I think that was/is a different situation, because iirc, these games were developed by SQEX. This would make Nintendo being the party that allowed SQEX working with their IPs, whereas the situation with Smash has that reversed.

The situation is definitely reversed, but I think it shows that they have a pretty close relationship. After all the DQXI on Nintendo is getting additional and orchestrated tracks. Still, you are correct that it's nothing too concrete.

About that orchestrated tracks in DQXIS ... i think it's more likely that Nintendo caved in and paid out the composer who's the root of the problem regarding DQ games' OST.

I mean sure, but that just means they could do the same for Smash. They already have 2 tracks from DQIII in Smash. I'm sure they're gonna need tracks from 11 itself.

I meant as an alt. Not for the final Smash.
............ that's what i mean...... he FIGHT with a staff.

Look at the characters hero for all the DQ games and you will realised why they pick 3-4-8-11

First of all the main character was dragon quest 11 hero The Luminary, so they had to pick another hero what look as much as him.

Dragon quest 1 : let face it, he is ugly. PASS
Dragon Quest 2 : also ugly
Dragon quest 3 : Erdrick was one of the most requested hero (probably because he looked the most like Sky from the manga? I haven't played this dragon quest so i can't say if it's good or not)
Dragon Quest 4 : is pretty popular, have a shield in his original artwork
Dragon quest 5 : fight with a staff, wont work as a "clone" of the luminary
Dragon quest 6 : kind of a bit ugly plus he doesnt have any shield for his original artwork
Dragon quest 7 : he's a fucking kid
Dragon quest 8 : while he doesn't have a shield on his artwork, he is one, if not, the most popular character especially in the west, they COULDN'T NOT put it in.
Dragon quest 10 is an mmo
And drgon quest 11 is coming for switch.

There.

I hope MS let's Banjo-Kazooie HD come to the Switch too. I can live without Rare Replay but just porting the HD versions wouldn't hurt them. Can't think anyone would be basing an xbox purchasing entirely on Banjo exclusivity.
I hope we finally get a Banjo remake. Look at that, modern Banjo (orginal, not NB style) at last:

Ahw, this post made me have warm and fuzzies. Nice to see studios work together to make games cooler.

Oh man, I love stuff like that. I wonder if there is a series out there that is universally despised that nobody would like to see return, but have it "return" anyways only to be a long con for an actual game people want.

Actually, I could see MS doing something like announcing a new Conker by starting out promoting "Clippy's paperclip adventures"

Square Enix are weird. You would think any gaming company out there would be beyond thrilled to have one of their characters considered for Smash which is as close to a pure celebration of gaming culture that we will ever get. If i were SE i'd be like "You wanna include Cloud? Here's the entire soundtrack to all of our Final Fantasy games. Take your pick. Knock yourselves out. You want any help?"

The Microsoft thing is less surprising because Phil has been saying for years that we would let them use Banjo if they wanted. If they genuinely had an issue with what is technically a competitor using their IP they would have just kept quiet about it.

It is weird to think that negotiations were easier for companies like Konami and Microsoft compared to Square, but I guess you kind of have to look at this way.

Konami is so far gone that they'll happily take the check and let Sakurai do whatever. Microsoft has nothing to lose by letting Banjo in Smash. Plus Phil Spencer is a nice enough dude to let it happen. Square-Enix is just, way, way overprotective of their IP in general.

I've always got the feeling that perhaps SE doesn't care about SSB that much and is doing the minimal effort just to get Sakurai off their back.

LOL I missed this nugget. Glad video game consumers have our priorities straight.
Go look at all the god awful sonic spinoffs, several main games, comics, cartoons and hell even the original movie design for an example of being way too uncaring about their own properties

For an example of a company im sure you like, go look at the Mario movie which isn't just an example of why Nintendo doesn't license out their properties much but is also part of the reason why they're so anal about how Mario is portrayed in game's not developed directly by Nintendo themselves

Case in point: the whole legal mess between Archie Comics and Penders. It actually ended up killing the decades old comic in the long run, or at least contributed to.

Strange times when Sakurai, Nintendo, and Microsoft can get Banjo and Kazooie into Smash without much issue while having to deal with all kinds of hoops for Cloud and Dragon Quest lol.

Yup, it's even more worth mentioning that Ken Penders was someone who IIRC even admitted he never bothered playing any of the games he was writing comics about. That right there is a grand slam example of why you need to be strict about your IP's brand because yikes, crap like that can happen and when you read some of the stuff he wanted to put into the comics like hooooly crap. That would have turned Sonic as a character into an official R rated porn star with PTSD and goddaaammmnnnnn

But yeah to get back to square: I really don't care about dragon quest so I ain't a consumer here either but it's just good business to care about your image, but in this case yeah they're seemingly being restrictive just for the sake of doing it which ain't a good reason

This isn't the first time Sakurai has mentioned third-party restrictions.

If I'm remembering right, he also said "Everyone is Here!" almost didn't happen because of one company in particular. He didn't mention names, but I think everyone assumed it was Square lol. He also said that music licensing can get pretty expensive too.

I have a feeling that Cloud wouldn't have returned if they didn't make it a priority to include every character.
It was absolutely Square-Enix, they were the only third party that literally added NOTHING to Smash Ultimate, aside from Capcom and Konami obviously getting new characters at least Namco and Sega added some new tracks and Knuckles as an AT(And then obviously Joker)

Can't really follow SQEX's stance here. It's pretty much advertising for DQ in one of the biggest game series. Maybe they don't realize because they're doing a shit job of advertising DQ games themselves?

Wouldn't be surprised if they cheap out on DQ series music too, just like they did with FF.

Why can't they be like Konami in this regard?
As a Dragon Quest stan, I can confidently say that Nintendo has done more marketing and given a bigger push for DQ in the West than Square Enix has ever done. They're so incredibly lazy and cheap. It's bananas how much Nintendo does for them.

What I took away from him comments on Banjo Kazooie was that he was well aware of the fan requests and Banjo likely did extremely well on the ballot. I imagine he had misgivings on ever including him because he was owned by Microsoft, but with Nintendo picking the DLC characters and selecting Banjo I think it surprised him just how it easy it wound up being to negotiate the character after all

Sorry for the bump, but I was thinking about how weird the official social media accounts for Dragon Quest are and this post really exemplifies what I'm thinking. And I didn't think this really warranted a whole new thread.

But WHAT IS UP with the the official Dragon Quest accounts? What's even the point? They only talk about DQ in PS4 and PC. I mean, for a lot of it, it's... fine. Stuff like their DQXI fanart or Builders 2 showcase make sense. I could understand it may be a legal thing. Like, "Nintendo and only Nintendo can mention their games." But nothing on Smash? Not even a Share or Retweet? WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?!? It just confounds me on how stupid and self sabotaging it is. I wonder if it's part of the same "rules" mentioned here our of its just SE being extraordinarily lazy. What, does each post cost them money or something?

More on topic, between a CG trailer and having actual character alts from across the series. DQ has already gotten more representing than Cloud and we don't even know what music and spirits we're getting.

Nintendo handles the publishing and promotion of Dragon Quest on Nintendo hardware outside of Japan.

Oh I'm aware that's part of it, but it seems so backwards to me that the OFFICIAL DRAGON QUEST PAGE/ACCOUNT can't comment on anything Dragon Quest outside PS4/PC. It SHOULD be all encompassing regardless of platform. It just feels like less of a legal thing and more like the weird "restrictions" Sakurai was talking about and just pure laziness/apathy.

Wut? I'd rather take a guest character with no stage and zero music than no guest character at all

We would still get a guest character just one who's company actually seems to want them in the game. If hero's representation is as bad as cloud is i would rather we get no SE reps.

Hero's representation isn't going to be as bad as Cloud's. We're getting at least double the amount of spirits Cloud brought, lol.

DQ fans should be happy that Nintendo managed to get 4 full alternate costume heroes, and maybe more than 2 songs this time. After how disappointing the FF representation is in Smash, I wasn't that convinced that we would get anything more from SE tbh, but here we are. Maybe a classic stage would be more appreciated for the fanbase, instaed of the Yggdrasil platform, but it makes sense to promote XI S this time.

About Banjo, we know that Microsoft is playing the nice, cooperative company at the moment so it's not surprising at all for me, and I'm sure we will get lots of music from the series.

It's really surprising how the Smash team can surprise us with all these crazy new characters, 4 had already the best roster from any fighting game (from any collaboration/guest fighting game I mean), when they released Ultimate it was hard to think of a better representation of videogame history... but here we are. I hope that the 2 last characters have some RE representation, at first I wanted more Nintendo characters, but now that the game is the ultimate videogame history fighting game, I hope they go all out and give us Leon or Jill.

If we do get a RE rep, it better be Jill (at least by default).

I think that multi-costumes should work, especially if they use Jill, normal (with normal I mean the non-buff version)Chris and Leon. But if I need to choose 1, it would be Re4 Leon no doubts. It has a good moveset potential and it can have a mix of Re2 Leon traditional RE moves and the crazy martial art stunts he can do in Re4.

Not that it isn't still SE's fault, but in a lot of cases I think it's less an issue of want and more of there being so many rights holders to utterly incidental things.

7 didnt get in bc he was a kid and the others because they weren't popular enough

My hypothesis is that we got IV's Hero because Sakurai wanted the female alt but was forced to do the male one.

It's perhaps worth noting that (as far as I know) Jin and Malos(or the rest of Torna) are not spirits in Smash Bros. Those character designs are owned by Tetsuya Nomura.

Why would just Jill be better than having 4 main RE characters to pick from?
Smash Ultimate, & especially the Fighters Pass, is in a bit of a dire situation when it comes to women. That plus I'm worried that they may have a generic "RE Hero" title if they go with Jill/Chris/Claire/Leon.

I'm sure they'll use the names like they do with Bowser Jr. I think they use The Hero for DQ because those characters usually don't have names. Also wouldn't having both Jill and Claire be better for women in Smash?

If one of them is the default, sure. Granted, them in the game at all is better than nothing. But at least Jill or Claire as the default would be preferred since they'd get top treatment when it comes to promotional material as well as being the one to get an Amiibo.

If Square is this hard to persuade it makes me wonder If Geno has a shot.

I'm glad MS was being supportive
