(CNN)Comedian Sarah Silverman has said she was once fired from a movie after producers found a sketch from 2007 in which she wore blackface make-up.
In an episode of her former Comedy Central show "The Sarah Silverman Program" that she has said she no longer stands by, Silverman's character dons dark face paint to see whether it is more difficult to be black or Jewish.
The episode, which was intended to examine racism from the point of view of Silverman's eponymous character, features the comedian saying: "I look like the beautiful Queen Latifah," and telling the congregation at an African-American church: "I'm black today."

Speaking to the The Bill Simmons Podcast last week, Silverman revealed: "I recently was going to do a movie ... a really sweet part and a cool little movie."

"Then at 11 p.m. the night before, they fired me because they saw that picture of me in blackface from that episode," she added. "So they hired someone else who's wonderful but who's never stuck her neck out."

Silverman, an outspoken supporter of Democratic presidential nominee Bernie Sanders and a frequent critic of President Donald Trump, nonetheless argued against "cancel culture" during the podcast.
"It's like, if you're not on board, if you say the wrong thing, if you had a tweet once ... everyone is, like, throwing the first stone," she said, dubbing the trend "righteousness porn."

"On my show, the Sarah Silverman Program, which I love, there's so much problematic from that show. I mean it's brutal," she said.

"I don't stand by the blackface sketch," she told GQ last year. "I'm horrified by it, and I can't erase it. I can only be changed by it and move on."
She added: "That was such liberal-bubble stuff, where I actually thought it was dealing with racism by using racism. I don't get joy in that anymore. It makes me feel yucky."

I never liked Sarah Silverman because of her racist edge lord humor. But it's good to see she's owning up to it.

Lock if old.

I'm ok with canceling Sarah Silverman over this shit. If we don't hold ourselves to high standards the Right will be have more credence when they screech "persecution"

Is anyone curating a list of Resetera canceled celebrities? I guess we're adding Sarah Silverman to the list, but it would be good to know who not to like so I don't inadvertently get banned.

Seems like she's not super into that sketch anymore so why `cancel` her?

There's admitting you were wrong, then there's talking shit about your replacement without a single fucking break in between the two points.

I mean, I'm fine with "cancelling" her too, but only once every single right wing comedian, politician, pundit, "journalist" and any sort of public facing person who supports or doesn't directly oppose Trump and the Republicans at every step, is cancelled first. The thing she did was racist, but it's not "put children in cages" racist, it's not "Charlottesville" racist, it's not "El Paso shooting" racist, it's not "muslim ban" racist, it's not "shithole country" racist, it's not "build the wall" racist, it's not "send her back" racist. Once every person who's ever been associated with the Repulbican party or Trump is completely gone from the public eye, then we can start on singling out people who are still at least trying to be on the right side of history.

I'm still surprised Jimmy Kimmel has managed to brush off the old Man Show sketches. Heck, I think he even interviewed Oprah on his show despite going in blackface and drag to mock her.

Edit: And don't get me wrong, I don't think he should be fired. Both he and Silverman have shown they have changed (fairly sure he's renounced those old sketches too).

It was over twelve years ago and she agrees it was stupid now, I would give her a break on this.

Unless she's still running around doing shit like that, I don't think she should have been fired.

I hope this post is sarcasm. You can like somebody who is an asshole and not be an asshole yourself. For example, when you don't know that they're an asshole...

Wait, you can get banned for liking someone some folks on here decided to 'cancel'?

The fuck? You're joking right?

Why did she say"...but who's never stuck her neck out." I don't understand how she can own up, but say it like she did something brave? Or maybe I am missing tone, and she isn't saying "stuck neck out" like a positive thing?

For real. At what point do we actually realize people make mistakes and grow from what the did 10+ years ago? Not like she has a history of being a racist clown.

I'm glad the whole "I'm going to tell this post-racist joke designed to show the absurdity of racism by being blatantly racist, and it's OK because I'm not ACTUALLY racist" thing is finally going away. Hopefully.

Era almost immediately making her point for her.

If someone is willing to own up and admit they were wrong and denounce that previous behavior, it's silly to start reaching for your cancelation pitchforks

It's literally the same joke as

Go-suck-an-egg.jpg

It also explicitly condemns the use of blackface more than either of them, across the board, as far as I've seen.

Also, it's a much, much more offensive type of black face than either of the above. The reveal had me looking away from the screen.

I'm glad the whole "I'm going to tell this post-racist joke designed to show the absurdity of racism by being blatantly racist, and it's OK because I'm not ACTUALLY racist" thing is finally going away. Hopefully.
And it definitely isn't this

Do we know when she was actually fired? For all we know it could've been soon after the sketch. So i think the firing was justified in that case.

It was old sketch that was trying to satirise racism by using blackface. She's since apologised. It's not much different than It's alway's sunny's use of blackface tbh.

"That was such liberal-bubble stuff, where I actually thought it was dealing with racism by using racism. I don't get joy in that anymore. It makes me feel yucky."

Really not worth "cancelling" over

The blackface sketch was supposed to be an exploration of racism that fell flat which now looks tone deaf by modern standards. It's a risk.

Fuck it, let's cancel "it's always sunny", RDJ, and Jon hamm too.

I used to think this shit was funny but now it's like a cringey pseudo-woke minstrel show

I hate everything to do with cancel shit, not because "cancel culture" I hate it because it creates circular conservations around total bullshit distractions. The only thing that matters is if their employer "cancels" them. Taylor Swift got cancelled, think she is still a multi millionaire releasing music.

Sarah Silverman got dropped from one film, I doubt she's blacklisted now. Especially since this has supposedly been around for a decade.

The edgy race and religious humor is kind of how she made her bones. What did the casting people think they were getting when they considered her for the role?

Does anybody think that Sarah Silverman is actually a racist? Or is this about a comedy sketch that was in poor taste? I am not sure I understand "cancel culture". (Also, I get why a corporation would fire her though, they just want to avoid anything that may affect their bottom line).

Even though she's stepping away from it rightfully, I do want to say the sketch:

a) Doesn't do the blackface in a way that portrays it as a positive thing to do. It heavily condemns it in fact.
b) Does not use it to make fun of black people features.
c) Uses the black face as a good critique of racism in America.
d) Is her acting as a character who is doing the blackface. (same thing as RDJ in Tropic Thunder)

The point of the sketch is basically that regardless of which minority you are in America, it's extremely bad for everyone, and that it's a bit silly when some minorities play the "well I'm X so it's worse for me than it is you because you're Y" rather than working together which is what they should be doing rather than trying to inter-compete.

Like legit, the sketch does more with blackface for a "good" purpose than Robert Downey Jr. does in Tropic Thunder with it or any of IASIP's use of it and yet I don't see either of those uses getting canceled. Really weird how the instant it's a minority woman people start getting the pitchforks. :/

e:

Like blackface is obviously not a very good thing to do, but I think we can also use our brains and have some nuance when it involves actors playing characters who are the ones doing the blackface for an ulterior story/point. Just like when actors play characters that are racist/bigoted, that doesn't mean the actor themselves are terrible people. And there's definitely a difference between what her sketch & what RDJ in Tropic Thunder was doing and what the play people doing blackface back in the heydey were doing in regards to race.
