Russian islands declare emergency after mass invasion of polar bears

Russian environmental authorities have deployed a team of specialists to a remote Arctic region to sedate and remove dozens of hungry polar bears that have besieged the people living there.

The move came after officials in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, with a population of about 3,000 people, appealed for help.

"There's never been such a mass invasion of polar bears," said Zhigansha Musin, the head of the local administration. "They have literally been chasing people."

Russia classes polar bears as an endangered species and shooting them is prohibited by law. Officials warn, however, that a cull may be necessary to ensure the safety of the local population, if attempts to remove the animals fail.

Arent polar bears solitary animals? Its weird to see so many in one place. Hope the situation can be resolved without a cull.

I presume this is down to changes in the climate reducing their normal habitats / sea ice forcing the populations inland towards human settlements. :/

They can't hunt seals as long as before since the ice platforms that they usually use are melting so much faster now.

Good that they'll try to sedate them first, but I really can't blame them if they need to kill them if sedating doesn't work. Polar bears are not something you want wandering around a populated area.

I mean, sedation sounds good and all, but they are going to sedate them and do what...? Bring them back to where they came from? It is a fair bet they left there for a reason, either they come back or die.

reminds me of that iffy story from a couple years ago of massive wolf packs terrorizing villages in Siberia, eating people's horses and dogs. IIRC some claimed there were hundreds of wolves in a pack... imagine living in a tiny village in the middle of Siberian wilderness and having hundreds of wolves attack your village and tear all your animals to shreds, maybe in the middle of the night. jesus...

it was probably bullshit but who knows!

this is going to be the start of the full end of the polar bear.

Many species are going to end up this way as global warming and melting takes place. Species are going to move inwards towards societies, become congested and then slowly killed off till we are basically left with a few volant species and fish..........to then eventually nothing

Yeah, people are treating things like the Paris agreement as radical when most estimates tell us we need to do twice that, if not more.

And that's assuming, as the IPCC does, that carbon capture technology is gonna get a hundred times better than it is now.
