jpg

For 3D Mario thsi game easily takes the cake. Fantastic locations that are always fun to explore and make you want to find every last star. The hat mechanic also led a fun and different way to play while controlling enemies.
iconoclasts-switch-hero.jpg

I really enjoy this game. I love its story, which is much deeper than you typically find in a platforming game. I love its characters and locations, each unique and filled with charm and finally the bosses in this game is fantastic.

I don't know what's more difficult, putting together some of these graphics or actually narrowing down a list to 10!

It's been great working with PK_Wonder, WestEgg, and FiveSide. Really happy to be a part of this project.

Posting a little something at the behest of a certain avian ally. I tried to only include games where platforming/traversal is the prevailing mechanic, either for challenge or exploration. But man, platformers are just so great. Probably the genre I associate the most with gaming. Anyway, these are my favorite 10:

1. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
DKC2 is amazing, but Tropical Freeze makes me feel like I'm Donkey Kong. DK moves with a heft and weight in this game that I've never experienced in another platformer. It's even fun to swim! This feeling is amplified by Retro Studios' take on the roll jump, a mechanic that was also featured in Rare's DKC games with similar functionality, but here at any given moment the player can launch DK across the screen with a ludicrous amount of momentum to bypass obstacles and clear much larger gaps that wouldn't be possible in the classics. This is my favorite platforming mechanic of all time, and it behaves somewhat like Dodge Offset in Bayonetta - an ultimately unnecessary move for basic game completion, though it acts as the key for unlocking high level play and recontextualizes the entire game once mastered. Levels here carry on from Donkey Kong Country Returns by being extremely dynamic with an emphasis on platforms that move, tilt, vanish, crumble, and everything in between, while several setpiece stages feel like being in an action movie (minecart and rocket levels are goddamn amazing). Level construction is wonderfully intricate, often weaving together multiple escalating gimmicks per level in a style of design that evolves the Yoshi's Island approach by using those gimmicks to support an overarching level theme. Stage backdrops are painstakingly detailed to tell environmental stories with very few stages looking alike, and composer David Wise arguably one-ups himself from DKC2 to create a damn near bottomless well of incredible music. For platformers that emphasize challenging gauntlets to hop and bop through, you can't get much better than this.

2. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
DKC2 was my number 1 until Tropical Freeze came out. This is a tour de force of 2D platforming, and likely Rare's magnum opus. Shrouded in a gloomier atmosphere than what was likely expected for a sequel to the original DKC, DKC2 improves virtually all aspects of the original to become one of the most improved sequels ever. Controls are super tight, level geometry is clear, the soundtrack is GOAT, and there's a prevailing pirate theme among the enemies that ties everything together. Level gimmicks are memorable without being overbearing, and the game has my favorite implementation of collectables in any game. The hierarchy of banana -> banana coin -> Kremkoin -> DK Coin is perfectly executed, and secrets are so intelligently hidden in out of sight areas, as rewards for keeping an animal buddy alive, in level end goals, and even within other secrets. The big secrets are limited to a maximum of three Kremkoins and one DK Coin per stage, they don't all have to be found on a single run, bonus stages can be retried if you fail, and the game tracks each of these separately, so the coveted 102% never feels out of reach. Level design is snappily paced overall and makes rerunning levels for secrets a generally painless thing to do. You could even say that finding the secrets and unlocking the true ending is the real "game" here. With thicc atmosphere, perfect controls, great level design and brilliant secrets, this game pretty much has it all for me. For platformers that emphasize secret hunting, you can't get much better than this.

3. Sonic Mania
The year was 1993. Lil' Xtortion received a Model 2 Sega Genesis for Christmas, and with it, Sonic the Hedgehog 2. As my first console game, Sonic 2…wait, have I typed this before? Anyway, hello, my name is Xtortion and I love classic Sonic the Hedgehog games for their unique aesthetics and physics-based platforming. They were dead for a while, then Sonic Mania came out - drenched in 1990s glory - and became my favorite one. It's also different from nearly every other game on this list in that Sonic Mania has no interest in a world map or hub for level selection. This is a fast and furious game with arcade style pacing, whipping you from one act to the next with no time to breathe. Every few minutes, you'll encounter a new act with its own visuals, music, and boss fight. While Sonic Mania is a short experience, it's also highly replayable through its different characters each with their own movement, along with different routes in each of the stages. The soundtrack also bops so, so hard. Level design is labyrinthian when viewed from afar, but traversing these environments will find players intuitively navigating from one unique gameplay situation to the next, constantly changing direction but never feeling lost. The special stages slap and the sprite animations slay. Every stage is good and most of them are great. There's very little that I dislike about Sonic Mania. It's one of my favorite games of all time and conclusively proved that yes, dreams can come true.

4. Super Mario Galaxy 2
Level. Design. I don't enjoy controlling Mario in Galaxy 2 quite as much as in Odyssey, but the controls are still butter smooth and everything else more than makes up for it. This is the Yoshi's Island of 3D platformers, absolutely brimming with tight, handcrafted courses that each feature their own gimmicks that twist and turn on their way to the Power Star. Mario's controls are exceptionally sharp, and the Galaxy series' spin attack can give Mario just a bit more height after jumping or save him from narrowly missing a platform. Galaxy 2 wins out over the first game for me by streamlining the hub world and featuring less alternative gameplay style levels that don't mesh with me that well (while Galaxy 2 still deviates from the core mechanics on occasion, those stages just tend to work better for me). I also like the OST better (and boy, this is a spectacular OST), along with the postgame and the emphasis on having less stars per individual galaxy. This is a meaty adventure that remains top quality throughout its generous runtime - a veritable filet mignon of a 3D platformer.

5. Mega Man 9
Probably the most punishing platformer on this list, requiring actual near-pixel perfect precision at times. While this veers a bit into action-platformer territory, I find that the combat often serves to strengthen the platforming. Each enemy is an obstacle to impede Mega Man's ability to move through the level, and they can frequently knock him back into a pit - with no dash or wall jump from Mega Man X to makes things easier. There are some raw ass jumps to make in this game, and each stage has devious ways to switch up the movement, be it Tornado Man's rotating cylinders or Jewel Man's swinging platforms. The music here is incredible too, and the graphics are recreated authentically as an 8-bit game where each screen is immediately readable. Mega Man 9 represents an all killer no filler approach to platforming where each stage is just the right length, every few seconds presents a unique challenge, each enemy has a purpose, and landing each jump feels meaningful.

6. Super Mario Odyssey
Super Mario Odyssey feels like Banjo-Kazooie on steroids. Banjo's sense of "flow" when collecting the 10 Jiggies in each stage is amplified many times over with the 100+ moons in each stage here. The way the myriad of collectable moons pulls the player all over a level, as if they're dancing through a hailstorm of collectables, is not unlike the pull of gently pulsating agility orbs in Crackdown - a game that almost made this list. As a result, the player is constantly rewarded, and banking 30 or 40 accumulated moons into Mario's ship is something you'll need a cigarette after. Odyssey has a ton of mechanics - either core to Mario or obtained by capturing an enemy - that all feel sublime to control, and many of them are utilized in contexts other than just platforming. Mario's cap jump is a triumph of 3D movement, and captures like the Pokio or Gushen feel like they could be spun out into their own game. There's an effortless joy to controlling all aspects of Odyssey, and it's likely my favorite 3D platformer from a playability standpoint. What sends it over the top for me is a handful of setpieces and environments that break series conventions. Odyssey loses something for sometimes going overboard on the number of objectives to the point where there are more than a few stinkers, and the unlockable levels are nothing to write home about. But still, when you have a final sequence set to a vocal song that even 3D Sonic games would have to applaud, you know you did something right.

7. Banjo-Kazooie
Rare works their magic to one-up Super Mario 64 with a game with a much better sense of flow and personality. Not getting kicked out of a level after grabbing a Jiggy was revelatory to me as a kid, and each world features memorable blokes to meet, often presented with Rare's trademark sarcastic humor. Banjo has a wide moveset, and unlocking each new tool feels exciting. Banjo's moves are put to the test in many situations beyond platforming, as poking and prodding at the world is often encouraged to make interesting things happen. The real star for me here is the level hub, Gruntilda's Lair. As a kid, this place felt massive and mysterious. Unlocking each level felt like a feat, and I was always eager to explore each new area of the hub. The dynamic between exploring the lair (complete with its own puzzles and mini-challenges), and exploring the worlds creates an engaging pacing, and the worlds themselves are tightly designed - always ramping up in complexity, but never too large like in Banjo-Tooie or overstuffed with collectables like in Donkey Kong 64. Add on top of all that a Grant Kirkhope soundtrack for the ages, and you have a classic.

8. Ori and the Will of the Wisps
Recency bias and all, but this is an all-timer for me. Will of the Wisps improves on Blind Forest in a myriad of ways such that it would be very difficult for me to ever go back to the original. This almost slipped my list due to being more of a Metroidvania, but the platforming here would make Nintendo blush. Ori's controls are very unique among platforming characters, trading trade a high jump arc for one that's very long, which lends itself to effortless horizontal bounding. There's a 3D Mario-like execution of the controls, where countless mechanics and interactive level gimmicks all feel incredible to interact with, and some of the movement tools like Bash remain downright genius. Frenetic chase sequences return from Blind Forest and are arguably better than ever. Combine all that with heartbreakingly beautiful visuals and music, and Metroidvania structure or not, this is one of the best platforming-focused games out there. Spoilers: this will be on my GotY list this year.

9. Rayman Origins
Rayman Origins took me completely by surprise. Having basically no experience with the series, I picked up Origins near its release due to its positive word of mouth and low MSRP. What I got was a tough as nails momentum-driven platformer with gorgeous hand-drawn visuals and a quirky OST. Origins is at its best in its Tricky Treasure chases, in which the player has to barrel ahead at full speed while combining punches, full hops, short hops, slides, and other mechanics to catch a fleeing treasure. There's a flow to Rayman's gameplay that's hugely compelling to me, and the adventure feels meaty. Boss fights can be a little frustrating, but with platforming this good I'm not complaining. Oh, and a few words about the sequel: Rayman Legends is a stellar game in its own right, with improved visuals, collectables, boss fights, and cleaner momentum mechanics (by way of aerial attacks not stopping you dead in your tracks). But it's a much shorter game than Origins, and the 2D painting gallery approach to level select had the game feeling like less of a satisfying adventure than the first game. I recall feeling a bit empty when I finished it when compared to the original, but I'm not trying to rag on it too hard. Origins made a stronger impression on me but both games are must plays.

10. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Yoshi's Island is one of Nintendo's most creative games ever. Breaking out in a completely different direction after Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island introduces several original mechanics to the series. Yoshi himself feels great to control, being able to instantly whip around in any direction, while bouncing up and down sharply and swiftly. This is also one of the first Nintendo games I can remember that really goes all in on nearly every level having its own gimmick or twist that evolves on its way to the goal. The egg throwing mechanic makes for some decent combat encounters/puzzles and some spectacular boss fights, and the package is tied together in a charming crayon art style and jammin' music. My main grievance here is the collectable system. To 100% a level, and therefore unlock additional secret levels, the player must, in a single run, collect 20 red coins (which can be disguised as regular gold coins), five flowers, and basically not get hit. Factor in invisible question mark clouds and a frequent inability to backtrack to earlier parts of a level, and this system becomes really frustrating for me. Still, this remains one of Nintendo's most clever and offbeat efforts, and I couldn't make this list without it.

Best Upgrades - Ori and the Will of the Wisps
Flawlessly paced progression turns Ori from a scampering scamp into a figurative hot knife cutting through the butter that is the world.

Best Storytelling - Ori and the Will of the Wisps
I felt some emotions for Ori's cast of cute creatures, which is more than I can say for most platformer stories.

Best Soundtrack - Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
www.resetera.com

Is there a soundtrack better than Bloodborne this gen?

LOST MANGROVES Mangrove Cove is the first level, and its theme plays the part brilliantly. The leading saxophone has become a staple of Donkey Kong Country - the beginning notes of this track signaling the triumphant return of one of platforming's greatest franchises and the start of one of the...

Best Mechanics - Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Retro's take on the roll jump is the greatest of all time.

Best Level Design - Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Retro's knack for creating intensely dynamic, yet fair and readable courses with clear lines for movement still boggles my mind.

Best Art Design - Ori and the Will of the Wisps
H E A R T B R E A K I N G B E A U T Y. Every frame is a painting.

Best Boss Design - Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
The egg throwing mechanic opens up countless possibilities for creative boss fights that go beyond mere running and jumping.

Best Collectables (this isn't a bonus category but fuck it) - Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
Each collectable in DKC2 feels like it was placed by a single devious, escalating intelligence. And I stan for that intelligence.

Fantastic thread! Making a list of 10 in what is probably my favorite genre will be hard, so I'll have to think a bit on it before I can post. Really excited for the final results.

  1. Super Mario 64
  2. Super Mario Bros
  3. Ducktales
  4. Banjo-Kazooie
  5. Celeste
  6. Donkey Kong Country
  7. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
  8. Mega Man 2
  9. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  10. Super Meat Boy

Super Mario 64 is the pinnacle of platform games for me. Reletively simple to 'finish' but difficult to 'complete'. Absolutely huge variety throughout, revolutionary in many ways. I can forever go back to it.

Super Mario Bros (the OG!) is another game that I can go back to at any time. I actually appriciate how brief the game is. I love a Super Mario Bros speedrun. Later NES Mario games would go on to expand on the design but I truly think that there's something pure and timeless about the original Super Mario Bros. I've been playing it for 30 years and I don't see that slowing down.

Ducktales is a huge game from my childhood. The non-linear nature of the progression is super fun and that bounce mechanic has been copied but rarely matched. It's a joy to navigate and, at a certain point, I could get through some stages basically with my eyes closed. Fantastic design. And The Moon music.

Banjo-Kazooie was the 'Mario 64 beater' and, honestly, it almost did. It has wonderful level design and bought a lot of new to the genre really soon after Super Mario 64 had entered and changed the game. It's a phenomenal achivement.

Celeste was my second favourite game of 2018 and it was nearly the top. It's amazing. To bring such challenging and ingenious stage design to the genre and constantly surprise and delight - in this day and age. Just a gem.

1. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
I can't stress this enough, Tropical Freeze is one of the most underrated games of the generation, it deserved better votes by critics, deserved more attention by fans and belongs as king of platforming, it's the embodiment of good platforming: the character is bulky ? Then the player has to feel heavy. All platforms are contextualized, but not in a simple way, they blend into the level, it makes sense for them to be there and if the platform has to fall, rest assured a tree is going to burn or ice will start to crack to justify it. The soundtrack is one of the best in ANY game, certainly the crowning achievement of David Wise's career as a composer. The vibes are just spot-on but the biggest achievement of Tropical Freeze is being capable of standing on it's own: Tropical Freeze isn't like other Nintendo platformers, it's a completely different beast: the challenge doesn't lie only in finding collectibles, the game in itself is hard! You're bound to hit a wall during the campaign and that is good because your timing and your skill will improve thanks to this game.

2. Super Metroid
Arguably a better game than Tropical Freeze, but the thing is Super Metroid went beyond being a great platformer, Super Metroid gave birth to a genre of it's own, it sprawled an intricacy of labyrinths that made not only gamers, but game developers want to do something that probably included platforms, but with an hunger for closed doors, dead ends and mystery. Just like the Metroids, it evolved, gaining new power(up)s, maps and a sombre atmosphere.

3. Super Mario Galaxy
I'm not a Science teacher, but if I was, to the inevitable kid that said "I dislike science, it's boring" I would slap this game on their desk and wait for their excuses to crumble. Gravity is, simply put, one of the best game mechanics for a game about movement. This is a masterclass in 3D level design and also a perfect blend of platforming and story, Rosalina's background is essential and melancholic, balancing the carefree and charming locations of Mario's journey. The score sits right next to Tropical Freeze's in the videogames OST Olympus and has probably never been topped by any following Mario game.

4. Super Mario Galaxy 2
5. Hollow Knight
6. Super Mario Odyssey
7. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
8. Super Mario World
9. Banjo-Kazooie
10. Fez

Best Upgrades: Super Metroid
Best Storytelling: Super Mario Galaxy
Best Soundtrack: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Best Mechanics: Super Mario Odyssey
Best Level Design: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Best Art Design: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Best Boss Design: Hollow Knight

Honorable Mention to Metroid Zero Mission.

I'm very happy how this list turned out, I might comment on more games later.

Let's do this.

1. Yoshi's Island AKA Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES) - Absolute perfection. Nuff said.
F6bn.gif

2. Super Mario World (SNES) - A massive improvement on the already fantastic SMB3 formula. It took platformers to the next level. Literally.
ce8242ab719a9403-super-mario-world-gifs-get-the-best-gif-on-giphy.gif

3. Super Metroid (SNES) - Still the king of the subgenre it created after all these years.
26945350796_7cfc7ab577_o.gif

4. Super Mario 64 (N64) - 3D platformers and 3D controls done right period. Still the template for most genres to this day.
p2Xz1Dg.gif

5. Super Mario Odyssey (NSW) - Mario's glorious return to the Mario 64 style of 3D exploration platformer.
giphy.gif

6. Super Mario Bros 3 (NES) - Still the greatest 8-bit platformer ever made and a veritable phenomenon at the time.
image-asset.gif

7. Super Mario Bros (NES) - The big daddy of them all. It may not have created the platformer genre, but it might as well have. The game that put the genre on the map, basically.
5S5q.gif

8. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii) - Super Mario Galaxy, but perfected.
tumblr_o7uw11TEJf1rrftcdo1_400.gifv

9. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U) - It perfected the Donkey Kong Country formula. One of the most creative and mechanically interesting 2D platformers out there.
tumblr_ngzsrp043s1tulcmho1_500.gif

10. Donkey Kong 94 (GB) - Still the greatest puzzle platformer ever created.
giphy.gif

Bonus Categories:

Best Upgrades: Super Metroid - When the game starts it gives you just a taste of what Samus will eventually become before it takes everything away (and making you feel helpless in the processs). But by the time the game ends you will feel like the most destructive and unstoppable force in the universe.
Best Storytelling: Super Metroid - Aside from the opening, the game's story is told entirely via gameplay. No dialog, no cutscenes, no forced slow walking, no chatty annoying companions, and no journals, baby!
Best Soundtrack: Super Mario 64 - https://youtu.be/GBPbJyxqHV0 is all that needs to be said.
Best Mechanics: Super Mario Odyssey - the Cap-ture mechanic is so amazing and groundbreaking that many feel it should become an integral part of the series gong forward (or else risk future sequels feeling underwhelming and a step back by comparison)
Best Level Design: Yoshi's Island - Huge, explorable levels you can traverse at your own leisure. Each level has its own unique identity and mechanics. Also, perhaps the platformer with the most ingenious enemy placement ever.
Best Art Design: Super Mario Odyssey - Nintendo took a big and bold risk with the world and NPC design and it paid off in spades. Perhaps the most unique-looking Mario game ever created.
Best Boss Design: Yoshi's Island - Big, fun to fight bosses that also take full advantage of the hardware. You know who the boss will be well ahead of time, and YET they always manage to subvert your expectations. Magical.

What is this thread's policy on Lock-On Technology?

Basically I'm asking if Sonic 3 & Knuckles is considered one title, or are Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles completely separate games for the purposes of voting

EDIT: Sonic 3 (& Knuckles) will count as one game. Same goes for the 4 campaigns of Shovel Knight.

Ha, as expected didn't make it half an hour without a bit of a headscratcher! They were originally intended to be one game, but ultimately were released as two separate ones, so to be consistent they are considered two games for this thread. If the community really wanted to dispute this and consider Sonic 3 & Knuckles one title, it's open for discussion, however.

I'd prefer they were considered as one so that my list isn't *quite* such a mario/sonic heavy list lol

FWIW, I almost never see them considered as separate games. They're almost always referred to as "S3&K."

Reminder that despite getting shafted in the banner (unless I missed them), Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2 are platformers.

I'll have to see if I can come up with a list later. Platformers are my fave genre.

1. Super Mario Bros 3

The original GOAT, still. Beautiful aesthetics, the perfect physics, fun powerups, short creative levels with perfect level design. It is the most pure and perfectly designed platformer ever for me.

2. Mirrors Edge

Innovative beyond belief. As someone who has never much liked first person games, the fact that a first person platformer was able to pull off what it did is amazing. I remember my first playthrough I went through it just to get to grips with it, followed immediately by another playthrough with no shooting. Then the time trials. That's not even talking about the fact it is literally one of the most beautiful games ever made.

3. Locoroco 2

The Locoroco series is pure joy. Beautiful bright colors in simple shapes, in an alien world that's constantly animated and singing and bouncing. I've never much liked collectathons but these games are pure and simple, with fun sliding physics as you tilt the world with the shoulder buttons and jump by rocking the world. Using your momentum to "feel" the level layouts out for secrets, while finding out how to reach suspicious looking pockets, the game is a complete joy, not to mention the minigame and time trials.

4. Jak 2

More engaging combat and story than the original, too many detractors ignore the fact the second installment still pushed platforming much harder than the looser, easier Jak & Daxter. The addition of the hoverboard also gives you the option to improvise moves around the world, which has led to some of my favorite platforming memories of all time.

5. Hollow Knight

While metroidvania games might be somewhat muddy in the list, the fun I had navigating with my powers and blade was the most memorable part of the game for me (I suck at the combat). The expanded moveset combined with loose physics and dangerous challenges makes the game a joy to move through... which is good, because you'll be doing it a lot.

6. bit.trip Runner

The best of the runner genre for me. The first game still had the best aesthetics, and better readability than the sequel style. The music is carved into my brain.

7. N++

I've loved N since the old days, and N++ is everything N turned up to 11. Possibly the best physics in a platformer, it's a simple game and proof that platformers don't need much more than good controls and level design. Having pocket sized levels by the thousand is all you really need when your game feels this good to play.

8. Super Monkey Ball

Marble platforming should count, right? It's the best of the marble platforming genre, a concept I've loved since Marble Madness as a child. Had the best level design of the series right from the start, with fewer gimmick levels, less random elements, and the simplest controls.

9. World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck

My favorite co-op platformer! Incredible graphics, imaginative story full of magic, and sound effects that are somehow still stuck in my head decades later. My cousin and I spend too much time hitting each other then laughing when we accidentally get fucked by an enemy.

There's a dessert themed level! And a shrunken themed level! And an awesome shark boss fight! I've sadly never played the first game in the series, but I've always been surprised more people don't talk about this one, especially with the co-op.

10. Bubble Bobble

Replacing NSMBU on my list, I initially left it off because I wasn't sure of how much I felt it's a platformer - but it doesn't seem to fit too much into any other genre. Anyway, this is the actual greatest co-op platformer ever, and is one of my top 5 games of all time. It's perfect, what more is there to say?

BONUS BADGES

Best Upgrades: Super Mario Bros 3D World

Best Storytelling: Jak 2

Best Soundtrack: Super Mario Galaxy

Best Mechanics: Mirrors Edge

Best Level Design: Super Mario Bros 3

Best Art Design: Mirrors Edge

Best Boss Design: Hollow Knight

Fuck yeah this is exciting, reserving a spot for my writeups

EDIT: Alright here we go

1. Super Mario Galaxy 2
The absolute GOAT. Level variety is crazy. So many different ideas and mechanics that could hold up entire games on their own. Yet no level overstays its welcome - you're constantly moving on to something new. Great mix of tight platforming and exploration levels, with beautiful art design. Some of the best controls in any game ever. Actually made the Wii pointer super fun, always keeping your hands busy with stuff like star bits or Yoshi.

2. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Galaxy 2 might be the overall GOAT, but Tropical Freeze is the GOAT 2D platformer. Once again crazy level variety, with gorgeous setpieces and locales. David Wise on fleek with this beast of a soundtrack. Decently challenging with very mechanically clever levels, often mixing up to three or four different gimmicks in a single level. I also love how the worlds and levels thematically progress into each other. Possibly the best boss fights in a platformer too.

3. Celeste
Probably one of the most powerful and inspiring games I've ever played. Controls are super tight and responsive. Game is super tough but always fair and almost never frustrating. Almost flawless mechanics aside, Celeste also masterfully weaves its gameplay in with the story. One of the best moments in Gaming is confronting Badeline, elevated by the amazing track that plays in that section. I love how the physical journey mirrors Madeline's mental journey, and the closing stretch starting from obtaining the double jump up to the final climb is one of the most empowering experiences I've had.

4. Donkey Kong Country Returns
Pretty much just as good as its successor gameplay-wise. The worlds and soundtrack are a lot more generic, and the bosses are worse, but the level design is still ingenious. Plus there's more of them in this one.

5. Super Mario Odyssey
The best Mario's movement has ever felt. Simply moving around in this game is a joy, and stringing together Mario's variety of moves feels amazing. Peak level that exemplifies this is New Donk City, leaping from rooftop to rooftop. Crazy creativity on display here.

I don't have five more games off the top of my head that I feel strongly enough about to rank right now. If something comes to mind I'll add it in later

This seems like a great excuse to play/finish some games I keep meaning to, like that new Yooka Laylee game and the most Ori that I dropped because PC performance wasn't super hot at launch.

Is there a format for the votes to tally? Going to look up the other threads for reference. Adding text to each, just wanted to makes ure format was correct first!

As long as it's clearly ranked, any format is fine. All ballots will be chekced, double checked, and triple checked by humans anyway to make sure inconsistently listed/misspelled titles are counted under their intended entry, etc.
