One thing that always bothered me was that because the characters were so thin the aliasing was really apparent, Rinoa's legs literally looked like stairs. This is a great upgrade.

Ironically since Twitter's video player is such shitty quality it doesn't look much better

I mean, one of the major themes of the game is characters trying to act like grownups but failing because they've been forced to 'grow up' too fast and have no role models. Squall acts detached and 'cool' because he mistakes that for maturity. Quistis puts herself into a 'big sister' role, despite being barely older than the other characters and having not figured out her own shit.
Yes, Quistis mistakes her sisterly feelings for love and that's why she goes after Squall. She realizes she never actually was attracted to him later.

That's not why Squall acts detached. He has a severe abandonment complex and is extremely afraid of losing people he cares about, so he tries to minimize close connections.

If we ever get a full blown remake that is one of the things to fix, well that and Squall's intolerable edge lord personality.
Quistis abused her power as teacher to try and seduce Squall. He was right to be disgusted by that.

Squall's personality is a huge localization mistake. He does blow people off, but he has like 9 different ways he does it that fit his actual personality and character better as well as the individual situations. The localization team decided to merge all of them into a single catchphrase of "whatever". Using whatever for every situation makes him come across as an uncaring asshole.

Legends of Localization: Squall’s “Whatever” Line in Japanese Final Fantasy VIII

The English version of Final Fantasy VIII is filled with the phrase "whatever". What was the Japanese version like?

I can't believe this teacher -> whatever
No big deal -> whatever
Well, excuse me -> whatever
Man, you're annoying -> whatever
Sure, I guess -> whatever
Get off my case / leave me alone -> whatever
Oh, geez -> whatever
Doesn't matter -> whatever
I don't care -> whatever

People it's ok.

Just buy it on PC. We will mod both HD backgrounds and Squall silky OG hair over the anime garbage. His face is fine.

You're welcome.

Meme is great
New character models are great
Same old blurry pre-rendered backgrounds, not so great, but I guess Final Fantasy VIII Remastered Except for the Backgrounds would've been too long of a title.

Miyamoto is still alive. He leads an underground resistance cell with his mute cyborg buddy, Mark 'Metal' Cerny. They all ride around on bicycles. Sakurai is also still alive, with random, religiously powerful minigames attributed to him found all across the world, leading players on a cryptic treasure hunt.

An army of Kojima clones hunt them down, authorities believing that the best way to corner a game developer is to think like one.

Old man Kojima makes conventional films. They're fine, even entertaining in short bursts, but there's something missing... The people seem to like them anyay.
Miyamoto's resistance has sent a small team led by Cory Balrog into the Alaskan wilderness to recruit the only man who can bring an end to all this madness...

A man who secluded himself to escape the sins of his past
A man who vowed to never kill again

The Last hope for humanity

A man named... Hidetaki Miyazaki

Has anyone here played the French localization of the game? We'll probably get it with the remaster and I'm interested in knowing if Squall's personality is better preserved in it.

Shes a year older than him
That's not the issue. Squall feels like she's abusing her position with her constant advances on him. She basically sexually harasses him.

At the very start of the game escorting Squall from the infirmary:

Quistis: "Squall. Is there something on your mind?"

Squall: "Not really."

Quistis: "Not really. Hahaha!"

Squall: "What's so funny?"

Quistis: "Funny? No, no, it's not that! I'm just happy. I feel like I'm finally beginning to understand my student a little. That's all."

Squall: "I'm more complex than you think."

Quistis: "Then tell me. Tell me more about yourself."

Squall: "It's none of your..."

Quistis: "...Business!"

At the fire cave:

Quistis: "You now, the boys often choke on this test when I come with them. I guess my charm makes them nervous."

Squall: (...Whatever.) JP: "(I can't believe this teacher)"

Quistis: "I'm just kidding! Trying to keep you relaxed, that's all."

After Squall dances with Rinoa at the graduation ceremony:

Quistis: "You really are an excellent student. Even that dance was perfect."

Squall: "Thank you."

[Quistis just stands there.]

Squall: "Yes?"

Quistis: "So you'll dance with someone you don't even know, but you can't even stand being around me?"

Squall: "...Whatever (JP: Sorry or Well, excuse me). You're an instructor, and I'm your student. It's kind of awkward when you don't say anything."

Quistis: "That's true. I was like that myself. ...Oh, I completely forgot. I wonder what's to be come of me? I've come to give you an order. You
and I are to go to the 'secret area'. It's where students secretly meet up and talk after curfew. It's inside the [training center]."

Squall: "What do you want to do there? Are we going to tell everyone they're violating curfew? If that's the case, forget it. Leave that for the
disciplinary committee."

Quistis: "Go get changed and meet me in front of the [training center]. This will be my last order."

::Quistis forces Squall meet her at the secret student date spot abusing her power in a last ditch effort to get Squall to open up to her::

The reason Squall rejected Quistis' advances is because she's basically his sister
It never comes up if that's part of it. Squall was just putting up walls because of his past trauma and he was really put off by Quistis repeatedly flirting with him with her having a position of power over him.

Quistis goes over her own feelings after the big twist:

Quistis: "I...remember. Yes, I remember now. Things didn't work out too well at my new home. So I came to Garden at the age of 10. That was when I was first noticed Seifer and Squall. Seifer and Squall were always fighting."

Squall: "Yeah... Quistis always used to break us up."

Quistis: "Yes! That's right! Seifer was a kid who always needed to be the center of attention. But Squall always used to ignore him... But eventually they would end up fighting. Squall could have easily walked away from it, but always took up the challenge. He should've just ignored him, but Squall, almost in tears, would say...'I gotta do my best by myself. Or else I won't be able to see Sis'. I guess I was trying to take Sis...I mean, Ellone's place. I tried, but to no avail... That's probably it! Even after becoming an instructor, I couldn't stop thinking about Squall. I thought it was...love. I had to hide my feelings because I was an instructor, but I've come to realize it wasn't. It was my childhood feelings as a big sister that lingered... Oh well..."

[An embarrassed Quistis walks away from everyone. Squall goes over.]

Quistis: "(A misunderstood love...? Actually, I had completely given up when Rinoa came into the picture.) Hey! It must be the same for Seifer! I'm sure Seifer has forgotten his childhood, too. But whenever he sees Squall, his inner feelings start to boil, and..."

tl;dr Quistis came to Garden at age 10 and met Squall and Seifer then. She noticed how Squall was constantly talking about meeting his missing sister and Quistis sympathized and wanted to console him by replacing his sister. Eventually she mistook these sympathetic feelings for Squall as love and kept trying to force a relationship for basically the past 8 years.

Squall was an idiot. Quistis was right there.
So it's not just me on the Quistis "best legs" Trepe hype train?

Fucking goddess.

My dudes (and dudette).

Quistis is based as fuck, love her design, don't even care if she's long haired Aya Brea with glasses.

So that's why I've always liked Quistis...
