I find it highly unlikely a whole genre of music will just die. Internet hyperbole will just make it seem that way.

Rock will be reborn when we have another Nirvana.

I don't think we're gonna get another Nirvana. Not because of a lack of talent or what-not, just the industry is a completely different. We're definitely due a 90s Gen X-style cultural kick back against commercialism though.

lot of screamo links. no rocks.
this is rock

Get out of it, that's closer to a Musical or Opera.

I think rock is dirty, straight forward and downright lascivious:

(I know, it's punk, but it's punk fucking rock!)

God, I hate Queen.

pixies rip off. and that isn't rock.

You call out a 'pixies rip off' then post... Nirvana? :D

I blame Radiohead for sterilizing rock, and those turn-of-the-century "garage rock" bands for failing to do anything creative with it.

I dunno about that. There were loads of good, 'creative' rock bands on the fringes around that time. Even in the 'mainstream' you had At The Drive-In drop Relationship of Command (2000).

Oh so you're just one of those types that equate anything they don't like as not fitting a definition. Okay

I tend to use rock as an umbrella term, with the numerous genres and sub genres that came out of that rock foundation.

imho, there's been a lot of great rock releases in the past few years. It's harder to find them, but there's still some real gems.

Wolf Parade have also been excellent after reforming, their album released last year 'Cry Cry Cry' was fantastic.

here's some good live session performances from tracks on the album:

I don't care if I sound like a basic bitch but Car Seat Headrest are pretty fantastic
They are, Teens of Denial is excellent and I'm really fond of the new Twin Fantasy release. I haven't checked out much other than that, but they're definitely worth paying attention to.

People who think rock is dead probably only listen to shitty radio music. So of course they think it's dead, they have no idea what they're talking about.

Rock will never die.

There are far too many classics and too many people (like myself) who love those classics.

(literally listening to "Hammer to Fall" right now lol )

I feel like those bands rested on their laurels. They got hot and failed to innovate/re-invent themselves or their sounds. Instead of Nirvanas, we got a bunch of Pearl Jams.

What bands are we talking here?

I'm thinking of things like June of 44, Oxes, Mogwai, Tortoise - stuff like that. If you mean them, do you really think they didn't develop their respective sounds...?

Also: fuck Pearl Jam.

I was talking more along the lines of The Black Keys, The Vines, The Strokes, The Hives etc etc. You know, the "OMG ROCK AIN'T DEAD YET WE REAL ROCK AND ROLL" bands.

Rock is plenty "alive" in places outside of the US. It's just mass media has taken complete control of the psyche of the American youth where they are told what is cool and hip, like Cardi B and Fortnite.

Ah, okay. I still consider them pretty mainstream.

There was plenty of other stuff going on at the fringes that was really creative, such as some of the bands I mentioned. They mostly developed their sounds over time too.

I'm not sure why people keep saying rock is dead. Tons of amazing, new artists out there. I guess no one listens to modern rock or alt-rock radio anymore?
Boston, the city of Boston, has no modern rock/alt rock radio channel. (WBOS is shit since the sale last and barely plays new music.) The last good alt-rock channel sold out last September. Everything that is left is classic rock.

Teens not caring about rock is horseshit. There are always a ton of kids enjoying their first festival at every one I go too. Gigs still have plenty of people under drinking age too.

Well radio is dead. The largest audience for radio today is talk radio. I think people, especially older generations, tend to hear what plays on the radio and believes that is what's popular with today's youth, but young folks simply don't listen to radio at all. Plus iHeartMedia, which owns like 90% of radio stations in the US is about to go belly up with almost a billion dollars in debt. It's a dead medium.
