"There are differences between Elizabeth and myself," Sanders, I-Vt., said in an interview with ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl that will air Sunday morning. "Elizabeth, I think, as you know, has said that she is a capitalist through her bones. I'm not."

The statement comes as Sanders, whose Democratic Socialist ideologies positioned him as Hillary Clinton's chief progressive rival in 2016, has found himself overtaken by Warren in the majority of national and early state surveys in recent weeks, leading to questions -- particularly in the aftermath of the heart attack he suffered last week -- about the viability of his 2020 campaign in a very crowded field.

You can watch a snippet where the quote can be found here:

Gonna be interesting to see him reconcile this comment with his book sales making him a millionaire in a single election cycle.

The word socialist scares a shit ton of people. As much as I support Bernie and want this to be a socialist country and would rather not have to support incrementalism, it's far better than Joe Fucking Biden.

But didn't Warren basically design the federal agency focused on consumer financial protection?

I actually would like to see him say that he's a Democratic Socialist loud and proud. It would be interesting if in differentiating himself like this, the journalist/interviewer followed up and asked him to say what he is so voters can get on board clearly.

I mean, yeah.

Were there clammoring to label her as a socialist that I missed somewhere?

And she said this herself, and he's repeating it.

Not sure why this is such big news, unless it's more about reminding people he's a socialist?

Correct me if I'm wrong here but Bernie isn't a hardcore socialist himself is he?

He's a Democratic Socialist but isn't that almost synonymous with Social Democracy? Which is a capitalist welfare state?

Warren more than anything exposes Bernie as the weak candidate he is. She was written off after the Native American thing, not only did she come back. She lapped the former number 2 candidate.

Seems like saying that kinda helps Warren appear more mainstream to me...

They aren't really synonymous and yes, he's a Social Democrat (like Warren), regardless of what label he self-ascribes.

Because people often claim that Sanders and Warren are basically the same.
Where specifically we talking about?

On these forums, from the party themselves, or from right wing media?

And apologies if this sounds aggressive, as it's not, but just curious as to how you're framing the "people" part of this comment so I can better understand what you mean.

What exactly does a capitalist mean in this context? If Bernie wins, is he going to spend all of his time implementing full socialism?

Think of it this way, it's such a common sentiment that it became important enough for the interviewer to ask this question to Bernie.

BTW, the media always asks this question to Bernie. It's just the first time he's actually answered it instead of dodging it.

They're practically the same. It's mainly red meat to get more leftists on his side. Neither of them are anywhere near socialist. They're both social democrats.

Yes. She could spin this as a positive and talk about how a properly regulated capitalist structure would work and push against the socialist label and the baggage it has here (though she'd still be considered dangerous for Wall Street and tech monopolists.

edit - here being the US

Socialism has become such a muddied term in America that it has lost it's actual meaning. The right has been so successful at changing the meaning of the word that even the left have adopted it's new meaning.

Watch the video in the OP
"I'm not a 'capitalist to my bones' as warren has described herself"
"He became a millionaire from selling a book. Hypocritical"
"Doesn't seem hypocritical .Him being a millionaire doesn't affect his politics, though, since he wants to raise taxes on the wealthy to increase social programs"
"And Warren doesn't?

Notice how the last one is left field and doesn't relate to the first three?

That's going to alienate most people and drive them toward Warren. I'd wager that the majority of the voting public would favor a progressive capitalist over a socialist.
