Hey can anyone recommend Battle Chasers Nightwar? I'm on the mood for a good ol' jrpg and this looks interesting but I don't want to waste my time if it's just ok.

It's pretty "just okay." The story and characterization are non-existent, the dungeons are procedurally generated, and it's published by THQ Nordic. The actual combat system is fun, but that's mostly all it offers.

I found to be a decent game. Not amazing, not bad. Exploration, combat and graphics are fine. Story is so-so. It's worth a playthrough.

Looking at my 3 remaining Blitz games: I won't complete any of them before February 1st, but it's not a problem. I've reached the halfway point or more in all three.

A bit late, but I've finished the second game of my blitz: Atelier Ryza, just in time for the deadline. It was okay, I guess, although I doubt I'd actually bother playing it all the way through if it wasn't for the blitz.

Its gameplay was actually a pretty big improvement over most of the series. The real-time combat made encounters much more interesting, and the overhauled crafting did a great job of making things much clearer but also more engaging. Sadly, the story and characters just did absolutely nothing for me. Not that I really loved the rest of the franchise in this regard, but Ryza was a very significant step down here.

There were also a bunch of other glaring issues, most notably when it comes to balance. Playing on the hard difficulty, the first 10% of the game was reasonably challenging. But after that, everything up to the final boss was incredibly easy. And then the final boss itself was an absolutely gigantic difficulty spike that required several hours of crafting and gear upgrades to get past. Which I don't necessarily mind, but it would be cool if the rest of the game had a similar level of challenge.

Overall though, the gameplay still manages to put it the top half of the Atelier games I've played.

Instead of playing my other blitz games, I spent the rest of the blitz time playing Final Fantasy XIV all the way to the end of Shadowbringers. And by now it's pretty much the best JRPG I've ever played. And also one of the few Japanese games I've played that actually lived up to their hype.

Everything about it is just exceptionally well made. The writing reminds me of the Trails franchise in the way it slowly and methodically builds up a believable world and cast of characters, but unlike Trails it manages to do this without turning into a generic anime high-school harem halfway through. The music and art design are both absolutely stellar, and the music in particular is incredible both in terms of quality and in terms of variety. And finally, the gameplay manages to take the best aspects of MMOs while removing the things that made me resent the genre (mostly endless grinding and the idea that you need to dedicate your entire life to get anywhere in the game). Even small things that are often overlooked shine here, such as the incredible English localization that I actually found superior to the original Japanese.

I enjoyed the game well enough right up until the last boss. I had steam rolled everything in that game and then I just could not beat the final boss, died probably 25 times before I said fuck it.

I googled it and apparently the PS4 version had a patch that buffed the final boss because it was too easy on PC. Not sure if that patch was ever applied to the PC but fuck me the boss fight was just downright unfair.

I'm glad I gave the game a chance, I had a lot of fun! I did not quite everything but almost everything in 35 hrs.

I get the feeling NG+ is where the most fun is at though, cause by the time I got to Crimson Gardens my party was kinda OP and there wasn't much challenge left. So I definitely want to run through it cause it's supposed to account for perks being unlocked so it should be much more challenging.

It seems pretty replayable, it may join my other "replay once in a while" games.

I have asked HBS developers if they were interested in developing new Shadowrun games. The answer is they would be happy to make them, but the decision is up to Microsoft which still owns the ip. I really hope Microsoft gets interested agin.

So I beat a second blitz game this past Monday: Valkyrie Profile.

It is an interesting game. I didn't really go in with any idea what it was; I was playing it on the recommendation of Luminaire in this thread because I haven't really played many of his favorite RPGs. I came away thinking it is a very distinct and charming experience.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about VP is that the world is hell and for the most part you’re just a spectator. It reminds me of the first couple hours of DQ6 writ large, but Lenneth has this mix of indifference/otherworldly values. Lenneth is collecting the dead for a conflict elsewhere. She isn't avenging them or seeing their ends through, rather she is transferring them to another life. Sure there’re all the dungeons and evil demonic forces but those don’t fully determine the depravity of the world. Which you mostly leave untouched.
And indeed the A route has Lenneth acknowledging this about herself and turning on her past behavior and her masters in order to embrace the human world.

VP has very charming presentation. None of the characters have any chill and the voice acting is great, so you'll endlessly be hearing all these extremely extra pronouncements with a religious zealot cast. It is amusing but also infectious in its charm. Moreover, the special combos are captioned "Purify Weird Soul," which is, needless to say, amazing.

I didn't really understand the battle system at first--didn't realize I could combine characters attacks together or that there was a menu to use items and select magics--but when I did figure it out, I found it quite enjoyable. It is simple but elegant.

I also found raising all the various characters to prepare them for transfer was a nice way to get the player invested in the character growth systems.

VP is a good game.

Where's the new Blitz? All that should be in the OP, if possible.

Nvm! Saw the threadmark.

Can I join this mini blitz for February?

Anyone is welcome to join the mini-blitzes if they like! We tend to have smaller, themed blitzes between the big ones. The theme currently for the month of Feb is Catchups and Callbacks - essentially finishing a game you started and never finished or replaying an old favorite. The mini-blitzes are usually any genre, hence why don't advertise 'em much here since they can be platformers, indies, horror games, etc.

Mini blitzes are shorter, so the max is 3 entries. Prizes are generally smaller too~

For season 5, we'll start figuring out the theme for the 5th/bonus game (much like how S4 had the Essentials entries) likely around the middle of Feb. The sheet should be available a week or two before season 5 starts~

I'm backing Pathfinder and Cyber Knights. And next month is Knights of the Chalice 2 Kickstarter campaign. Why must they all start their campaigns so close to each other?

Season 3 was when we did the optional 6th game, hence the larger selection overall.

Congrats to the winners and thank you everyone for participating! It's a lot of fun, as always, and we'll start Season 5 on March 1st. The sheet should be going up sometime over the weekend and we'll start narrowing down the RPG Club Theme and likely vote in the last week of February. We'll follow the same rules as last time and make the 5th slot able to be a themed entry for two points instead of one~

As a reminder, we're fairly loose on what an RPG is these days, hence why you'll see things like Monster Hunter World or Yakuza. These games have enough elements to them to have an argument of them being a hybrid. Large DLCs/expansions can count as well, but we'll detail that more in the post just before season 5~

Again, sorry for the delay~ Hopefully I didn't make any errors, but let me know if you see something off or wrong!
I'll put up a post closer to Season 5 starting.
