Let me start by saying I am judging them as a tier 3 star wars fan first(lol).I am putting TLJ second cause ROTS and JJ retconned it to hell, basically the only thing that matters from that movie is Lukes Death. .Rogue One has arguably by far the best space battle of Disney movies, the Darth Vader ending scene is amazing and ultimately the movie respects the canon with no retcons out of its ass.The movie even bridges the OT and PT movies in a respectful way.Even the black stormtroopers are the coolest, way better than the red palette swap we got in TROS!

Not gonna read OP or replies until I see TROS tonight, but while I think Rogue One is good, I just don't think any of the characters work for me. And all the Darth Vader stuff is so pandering.

The Last Jedi is the best Disney Star Wars movie, and I just rewatched it last night.

I haven't seen the new film and I don't see anything in your post that warrants such a hard spoiler warning.

Rogue One has been my most enjoyed SW experience this decade.

I wont be seeing it until later tonight but Rogue One has been my most watched Disney Star wars movie. Its damn near perfect. Probably the only one I'll acknowledge until Kenobi.

I disagree, Rogue One is boring, the characters felt flat, uninteresting, and told a story that didn't need to be told. The movie was beautifully shot though!

Agree OP. Even though the characters are weak, I still think it's easily the best Star Wars movie Disney has made thus far. And the space battle is definitely better than anything in the ST.

Rogue One got lost in the editing bay. The characterization is as flat as a pancake and there was so much reshot and left out.

It's enjoyable enough but I honestly thought even Solo was better.

Agreed. While the ST has its share of highlights (and a lot more lowlights) Rogue One is the best one for being a one and done story that actually adds more weight to the original film. Just a shame about some of the bland characters but I'll take that any day over the ST's schizophrenia

As an ensemble film its completely uninterested in providing interesting characters. If they paid more attention to the basic elements of storytelling it might have been great.

I didn't enjoy Rouge One. If they spent more time developing the characters and their camaraderie, it could have made for a decent film.

I'm with you OP

Rogue one is awesome and adds something really cool to the lore.

Space battle at the end is god tier with two really neat cameos (red and gold leader)

Yes the characters are flat but it's a war story so I'll give it a pass.

Garbage movie with a terrible cast playing nobody anyone could give a fuck about. Oh and let's just wedge Vader in there because why the fuck not.

I haven't watched it in years, but iirc, my complaints were protagonist has no personal motivation for the events of the movie. She, at all times, an apparatus of her father's will, fighting for a rebellion she does not personally believe in. The antagonist has similarly no connection to Jyn other than beign the reason her father was brought in, but he honestly did it for no personal reasons and I don't even remember if he remembered that Jyn existed until the end of the movie.

But hey, how about that scene where Vader killed the dudes. He sure killed them dead, amirite?

It’s a film that tries to be serious but never reaches its potential, I honestly felt nothing when they died.

Everywhere and nowhere
People always hype up that Vader scene but it seems completely out of character. Now it's been forever but i don't remember Vader as the type of person to just go around mowing down people in the original movies. Thats what his lackeys are there for.

I liked some of the things that movie did with the rebels and underground elements of the galaxy, but the first act is really sloppy, Jyn Erso's story suffers the most for it, and it really does feel like a product of development hell.

Watched it a few days ago. It's a pretty bad movie with boring characters, uninteresting action, and a barebones plot. It gets more interesting in the 3rd act, but otherwise not particularly fun to watch.

I am still stunned Disney allowed a Star Wars movie to criticize American foreign policy, even if it was in the broadest possible strokes.

Rogue One is the only one from this SW era that I will rewatch in the future. Gilroy did good with the reshoots/new edit.

Rogue One has the best battles scenes in *any* Star Wars movie, but plot and characters are kind of a mess. TLJ is a better movie, but I'd accept RO as second place of the Disney films.

I'd rather rewatch AOTC and cringe/laugh through Anakin/Padme scenes than sit through R1 again. Only other bigger insult I can give to R1 is saying I would rather watch the PM pod race, can't say that in good conscious.

Nothing can get close to TLJ.

It's probably my least favorite Star Wars movie.

Yep. Thank you all for reminding me I'm not crazy among the garbage discourse these past few years.

Rogue One has gone up in my ratings more and more every damn time I’ve watched it. The cinematography is strong. The action is spectacular. The second act is where the film gets better, not the third, IMO. Jyn’s journey, and especially Cassian’s, hit me harder every time. I love the new spin on the Imperial theme so much.

Some of the characters are underused. Chirrut really needed to say his name more than once because I have never met a casual Star Wars fan who has known what it is. And Bodhi was done kind of dirty, because we didn’t have nearly enough of him prior to his Bor Gulloting to notice much of a difference — I’ve met a lot of people over the past three years who have thought he’s a total non-character.

But I’ve cared less and less about these issues with time. It’s an excellent movie with such a powerful ending. It hits just about every note that I think it was intended to, which is a monumental feat given all the reshoots. I love the movie.

R1 is great, but TLJ is the best movie in the franchise.

Docking points of TLJ due to JJ throwing a temper tantrum makes no sense IMO.
JJs own fault for his mystery box bullshit.

To me it’s just a big budget fan film. It’s literally some fans toy set and the complete opposite of what I go to Star Wars for. It’s the only Star Wars film that I have no interest in watching ever again.

He just force pulled an entire group's guns away, why could he just force pull the data to him?

(Yes I know that's some Cinemasins-level nitpitcking, but still....he was right there. His display of power versus the rebels still getting the data away seems kind of dissonant IMO)

I freaking loved Rogue One.
I actually think it’s the worst one as I did not care about any of those characters at all.
That's why I liked it so much, it was self-contained. Maybe I'm lazy or I have conflicting priorities, but I don't really want to watch 8 other movies to catch up with something. That's actually become a big problem for me with huge mega franchises popping up. I want things to end, dammit!

Edit: I read your comment as-in coming in with new characters and no baggage, but now I'm thinking I misinterpreted it as just flat boring characters, which I disagree with.

It’s ends in the same way as the new trilogy. No one will ever hear or care about the characters again.

As someone who doesn’t really like starwars it’s a movie with a kind of fun first act that just morphs into a really messy and uninteresting heist film

I mean sure, but that's like saying the common cold is the best disease to get.

Disney Star Wars has been a gigantic disappointment.

Paper-thin characters and weak plot saved by copious amounts of fan-service and great cinematography. The Vader scene feels like a bribe from Lucas Film to like the film because of how disconnected it is from the tone and characters of the first 2 hours

Why wasn't Jyn (just had to google her name lol) running away from Vader to give us some sort of connection to the horror of the scene. All this carnage and you walk away saying 'wow! Vader is so badass!'. Isn't he supposed to be the bad guy?

Donnie Yen's character is amazing tho.

Bad fan-service is Rey defeating Sheev with 2 lightsabers instead of 1 with the cheesiest line ever uttered in all the movies
