He was very close back then and that was back when he was an unknown quantity. Now everyone knows who he is and the lines are already drawn.
You're right, they are already drawn. That's why this will have no consequences for him. People appalled by this are already voting against him. The rest either dont care or will vote for him no matter what.
And if things hold as is he'll be voted out in November and we can get to work on fixing this shit show.
