Former Naughty Dog developer Bruce Straley has said that Resident Evil 4 has the "Best opening fight in any game."

The Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and The Last of Us co-director, like many others, has been getting ready for the upcoming release of Resident Evil 2's remake and decided to revisit Shinji Mikami's critically acclaimed 2005 title.

Straley initially posted a photo of his Nintendo GameCube and a copy of the survival horror title.
He followed it up with another tweet, focusing on the opening fight between protagonist Leon Kennedy and the villagers.

Of course, it's the truth. Managing and upgrading weapons was so addicting, perfectly paced, it'll take a miracle for something to be as good as this.

It was an awesome moment and one of the reasons I regard Resident Evil 4 so highly. I remember that I died almost instantly to the chainsaw guy on my first playthrough.

Yep. The fact that it's set in an environment similar to the one I live (North Italy), made it the best opening I've ever experienced in my life.

Best opening to any video game ever. A flawless tutorial played out through uncompromised gameplay. A player that can handle the village fight can handle everything else in the game.

He's right. I don't know how Mikami managed to fudge the opening of Evil Within in comparison. I have zero motivation to carry on with that game :|

I'll join the chorus: Resident Evil 4 is such a spectacularly well-designed game. From the opening through the ending, it always keeps things interesting rather than retreating to some kind of formulaic design standby to pad its length out. Still the best third-person shooter I've played.

I will always remember the night I started playing Resident Evil 4 for the first time. A friend of mine, who doesn't care for all the RPGs I play, dropped by and saw me playing RE 4. "I see you got your taste in video games back."

We proceeded to fanboy for several minutes when the Chainsaw guy took off Leon's head.

RE 4 really is a great game.

I remember I found a demo in some town in Texas in. The middle of a Road trip and I couldnt stop thinking about it for days. The design is so elegant and sets up the tone for the rest of the game.

Well, I'm gonna have to be the pedant and point out the village scene isn't the first fight in Resi 4..

EDIT: huh, spoiler fail.. was meant to say "he's right, of course"

It's pretty good, yeah.

TLoU opening segment is up there too, to me. Even though it's mostly automated, the delivery is excellent.

First time with RE4 was truly amazing. I was in a little videogame store with my friend. We had to skip school for some reason so we went there to try it. He played MGS3 and I RE4. Unforgettable.

I watched my friend play it for the first time and he stood at the entrance and shot everyone and the chainsaw guy never spawned. He never moved from the entrance and killed everyone until the cutscene happened.

I assumed he would die quickly so I didn't tell him anything... guess I should have told him about the shotgun in the house.

The actual first area also deserves some praise for effortlessly tutorializing the player. In the span of just a few minutes, the player will fight a single enemy, then utilize a context sensitive maneuver to escape the house, then fight two enemies at the same time, then deal with some traps while fighting more small groups of enemies, and then finally deal with the last enemy that can ambush the player from behind if they aren't careful. Over the course of this brief area, the player has all the tools they need to apply during the village fight's skill check that prepares them for the rest of the game.

He is not wrong, RE4 is a masterclass in game design. It still baffles me that these guys had this game and Ico as major influences and still dropped the ball in my eyes with TLOU, these two set the blueprint for escort quests done right and they compromised on the biggest reason why : enemies do not ignore them.

Resident Evil 4 is proof that there is absolute goodness within humanity and in the end we might just be alright.
