I would really like to know what is some of y'all opinion on Esports, since you know, many make fun of them.

Complicated issue. Do I disagree with the tournaments, viewership, sponsors, or organizations? No. If Klask can have a world championship, then so can a game. However, I find the fact of company ownership (no one owns baseball or football), changing rules through game play additions (chess doesn't add new pieces), and difficulty to learn (you try bringing someone to a bar and telling them how DOTA 2/ Overwatch work) all to be troubling.

Richard Lewis has done more for the eSport communities he's been involved in than anyone else. He fought for years for players to get better contracts, personally supported players of the CSGO and LoL community who had serious life issues and did that without any blitz, uncovered dozens of cases of corporations trying to get control, e.g. exclusivity deals with the ESL that would have suppressed competition and resulted in worse outcomes for players, cheating, match throwing, etc.

He always maintained a high journalistic standard, even if some sad people tried to somehow link some of his personal tweets they didn't like with his actual work. Richard Lewis worked for dozens of publications over the years. He left the Daily Dot (which is considered left-ish) when they edited some of his reports without his consent and worked for Breitbart for a while because he was allowed to report on eSports with the guarantee of not sabotaging his work. This, among some other out of context tweets, led to some people, including in this thread, to suggest he is somehow a Trump supporter, when he is actually quite the opposite.

He has done good in this industry for over a decade and declined multiple well-paying jobs over the years. He later joined Turner to make sure the CSGO ELEAGUE series on TV was better managed than the clusterfuck that was CGS (an earlier attempt of Counter-Strike on TV that damaged the scene and took years to recover).

It is beyond sickening to see some of the comments in this thread.

Can you elaborate why his esports work on Breitbart also included anti-leftist and anti-refugee articles?

You speak as an authority, but you are either falsifying information about Lewis or you're too ignorant to be speaking in this fashion.

Maybe one day it will actually conduct itself like a billion dollar industry too. And cut down a bit on treating women like shit and general toxicity. Or give awards to people who very much embody those things.
I have about as much faith in that happening as I do, say, in the US becoming a socialist utopia, but hey, it's good to have dreams.
Some great people won awards and constantly do great things in esports, and im not going to shit on an entire industry because of some of the degenerates that happen to be apart of said community. A lot of work obviously needs to be done as this industry continues to grow.
But I replied to that other person because its being applied that the industry isn't legitimate, which isn't the case. I don't like Richard Lewis's views but he won an award based off of his investigative work, and it did do some great things.

But since you think he's being taken out of context, I have an idea - can I ask you for the context?

uKsKTNM.png

It was a year that saw the media endorse the "listen and believe" ideology pushed by radical feminists that saw innocent men smeared for rapes that never occurred. Meanwhile, those same feminists crowing about "rape culture" remain tight-lipped when we have an increasing volume of rapes and sexual assaults at the hands of immigrants from predominantly Islamic countries.

It was a year where the so-called progressive left supported white people posing as black people to become celebrities, while simultaneously condemning the entirely fictitious crime of "cultural appropriation." It was a year where politicians had to apologise publicly for stating that "all lives matter" because it is racist to imply we are all equal.

2015 was the year where a recent recipient of gender reassignment surgery, [Caitlyn Jenner - replaced deadnaming], won not only the woman of the year award but also the Arthur Ashe Courage Award over a nineteen year old girl, Lauren Hill, who battled brain cancer while holding down a starting position on the Mount St. Joseph basketball team.

Contrast that with the dual outburst alongside from colleague Klein and you can see that GamerGate seems to have become the boogeyman once again, despite previous admissions that they were not active. "GGers are criminals. I wish them nothing but pain and misery," he said, following it up with, "There isn't a single GGer I wouldn't laugh at if they were on fire. No regrets."

What makes a good end of year celebration? Drinking with friends? Music? Gathering outside for a traditional fireworks display to start the new year, and all those empty resolutions, with a bang? Well, at least one group of people had to shelve their celebrations as liberal party-poopers deemed fireworks to be potentially emotionally scarring to their refugee population.

These key details were conspicuously absent when the press wanted to serve up their sacrificial lamb in exchange for page views from outraged gender warriors.

Context, please. Actually please give me context. My expectations are that you're not going to respond with the adequate context lacking from these, or you're just going to leave your post as a drive-by.

Surprise me, show me that you're not someone who made a low-effort attempt to shield Lewis from accusations of bigotry. Do it.

speaking of context

not a Trump supporter, no; just celebrated when he won, worked for Breitbart, befriended Milo, and engaged/engages in anti-immigrant, anti-feminist, and anti-SJW rhetoric

thanks for the context, though

he choked a competitor. he should not work in the industry anymore, period, and the fact that literally anyone pays him to still do that work is fucking shameful. you want to talk about professionalism? show me anyone who gets to stay on ESPN or write for any halfway-respectable sports vertical after physically assaulting a player. FOH.

there are a million other reasons why he is also a piece of shit, all of them in this thread, but that single one is more than enough.

also I thought I added it to my multi quote but apparently not, someone early in the thread was like "oh but he's *the* esports reporter" but isn't that Slasher's zone? Slasher has always felt like that to me (and I don't even like HIM that much either)

kotaku's compete also shit on RL from a high height, fam, y'all wilding.

I think it's hilarious when people say that The Mainstream Media is a problem.
Out of the countless articles they've published over the past couple decades, there have been maybe 4 or 5 notable fuck-ups.

Compare that to the practically daily bullshit that comes out of the minds of guys like Richard Lewis, Ian Miles Cheong, and so on. Nevermind that they also tend to be sexist bigots that frequently participate in harassment campaigns.

But yeah, something needs to be done about The Mainstream Media.

Ah yes, the jackass that assaulted someone at an esports event, harasses and threatens people via Twitter or in his streams, peddles baseless conspiracy theories that are only supported by his equally pathetic fanbase (or racist sad sack, cheating Twitch streamers), and who worked for Breitbart. That award is a joke.

So what I'm getting out of this is that the founding father of eSports is some violent xenophobic bigoted harasser. Very good.

While we're at it, are we going to also learn that CSGO ELEAGUE's pool is funded by Nazi gold? How deep does this rabbit hole go?

So, I just read his wiki article:

"In 2015, Lewis's Reddit account was banned from commenting or posting on the League of Legends subreddit due to "sustained abusive behavior" after several warnings and a temporary ban. Shortly after, Lewis wrote several articles questioning the relationship between the moderators of the subreddit and the game's developer Riot Games, revealing that subreddit moderators were asked to sign non-disclosure agreements with the developer and that several former moderators were later hired by the company. A month later, a moderator for the subreddit announced that his content would be banned from the site after users on the subreddit critical of Lewis were allegedly harassed upon Lewis posting their comments on Twitter. "His YouTube channel, his articles, his Twitch, and his Twitter are no longer welcome in this subreddit. We will also not allow any rehosted content from this individual." In an interview with Kotaku, Lewis defended himself by disputing the initial allegations of abusive behavior, and argued that he had never asked his followers on Twitter to harass Reddit users. "The mods are doing this to try and get me fired [from The Daily Dot]." In his Facebook post announcing his resignation from The Daily Dot several months later, Lewis cited the content ban among his reasons for leaving, saying "...it had a huge impact on my work and working environment. Important stories pertaining to League of Legends that I have written have gone unnoticed."

The Breitbart/Trump thing is the big one but he also used the stage to denounce his former employer The Daily Dot and attacked Kotaku as his interview with them made him look bad. And now you know. A 10/10 scumbag. The worst thing about this is that his eSorts "journalism" career didn´t even take a hit after that one. What an industry ladies and gentlemen.

Here are two articles that were specifically called out
The Counter-Strike Boston Major Is Fake War Presented By Real War
Overwatch Pro Quits After Harassment Over Whether She Was Really Playing [UPDATE]

The CSGO article is ridiculous. I watched that Major and the impression this journalist tries to paint was not at all the case from the average viewers perspective.

The Overwatch article is bad... really bad. It does come across as a severe lack of research on Kotaku's part.

Even with this and plenty of other posts here detailing the vile things he's done, you still get people defending him. Case in point...
