Developer: Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios

Release Date: January 16th, 2020 (Japan)
Platforms: PS4
Price: ~ 9700 Yen

In the year 2001, Ichiban Kasuga, a member of the Tojo Clan's Arakawa Family, is asked by his patriarch Masumi Arakawa to go to prison for a murder committed by someone else. Thinking that this will make him a Tojo Clan hero, Ichiban gleefully accepts. Eighteen years later however in 2019, he emerges from prison to find that nobody remembers him.

Ichiban goes to confront Arakawa, who tells him to die for him and shoots him in the chest with a Makarov pistol. Days later, Ichiban wakes up half-naked under a pile of trash, having had his gunshot wound crudely stitched up. He asks a man where he is, to which the man, Namba, replies that he is in the Yokohama district of Isezaki Ijincho.

A: Oh yes.

Q: Majima?!
A: See for yourself :)

Q: I can't speak any japanese or read it at all. When is the worldwide release date?

Played about 2 hours so far I think and I am still at the begining of the game and not yet in Yokohama, but the story scenes so far have been amazing. A great mix of "Fuck Ichi is delusional af" and "Noo stop hitting that locker T__T". Graphics look good and framerate feels better than past entries this generation. I also really like the new battle system already even though I haven't had much of chance to test things out because it is still the beginng, but the timed blocking and where you stand around and how and when to use attacks has certainly some strategy behind it.

That locker scene (heck, all of Arakawa's flashbacks) paint his past life as rather tortured (the opening scene with the play was fucking fantastic). He's easily shot up to my favourite character in the series up there with the likes of Ryuuji and Nishiki. I really hope they stick the landing for him, he's fantastic.

Ichi is a real loveable goofball. He kinda reminds me of Kiryu like he has his own code, but he's a bloody idiot at the same time and a terrible Yakuza at that. The game also has a really good sense of humor so far going by the first two chapters - Him and Adachi bounce off of each other nicely, especially some more light hearted scenes like with his haircut.
I mentioned in the main Yakuza thread but the post time skip stuff in chapter 2 is pretty damn great and a nice contrast to Kiryu in Yakuza 1 - the two of them get a letter from their "father" figure however while Kiryu is kinda greeted with open arms the second he smacks some sense into Yuya, Ichi quickly realises just how alone he is. Also, its so cool that despite the fact that most of the game takes place in the new Ijincho map that our tutorial/prologue takes place in a fully explorable Kamurocho, that asset reuse putting in work! I spent a good amount of time just window shopping, looking at the pretty lights and playing around with the combat.

Graphically the game looks great. But all DE games do really. But this one looks sharper - like someone added an extra layer of detail (or at least some AA) as it looks better than 6 and Kiwami 2 at least, and not any as much pop in as JE had. Speaking of JE - post time skip has several places in the game world you'll recognise from that game. Asset reuse I know, but can I get a Kaito guest star pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease? Oh, and daylight Kamurocho definitely looks better lighting wise. It looked bland in 6 but in this game it looks way better, which is nice. Hope we get a couple of sunset moments like in JE.

Gameplay though is the biggest change, and I guess the first boss illustrated best on just how quick the combat can be. Its a fast paced back and fourth, which is really nice. Attack, counter, attack, counter etc. and the boss has a few nice dynamic moments and is actually handled better than I expected. Not quite Kuze, but better than Shimano 1 in Kiwami 1 that's for sure! And bearing in mind this is before you even get all the classes etc. (that's a chapter 4 thing) so the game is basically still in its opening at the moment.

So yeah, very early so far but I'm loving it. It feels different and yet the same to past Yakuza games. I know some people will still hate the combat no matter what, but its still this high quality release that RGGS are known for.

Does the random battles go quickly as Persona 5?
Feels faster to be honest. Granted its been a while since I finished P5 but there really doesn't feel like there's much down time between attacks especially what with you having some control when the enemy attacks. That and you can slap hotkeys to the dpad for good attacks to make things go quicker. Oh, and the combat rewards you for speed as when fighting enemies and you knock one down, you can use another character to attack the same character (whos on the ground) for more damage than if they were on their feet. So the game really pushes a fast paced feel to the combat. Yet also tactical selection of enemies as their position can mean either another enemy blocks the one you want to attack (they'll hit you if you try to run by them, so don't do that) or if an obstacle (item like bike) blocks your path to the enemy you'll automatically kick it into the enemy, and of course grab any item near the enemy (if there is one) for bigger damage. It works incredibly well in practice, and looks/feels super satisfying.

Loving it so far. Feels like a breath of fresh air. Really hope the Japanese fan base come around to it. This could be their best game yet

Random battles are just like the others. You can avoid them if you watch the map.

Thanks for all the impressions! I have been hoping they nailed the turn-based combat and it sounds like it's fun so I'm happy.

I really, really want to see how the story of this game evolves.

I did RGG 6 and Judge Eyes in Japanese but for some reason I don't feel it this time so I'm waiting for the English localization.
I hope to avoid spoilers for the main story beats as much as possible.

I'm on chapter 2, and having a great time with it. Looking forward to getting into the meat of the game, when jobs unlock and I have more people in my party. The demo was so fantastic, and I'm keen to get there.

Going to be in and out of this thread. (I shouldn't do this to myself!)

Thanks for the OT and also for the impressions coming in. I'm excited to hear about this new Yakuza.

Any new or interesting arcade games this time around?
Nope. They mainly focused on new side content away from the usual mini games which originally I was kinda down on but as more side content was revealed, the more I was excited as its quite different to what past games got. Mini game wise its a mix of 6 and Kiwami 2, with legacy stuff like the 80s arcade games returning, along with VF2 and 5 (but not Puyo). One frustration is the tease in Club Sega in Kamuro - there's a HOTD Scarlet Dawn poster, I'd have loved to have gotten that as a mini game in this :(

I've never played 4 5 or 6. I just beat 0 and I am working my way up, replaying 1, 2, and 3. Is there an ETA on a western release? I wonder if I can beat all of this games before it comes out.

I binged on them last year. One Yakuza game per month. You will feel tha difference when going from Kiwami 2 to 3-5 to 6. But it is totally worth it.

But if you feel you are starting to grow tired in the middle, pause the binge, play other games a d then come back.

Any difficulty setting ? The demo was nice, but felt a little too easy for a very long game.

Only 1 difficulty.
I'm definitely curious to hear if it gets challenging though. I don't want an easy game.

I played until chapter 11 so far and there were definitely some actually challenging boss fights on the way, keep in mind I went from story point to story point, so I was almost certainly somewhat underleveled.

This is an RPG after all, so the difficulty will most likely depend on how much side stuff you do, as if you don't do much side content you will also be running very low on money, and thus won't be able to afford the strongest equipment.

With that said, the moment I actually did some side stuff, the game got pretty easy again.

The game is short then doing only story quests? I prefer that.
I saw a video and the awful chase missions are still there. Do people really like this?

This will be a big deal for me then, because I've 100% SideStory/Most mini game that are not Casino/Host/etc for every yakuza game. The story is amazing, but some of these side story were also amazing...They are the meat of the game for me.

But at same time since Yakuza 4 (except Kiwami 1) all yakuza game became way to easy even on hard/Legend mode. But if there enough complain about that i wouldn't be surprise they decide to add them in US release.

It's definitely not short, I am skipping story scenes (I am playing one playthrough with my wife and one alone, watching cutscenes with her), and I'm not done yet after 20 hours of playtime.

Shinada was a fucking king compared to Ichiban in chapter 3. Now THAT is cash poor! When getting bronze plate from under a vending machine feels like a real win!

The can collecting is a blast, pretty decent way to get some gear without spending real money (not that I have much, a huge 2,000 yen and that's it. I probably got more than that by beating a random goon in Yakuza 0...

Namba is a really good companion from what I've played so far. Seems like a cool guy. Also, Ichiban's box hiding tactics are second only to Solid Snake himself. I'm loving his personality, so different to Kiryu and its really refreshing. Also loved the brief little intro to the 3 gang power struggle in Ijincho. Looking forward to meeting all the major players. Some side stories are starting to open up as well, basically the ones from the demo, which is cool.

Cannot wait for the western release of this. I played Ishin in Japanese using the guide and it was alright.... makes everything take so much longer though and I'm sure a lot gets lost.

I'm happy to hear the positive reception so far! Really excited to play this when it gets localized. For those who are playing, can you confirm what returning songs are back in karaoke? It's my favorite RGG mini-game and I really missed it in Judgment.

I'm avoiding the full Karaoke list, I want to be surprised for the new songs but I do know Machine Gun Kiss (Adachi) and Baka Mitei (Namba) are both in. And both are excellent renditions of the song, I'd say Adachi does a better job than Kiryu does on Machine Gun Kiss (which is impressive, as it was already my favourite ever song, now even better somehow).

Good thing that I finished Yakuza 0 last week and I wanted to playing Y1 but I'm not sure if I want to skip it for 7 or not....😬

Does it makes up the entire story of series prior to 7?

Really happy to hear this. Evening shots have looked great in DE, and drop-dead gorgeous at night, but the day environments have looked flat relatively.

I've been watching a streamer that has been playing while doing a very loose English translation. Really enjoying what I've seen thus far. I like the combat a lot more than I thought I would. The little touches to Ichi's delusion being added to the enemies (like garbage can lids as shields or buckets as helmets) are just great.

Yeah, I was very happy about this as well. Granted day still doesn't look close to night in terms of graphics but that's because I love the neon and lights and all that stuff. But I definitely think they are getting there. I've only explored a small part of Ijincho though, other parts hopefully look great in the day time as well (like the park.

Speaking of night time though, seeing the big faris wheel light up in a rainbow of lights in the distance as I explore the starting area... its wonderful!

Anyway, chapter 3 down, and I gotta say while this is definitely one of the slower starts to Yakuza I think? Its also one of the best starts. Bare in mind its doing a lot to introduce an awful lot of new stuff, not so much the combat (that gets the standard number of tutorials as per usual) but rather introducing a whole new city and cast. Chapter 3 deals with Ichiban's super poverty status and introduces Namba (my new best friend), Bleach Japan and the Korean Mafia as well as detailing the 3 rival factions in Ijincho briefly. So yeah, it does a lot. Namba especially is a really good, serious character to Ichiban's more carefree nature - like Adachi, its like a buddy cop movie with Ichiban the silly one, and Namba/Adachi the more grounded/serious one. They bounce off of each other really well, the best of which comes at the end of the chapter with a really good piece of dialogue shared between both characters. While I can't comment on the game as a whole this early on technically, character/plot wise its right up there with the best. Ichiban is probably my favourite thing about the game because he's just so different of a protagonist than what we've had before, especially in the main games with Kiryu - he's not so much the polar opposite (he's still got that weird noble code that Kiryu had) but they definitely injected more humor into the game, but thankfully this does not come at the cost of levity/seriousness in the story (the other party members see to that).

I didn't have much chance to explore outside of the starting area of the city because I wanted to be careful and not wander into overpowered territory just yet, so I mainly stuck to the plot, the can collecting mini game (which gets pretty intense and super fun on the hardest difficulty) and found a dingy little arcade in a backstreet (played some Fantasy Zone, reached the final area of the game, I've clearly gotten better!)

Oh, and the music rocks.

Thanks for posting this. I'll have a watch as I need to smooth over a few plot points here and there.

I absolutely love Ichiban, that was my greatest fear. He's adorable, at least my version, since i play the kind one. He indeed is a goof when he can, but when comes the time to take things seriously, he does. His smooth delivery when trying to comfort sad people makes me think of Kiryuchan.

The mates have good chemistry so far, there's additional dialog available through a button press at certain points when you are walking your way, but not enough for my liking so far.

Some of my favourite activities are not there... why the heck do you keep battingcenter in but leave bowling out , batting not on a field is boring as all hell T-T, golf course will obviously be out (my poor Ichi ... golfing ? yeah... no .... ), and the arcade collection is... i won't spoil but very familiar. No Project Diva or Initial D or other surprises...
Aaaand so far, no pachinko, these are all boring slots... i hate slots... the pachinkos of old were not the best ones, but at least they were trying.
Don't expect full voice over, it's still a yearly Yakuza release.
I am not sure i will like going to the formation center to be capable for future jobs... we'll see.

Cars are dangerous ! don't cross the street when a car is moving fast, you'll get heavy damage... i lost 100HP (heavy hit, i had like 130 HP total at the time).

The enemy groups are very close to each other even at low danger, and for now they don't often let me go my way when i walk maybe am i walking to fast.
There are hangouts/homebases with a spot that regenerates HP and MP for everybody, so frequent in and out are a possibility when you don't want to buy medicine, and you don't have to eat your way back to health. Leveling up recovers HP/MP, it's not a system where you just get a bump.

The combat is alright so far, there's a "Weak" status memory for what kind of attack works well with what kind of enemy, which helps not having to remember them, and you can Auto-battle with your priority given, but still retain the just-in-time button presses to keep a little active.
The one thing that makes me feel more detached than it should is that you cannot move your characters around in battle... so no moving behind bicycles if your character doesn't feel like it, which is a bummer (or i missed how to do it). It's far less visceral, far less raw... i love brawlers and i love RPGs but i love brawlers for their "tactile" experience and RPGs for their stories... so this is not 2 things in one anymore, it's just one thing, RPG (until i unlock the mandatory management game xD i am writing as of chapter 4).

Antialiasing works alright, but there's a brighter halo around edges which separates shadows from body.
You can see compromises for the console, like some lesser texture quality peppered here or there (like the administrative text explaining what happens at donki's behind the scaffolding) , not many things casting shadows, framerate, but it looks nice nonetheless overall. The starting area damp patches were very very nicely done.

I am broke, and karaoke costs 500... taxi more than 700 ???? come on... i'll walk thank you.

I was going to hold off buying this but once FF7R got delayed, I said why not and just bought it. I did enjoy the demo so that helped my decision as well I guess.

Very early in the game so far so it's a lot of cutscenes and exposition. It's understandable since we are getting a brand new protagonist. It's interesting and I love cutscenes so I am not complaining haha.

Just a minor mistake in the OP:
He asks a man where he is, to which the man, Namba, replies that he is in the Yokohama district of Isezaki Ijincho.
Isezaki Ijincho is the district in Yokohama, rather than the other way around. Wouldn't wanna break the lore or anything!

The demo was a real gem. My husband, who is fluent in Japanese and played through/translated the demo for me, didn't want to get the Japanese version. I think Yakuza humor is too weird for him- the baby substory weirded him out, haha. And I don't know much Japanese so I'll just wait for the NA release. Hopefully they can localize this quickly.
