I have never played as a Malkavian in Vampire so I'm super excited to start as one.
Such an amazing concept, more games should do that

Is there any benefit to 9.9 over the version 10 beta?

Started Bloodlines last night and already loving it. The dialog's so endearingly campy and the mechanics seem neat. Pen and paper adaptations like this are something that I wish we got more of today.
I haven't played since like 4.6 came out (probably even earlier) so I can't tell you, sorry.
You will have to start a new game if you install a new patch though, so if you don't want to start over I think you'll be fine with 9.9

Okay i have the game installed and patched to 9.9. Might go to 10.0 now after reading up on it in the Steam Discussions. I was kind of hoping to find some better models/skins for the game, any one have any ideas? Also any one know how to implement the shaders? The Installer was kind of weird, in that it made it sound like if you don't want the extra shaders etc check the box, but I did want all the changes so I left most of the install boxes unchecked except for the main ones.

nevermind, I see all this stuff on Nexus now.

Never played Bloodlines before (just like all the other nominations because I haven't played a lot of RPGs), been reading the manual and I'm excited to get going. Thinking of going either Tremere or Ventrue.

Also kind of crazy how it's still getting unofficial patches, 10.0 came out a few days ago.

You are in for a treat, playing as a Malkavian is fantastic. For those reading this though I wouldn't recommend it for a first playthrough same with the Nosferatu.

I will be done with school the middle of next week just in time to play the game and I haven't decided on the clan but I am going to go for one of the endings i haven't done yet. I haven't played this game in years I am looking forward to playing it in between my games of Battletech and Front Mission 3.

Gothic in the bag. What a wonderful game that was, the ending was a bit... shit... but the game as a whole was really fantastic. Hopefully we do an RPG club on it some day so more folks give it a go.

Done with Shadow Hearts.
It's pretty good, but doesn't do anything amazingly well. By the end I just kind of wanted it to be over and the game isn't that long in the first place
The modern setting, horror themes and judgment ring mechanics are what make the game stand out between other JRPG's.

I will probably get the sequel soon, which is supposed to much better.
Time to get back to Divinity OS and Cosmic Star Heroine.

I got a little worn out by the Might and Magic grind in 2 so I'm taking a break and playing one of my comfort food games the original Lufia. I've never actually beaten it and I don't think I will this time either. Hopefully it keeps me busy til Dark Souls remaster's release date.

Looks like 2018 is going to be the year of CRPG's for me.
I already finished Pillars of Eternity and now I'm playing Divinity: Original Sin
After that I also want to play Tower of Time, POE2 and D:OS2.
I guess I could also play Tyranny and the shadowrun games if I still want more after that.

You should absolutely play the Shadowrun games too. Gameplay-wise I'm not a huge fan, but they have fantastic stories.

I already played Returns , which is apperently the worst one, and I own Dragonfall.
Hopefully I get to that at some point.

Mementos
Got to the point in Undertale where
The big brother skeleton explained the rules of the multi-colored square puzzle. I was like damn this is a lot of shit to remember and so I started to write down all the colors and what they did and then he said the outcome is random and KI was like fuck, I could be stuck with an impossible puzzle, but then when he pulled the switch it came out as a straight path of pink. Toby fucking pranked me.

Not sure if you even visit this thread, cj_iwakura, but how's the Eternal Punishment PSP translation patch coming along?

I feel like I could finally REALLY really try to get into IS knowing I don't have to go back to the PS1 version of EP if IS finally clicks.

I tend to fall into the camp of "I really want to like JRPGs", but I always seem to burn our before finishing one. We touched on this a few pages back where someone suggested I try Ys VIII. While I still haven't tried Ys VIII, I am about to wrap up Dragon Quest I (SNES) and I just downloaded Ys I & II Chronicles (PSP by way of PSVita). Ys I will be a bit of a "bed time/hanging out with my spouse" game, so that leaves time for another, larger game.
  • Do you think I should wait for Ys VIII on the Switch, or go for the PS4 version now? The PC version seems to be too buggy to play.
  • Wait for the latest Dragon Quest?
  • Tackle another JRPG?
I really appreciate the advice.

The PS4 version is the best version of the game, it runs extremely well. From what we've seen of the Switch version, it looks visually similar to the PS4 version but at 30 FPS rather than 60. If portability is important to you I'm sure the Switch version will be plenty playable, but if you care about getting an uncompromised experience then play on PS4.

To expand on the actual game a bit, Ys VIII is a long game with a lot of content so it's not something you will finish relatively quickly. It is very fast-paced, focus in combat is dodging or guarding at the right moments to get extra hits on the enemy and avoid damage. Gameplay consists of exploring a deserted island, light platforming, fighting tons of enemies, and a plethora of bossfights. There are some sidequests but they aren't the focus of the game, they really just amount to fetch quests, occasional escort missions, and base defense missions. You have a party of 6 characters you can switch between at will, and there is a rock paper scissors mechanic to the combat, where some enemies are weak to slashing, piercing, or blunt damage. You get two characters of each type, with different playstyles (like one blunt damage character is slow and powerful, the other is faster but less powerful. One piercing character is quick but close range, the other is slower but long range, etc.). There are lots of secrets to find, and pseudo-metroidvania aspect to the map where some areas will be blocked off unless you have enough survivors at your camp to clear the obstacle, as well as special items you obtain that let you bypass obstacles (sort of similar to Zelda, but not as involved) There is a larger focus on story compared to other Ys games, the story is nothing mind-blowing but it's fun to discover the mysteries of the island and get to know the various characters.

Imo it's one of the best Ys games.

I haven't played that Ys game yet, but I will be getting the switch version.

Dq11 is a long ways away. How about you play the nier games?

Ys 1 is great. Ys VIII is great.

I'm unsure what you mean by this exactly. Are you asking if you should keep playing DQ or wait for DQXI to avoid burnout?

I get wanting to avoid burnout, but I think you could probably get a couple DQ games in before XI if you want to.

If you choose to do so, seeing as you started with DQI, I'd suggest just continuing in release order through the original trilogy. DQII turns some people off; if that happens to you, just move on to DQIII. TBC, I like DQII myself.

DQI to III get progressively longer but all remain under 20 hours.

DQIV and V also keep to a relatively short length and should take around 20 hours, maybe 25. V is somewhat longer than IV. DQIII, IV, and V are the pinnacle of the series for a lot of folk. DQIV is my personal favorite, with V a close second.

It is when you get to DQVI that they start to get longer and especially DQVII and DQVIII.

But yeah, I'd think you could maybe get to a couple more before XI, interspersed with other games? Maybe get through the original trilogy? Maybe play IV or V (instead or in addition)?

I really appreciate the detailed synopsis. How's the difficulty level compared to something like Dark Souls or Bloodborne? I've played and beaten both of those titles, but I'm not in a place where that level of difficulty is appealing right now.

If the game's roughness, lack of polish and not particularly robust RPG elements aren't a deterrent; Automata could be a reasonable recommendation for a short-ish game - although the original game's further endings and Automata's route B aren't exactly going to help if burning out on a typical JRPG structure and repetitive tedium is a problem for them.

It depends, but unlike Souls or Bloodborne, where the difficulty is static, you can choose from a variety of difficulty settings in Ys VIII. Inferno is probably more difficult than a Souls game, but Easy and Normal are much, much less challenging than a Souls game. Ys VIII is also not nearly as punishing as those titles, you can retry from a boss fight with all your consumable items and you can save anywhere at any time.

Right on. Thank you for the advice.

WRT to NieR:Automata, I didn't realize it was an RPG. Maybe I'll have a look.

Oh neato, is it the Revisited version? That's the superior expanded re-release. But yeah from what I played it's pretty good and not sexual at all.

It's the regular version. As far as I could tell, that "Revisited" version wasn't released in Europe?

I'm reading the Pantheon - Rise of the Fallen website and can't find any mention of BARDS, what the heck?!

Edit: Nevermind, there's a subforum for Bards, so all is good.

Hey all, I'm trying to decide if BoFIII is worth playing

It's on sale in the EU atm and I'm debating playing it on Vita

Would you say the game is worth playing?

I was interested in BF3 but I looked up some videos, it doesn't really look appealing. Now BF4, that looks far better and more interesting yet it seems more people talk about 3. 4 is cheaper so I may just get it.

So I just learned Planescape Torment is available on mobile and I'd like to give it a try. This is something I've been super interested in playing ever since I joined you guys but I kinda avoid PC gaming unless it's absolutely necessary for a game I /have/ to play.

So before buying this, is the android version compromised in any significant way? Is this part of a bigger series and if so is it necessary to play anything else first?

Oct 25, 2017

No, Planescape is very much a standalone game, no need to play anything else first.

No idea how the mobile version is but there is a lot of reading in the game, so if you are planning to play it on a phone that might be uncomfortable? Depends on you though. As I said I haven't played it on mobile. It doesn't really strike me as a good mobile game but that might just be me.

Worth playing? Yea definitely. I put a decent chunk of time into it and its a fun, polished, traditional JRPG with a lot of neat touches and a great artstyle/soundtrack. Just make sure a traditional JRPG like that is what you're in the mood for though.

Depends on how much time you have to play. It's a pretty long game (took me over 80 hours).

Chiming in to say Stranger of Sword City is a pretty good, semi-tough dungeon crawler. I never played the revisited version though. It has no fanservice junk.

The penalty for character death in battle is extremely steep though. I decided to just save often and reload rather than deal with the actual game mechanic.

I bought Elminage Original when it popped up on Steam for no reason, I'll get around to it eventually.

yo breath of fire 3 is amazing
amazingggg

Really? Can you elaborate a little, it's dirt cheap but it's going to be a 40 hour commitment

I'm mostly using my Vita to play 45mins a day on my lunch break, so it's taking me months to beat games on Vita

I can't really find much on BoF3 or 4 online, other than some pretty dire YT reviews

The internet is very cynical. Its hard to judge games based on reviews, because they dont account for when these older games were made.
