Resident Evil 2 (2019) PC performance thread [demo edition]

Texture quality: Low (0GB); Medium (0.25GB); Medium (0.5GB); High (0.25GB); High (0.5GB); High (1GB); High (2GB); High (3GB); High (4GB); High (6GB); High (8GB)
So, if I'm reading this right .

All this is doing is allocating amount of VRAM to texture caching. When they're loaded High (0.25GB) would not look any different than High (8GB), but lower allocation space may cause streaming issues since it will be swapping through HDD .. which might not be that much of an issue on SSD's in the first place.

Is my understanding correct ?

No it's normal. I can't maintain 60FPS on a GTX1080+6700K even at 1440P.
The game's just demanding.

I recommend dropping HBAO+ to SSAO (not HDAO as that one is too light) and Volumetric to medium, the difference in this game is imperceptible even in side by side comparison and you likely won't find any until you zoom in on images. Also drop the textures from High (8GB) to High (6GB) (or even lower, it seems to just decide how much of texture is streamed from HDD and how much is preloaded initially) because at 80% of 4K you are using a lot of your video memory.

I'm not sure about performance in DX11 vs DX12 as I only tried DX12.
Thanks for the tips, I have only tried DX12 as well, wondering if it performs better in DX11 tbh, graphically DX12 won't be superior will it? Generally that hasn't been the case in any DX12 game I have seen so far.

The game runs fine for me on mostly High at 1080p with a i7 2600k and a GTX 970.

Wont post the link until I know its safe but this has popped up...

Edit: Can somebody confirm I can actually post it without getting banhammered to oblivion?
Trainers should be fine to post. This specific one might help you to get around the timer but it's not like the whole game is there.

I also think Alt+F4'ing gives you 30 minutes back. I've done it a couple times because I'm messing with settings and resolutions and it keeps restarting to 30. Can anybody else test this?

Oh so more vram means faster streaming?

This is my guess as well.
If true then it's totally unnecessary in a slow game like this, even more so if you have SSD.

Just played 5 mins on my 1080ti, I7 3970x and I gotta say, at 4k max settings I cannot get 60fps stable, even when dropping down to 80% rendering it does not maintain 60fps.

Is this just me?
1080t, i5-8600k here, can't get stable 60 FPS at 4K either even with volumetric lightning on medium. I guess I will spend some time on tweaking the settings on release day....

Runs way better than 7. Looks super washed out. I have to optimize the the brightness settings on SRGB and then switch to b.207 to help with that. I guess I could have optimized brightness in sRGB but I forgot to.

This PC demo is no bueno. I'm running it at 60fps and at recommended specs and kept experiencing random dips and stutters as I played, and the settings didn't matter. The PS4 demo may struggle to reach 60fps but it didn't have stuttering. I'm disappointed.

4670K
570 4GB
8GB

And gamma/black levels are as screwed up on PC as it is on PS4.

Are you on Windows 10 ? Man .. 30 minutes really is nothing for testing all these variables lol.
Yes I am...
I know, but I only have 1:30 left, so I'm changing something playing for 40sec and then alt+f4 to get back to 1:30...

Giving PC players full options and two APIs, but only 30 minutes is criminal ;)

R5 2600/RTX2070 and tried it out at 3440 x 1440. Some weird slowdown/stuttering when fighting enemies, including the one room with multiple zombies.

R9-390, i5-6600, 16GB @1080p I can maintain a mostly stable 60fps (60-85 with the frame rate unlocked)

Textures to 3GB, Shadows Medium with TXAA and everything else on high. Pretty game.

Is Shadow Cache an FPS killer with very little visual difference like in RE7?
I tried it, Shadow cache to ON saved me 10-12FPS vs shadow cache to OFF. This is on DX11.
Yep

It'll look the same, DX12 is about more efficient pipeline but in practice it's been opposite lately because games seem to be developed with DX11 in mind.
Try turning Shadow cache to ON and see if it helps, I can hit 60+FPS now consistently at everything max. I don't use all my available VRAM for textures as I dropped textures to High (0.5). The visible difference is nill, it's just a caching process.

Ah, good to know.

I have a 6GB 1060, I can see dedicating 2 or 3GB for High textures and remaining for the rest of the effects. CA, motion blur, DoF will be off. Volumetric lighting medium, SSAO and Shadow quality to Medium, Shadow cache = On.

This is about the same setup I played RE7 on (minus the texture Vram part) and I was able to play it at 1440p/60 FPS on my moderate gaming laptop just fine.

"Ok, this works...for now....When you are running out of time - minimize demo (alt+tab) and terminate process through task manager. Start game - you have 30 minutes again.

Tested couple of times - it works...for now."

From steam forum.
Doesn't work for me!?

Terminated process, still says only 15 minutes left...

The timer is really shitty, should have been 2 hours at least!

4K with a 2080Ti + 2700x here.
On DX12, everything maxed out: the demo runs between 60fps and 80fps, but has drops below 60 and even below 50 in certain areas.
Only by changing Volumetric Lighting from max to medium, I get pretty much consistent fps between 75 and 85 with some rare drops in the high 60s.

I have a 1080 which has 8GB RAM, at 1440P I can't go over 2GB textures without it redlining. I'm sure it'll run alright for the most part but going above available video memory always leads to some sort of issue here and there. I just put it down to 1GB.

And you noticed no visible difference in image quality or streaming issues at 1GB (guessing you're using an SSD) ?

Nope, if there was visible texture streaming I'd notice. Game is so dark and blurry (don't even try to turn TAA off, it's shimmerfest without it) that even if it was there I didn't notice it. Then again I ran it on SSD.

Good to know. At least the game is offering granular-ass setting levels for anyone interested.

Is that at 4k using DX11? What do you have for bloom, lens flare etc?

That's at 1440P but I also have a worse card than you i.e. a 1080.
I have everything on max now (textures are at High 1GB), including the settings I advised you to turn down, the only thing I changed was ran the game on DX11 and turned Shadow caching on.

Nice will give it a shot now, I tried playing at 30fps and I just couldn't do it, controls were awful, have noticed that Vsync off doesn't cause that much tearing either from what I have seen

Textures go over 8 GB VRAM?!?!?!
And you will hardly ever see a difference. After messing with settings for half an hour almost taking up my demo time between pausing and unpausing, I finally found a flag outside of the RPD which actually changes depending on whether textures is set to high(0.5gb) vs high(1gb) and high(2gb) and that's on a 3GB 1060 so I dunno how the game itself treats my graphics card.

I also had a legit game crash with an error message when I accidentally put image quality to 200% after maxing the rest on DX12.

Overall having played base PS4 and pc I'm just gonna stick with PS4. I'm dissatisfied with just how little the graphics seem to actually scale based on exponentially insane settings and how bad anything but TAA looks as they put an ugly sharpening filter over which you cannot turn off anywhere in the menus.

Too bad PS4 seems to use the "interlaced" setting. Also, turning on World Space Reflections seems to cause an ugly trail-filter effect over reflected objects as you pan the camera. In many areas I find the game actually looks better and clearner without it, and there's still reflections just not real-time.
