It would still be a giant leap over V visually and in terms of the sheer increased geometry of the World.

But yeah. Keeping VI for next gen would be preferable. Missing a potential 180 million customers is just being stupid though especially after V's sales over two generations.

My guess is that they're CPU limited, and that GTA6 just won't be possible on current gen hardware.

Hopefully if and when they are just waiting for the next consoles to drop and I really hope it's something cool for a setting like Tokyo or London.

They shouldn't attempt multiple cities until they can maximize the potential of one city. I want to see more accessible interiors for one. GTAV was themed around heists, yet outside of story missions, we couldn't carry any out. Let us carry out burglaries, rob casinos, banks when we want to.

In turn, I'd like to see how my actions impact the world. More police presence in areas where I raise hell the most, for example.

The wanted system should be overhauled too, current one's a bit too simplistic for my liking, and I'd like to see RDR2's bounty system implemented and expanded upon. Cops shouldn't shoot at you for minor things (unless the protagonist is AA!).

Honestly they don't need to reinvent the wheel. GTA V template, convert whatever dlc they had planned for it, add a couple of new locations and you can probably turn it around quicker than the previous game. Maybe not call it gta 6 I guess because then people might expect a huge leap. GTA:something would work.
Feels like that's very much what they're going for

Edit: if the rumours are anywhere near true

That's because they included more buildings that could be explored inside Online only which sucked

FYI any minor crime can be waived by Defusing with the police (sometimes repeatedly). The game basically doesn't teach you this or reinforce it, so everyone gets infuriated with how a minor bump on your horse causes wanted level - but it doesn't really, you just have to Defuse

Agree the system on the whole could be better though - especially in Online where it SUCKS

PS5 install base probably won't be that different to the scarlett platforms in the first year.
Plus MS would try to outbid Sony even if they were not serious just to raise the price, so the deal would probably collapse.
A marketing deal is likely but not exclusivity.

But the PS4's install in comparison to XBOX paints a different picture. We're talking about the measly sum of an extra 50 million + consoles. But you're right about MS trying to outbid for the marketing deal. But one thing that's become painfully obvious this gen is that XBOX is a division of MS and has a set budget. XBOX is in a different position entirely. They "Lost" the marketing right to the one ip that was keeping them afloat here in Europe, Fifa. And they "Lost" the marketing rights for COD. They also haven't introduced a new AAA title since 2015 (SOT) which was 3 years and 11 months ago. The backlash could be a PR disaster if at E3 they don't do anything to move the needle and then announce a GTA exclusivity of any length.

I'm not saying that this rumor is true. It's simply too insane to believe. And if it is I'll avoid the gaming web because the fallout would be cataclysmic.

But the caveats as to why it can't be true don't hold much weight especially in terms of the competition being a factor. I imagine that Take-Two is looking at Sony record year where they performed better than the PS1 like.

I kind of hope they don't go with any city that isn't Las Venturas, San Fierro, Los Santos, Vice City or Liberty City.
Any other city doesn't really have much of an image at all outside the US. Maybe New Orleans or Chicago, but still not quite there when compared to those five.

If they do, they might as well go with something outside the US (even if they won't).

Then again Vice City is long overdue, Las Venturas alone would be somewhat boring, and San Fierro was recently done in Watchdogs 2 with San Francisco. So hopefully a cool 80s Vice City? And leave Liberty City for the next large tech jump next gen like they did with GTA IV.

I see. I haven't really bothered with online, load times and the grindy aspect put me off.

Yeah, I'm aware of the defusing option. I forgot to expand on it, but I was thinking more along the lines of in RDR, your wanted level remains until you pay off the bounty, which leads to the law or bounty hunters coming after you in the areas you're wanted in. Rockstar could develop the cop AI so that they patrol their particular district and will come after you if they recognize your description depending on your appearance when committing a crime if you decide to enter that district again looking the same. Add in some "Dog the Bounty Hunter" types, plus some dirty cops in each district you can pay off to get rid of your wanted level.

Did you play Assassin's Creed Origins?

It has the absolute best bounty/wanted system. One that I think Rockstar and many other devs should ape.

Context is: two factions, each of the 25 or so territories belong to one or the other. All territories have a main town and usually a few forts. You can manipulate which faction controls a territory.

Cause shit with one faction and they chase you until they lose you. In a city that means the guards will also join in so the situation can steamroll - basically just like RDR etc.

The difference is the Mercenaries, who are free roaming "paid hunters". Commit crimes/warfare (against either faction or civilians) and you gradually accrue an increasing bounty.

To begin with it'll be "one mercenary level", just like a wanted level in GTA. But the wanted level means that increasingly hard Mercenaries (or multiple mercenaries) will come after you. Each mercenary is unique and most are procedurally generated, with various strengths and weaknesses. Rack up a level 4 bounty level and you'll get borderline unbeatable mercenaries roaming near you (you can still hide from them) or ambushing you when you least expect it.

But the really clever thing? You can pay off the bounty, ala RDR2 (and a lovely bit of QoL is that you can do it from anywhere, e.g. the map). OR you can find the person who put the bounty on your head. They'll be in a fortified camp/fort (on your map as a red bag of gold). Find them, kill them, and you'll knock down the "bounty level". You might need to take a couple of bounty funders to get to 0.

So this means you have a GAMEPLAY solution to killing your bounty, as well as a financial one - and if you don't handle your bounty there's a gameplay penalty (the game definitely times Mercenary attacks to be JUST as you're about to kill a key target or something). You can solve your bounty by truly being an assassin or you can pay your way through - unlike in RDR2 where your only solution is to pay, and it's easy to rack up an unaffordable bounty

The rumour says its next gen exclusive.
Also ms could outbid even if they didn't have the funds in order to prevent ps exclusivity.

Rockstar still has a promise of an exclusive called Agent if that game isn't going to come which won't they can do a 1 month exclusive.
Also not sure what kind of contract both companies signed with the agent exclusivity.

Past deals (that are most likely dead) are not guaranteed to effect new and different deals.

No, I'm well behind in the AC series, still on Brotherhood!

That does sound like a good system. Whilst Rockstar are trend-setters in open-world games, they're also pretty observant of rival games, so hopefully they'll pick up on this.

Multiple cities would be amazing. If RDR2 took 7-8 years and GTA V took 5-6 years then I don't expect the next GTA for 2-3 more years. As amazing as I am sure it will be I cannot get hyped over it yet.

I should buy GTAV. I remember playing the series on PS2 and not enjoying it. Way too violent for no reason whatsoever.

If violence is your issue with the GTA series overall, then you should honestly avoid GTA V at all costs.
I just don't see the point in doing a gun massacre in the streets for example. But apparently that's what so fun about GTA. >.<

I don't mind violence if it's justified like in Godfather, Assassin's Creed etc.

I remember a time when Rockstar used to make Midnight Club, Bully, Table Tennis and Manhunt as well. Now it seems they are just a 1 IP machine with maybe 1 other thrown in from time to time. Reminds me of Activision but I guess at the end of the day it's mostly about profits.
