Same-sex marriage is now legally recognised in Northern Ireland.

From Monday, same-sex couples will be able to register to marry, meaning the first ceremonies will take place in February.

For couples who are already married, their marriage will now be legally recognised in Northern Ireland.

However, those who are already in a civil partnership will not be able to convert it to a marriage at this stage.
Good news! Hopefully we will see more this year. :)

Shame about anyone who currently has a civil partnership and would prefer to be married.
Yeah I'm confused what this means for people in this situation.

But overall it feels pretty good to know that people can marry those they love now, and to have my little shithole of a country be one step closer to not being a shithole.

Only took three years of no government and England deciding to take matters into their own hands just to get it passed. At least the DUP can't veto anything about it now.

Yeah, its disappointing how this came about in a way even if the result is good. But those three years of no government have caused some clear change in the political landscape based off the election results that hopefully won't lose momentum now that the gov is back

Hopefully Ian Paisley Snr turns in his grave so hard that he corkscrews out of it and we get to bury the cunt all over again.
Take a moment to remember Lyra McKee whose death at the hands of dissident Republicans helped concentrate NI minds on this issue.

Lets not kid ourselves Northern Ireland would not vote to make this legal if it was their choice, be it throughout elected officials or a referendum.

Recognition of it is gonna lag since they didn't have to go through it themselves.

Good for the people, but it highlights NI's woes as a place.
