Say what you will about this game's glitchiness, it's bad character facial animations, but no one can deny the music choices really nailed the mood of the game.

A combination of nostalgia, cheesiness, and classic songs is what fallout is all about, and fallout 3 nailed it.

The titular track in the original trailer set the stage:
I Don't want to set the world on fire
ytma!▶Fallout 3 - Soundtrack - "I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire" by The Ink Spots (3:05)"I Don't Want to Set the World On Fire" is a 1941 song by The Ink Spots, used in the Fallout 3 intro. It was initially going to be . . .

To the cheesy innuendo songs as you explore the wasteland:
Butcher Pete
ytma!▶Fallout 3 Soundtrack-Butcher Pete (Lyrics in Desc.) (2:31)Hey everybody, did the news get around About a guy named Butcher Pete Oh, Pete just flew into this town And he's choppin' up al . . .

To the classic songs that just put you in that time period:
Anything Goes
ytma!▶Cole Porter - Anything Goes (3:11)This is a song from the game Fallout 3, the background is pretty basic, as I am a newbie to that. The song is the thing, not th . . .

A nice mix of everything that fallout is about, I still listen to these songs today not knowing anything about their history and how popular they were, or even if they were even composed in that time period

What are your favorites? Any history to share about the music?

Personally I never really listen to the radio songs, I much prefer the ambient custom compositions, in FO3's case for example Into the Wasteland:

In Fallout 4, Rebuild, Renew:

And of course Fallout 1 and 2 are full of classic ambient songs.

Music is a huge part of why Fallout games have such distinct atmosphere and why I enjoyed even the superinferior Fallout 4 for so long.

I loved Fallout 3 radio music. That was the first time I heard Cole Porter, so liking what I heard, I digged a little bit deeper and discovered the 30s-40s American musical theatre. That was nice, since I did not live in U.S. back then and would not have discovered it otherwise.

The soundtrack itself is extremely solid. I personally enjoy Fallout 1/2 OST more, but that's not really a fair comparison, since Mark Morgan's music is just so radically different from anything that it almost does not feel like a music. Plus it probably has a greater nostalgia factor for me (though Fallout 3 is like 10 years old now, so it gets a lot of nostalgia points too). New Vegas had a lot of music from older Fallout games -- and it fit with the newer themes quite naturally.

I'm with Paul myself. I'm big on the ambient music in these games but not so much with the radio. Fallout 3 has terrific ambient themes though.

FO3 had an incredible soundtrack. Id switch back and forth between ambient and radio a lot because they were both so good.

I started w/ FO4; haven't played any in the series, but I hear good things about FO3. I've never gone backwards in an IP but might be fun!

Love walking through the wasteland while listening to the soundtrack, it gives the game a unique atmosphere, which not many other games match in my humble opinion.
