Saudi girl flees her family stuck in Bangkok has her passport allegedly taken away by Saudi officials at Bangkok Airport

So this just happened an hour ago a girl by the name of Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun who claims she has a visa to Australia was transiting through Bangkok airport claims she had her passport taken away by Saudi officials at the airport and she now faces deportation back to Saudi Arabia.

She has renouced her religion and fears she will be killed if she is repatriataed back to Saudi Arabia the Thai government wants to put her back on a plane to Kuwait were she flew from, and her family is apparently waiting for her there.

This happened to another Saudi girl in the Philippines who also tried to run away from her family and she was has not been heard from since she was forced on the plane kicking and screaming.

I don't know what to say here I hope she managed to avoid deportation.

Passports are typically government property and passport passage agreements are typically between each nation or border involved. So while it's confounding and disturbing it's not necessarily illegal and may in fact be contractual - there are international laws to protect individuals but there are few international protections between you and your passport.

I don't know what the case here is. However she has a very straightforward asylum case in many nations and I know Saudi Arabia likes to claim citizens are free to live their lives, it's a ruthlessly strict theocratic kingdom and her life is in danger right now regardless of where she ends up and she's commited the secondary crime of being an adult woman trying to behave independently and is already being accused of apostasy.

I'm not ever going to respect theocratic controls over gender or democracy or give a respectful cultural mulligan to ownership of people no matter how many surahs or traditions it's wrapped in and the current government's sham theater of reform is about as honest as its crown prince is kind and selfless.

If your culture and religion can permit or mandate the possible execution or murder of your children for simply choosing to assert that they are not property then you have some soul searching to do and you were only a good parent up until the moment you were party to that. Now you're a subject first and a parent somewhere quite far down a person list.

Plenty of countries will grant entry and passage and connection to deserving individuals with legitimate fears for their safety - even from and often especially from their native governments. I'm not sure what Thai /Saudi arrangements or exceptions are.

That's terrible. Being a citizen of SA is being the prisoner of a theocratic autocracy. You have to worship and think like them or be imprisoned or cut to pieces.

Someone needs to step up and provide her with asylum. I'm hoping Canada steps up. The Saudis already hate us, and it started with us questioning their imprisonment of innocent people.

UPDATE: She has blocked her door in the hotel she was placed in and her plane left without her to Kuwait she is still in Bangkok and UN representatives are claiming Thai authorities are refusing them access to her.

Fucking world man, a girl who just want to feel safe and live a normal life without all religious bullshit and has to flee from her own country/family to do it because of the safety of her life cause she renounced her beliefs. I will never understand religion, and I never want to even try.

Hope that news is correct and that she ends up safe.

Poor girl. Please don't let her story end in tragedy. It is simply evil to send an innocent woman to her certain death just because one has to obey the rules. Can't the King of Thailand help her, he seems to be pretty chill.

If the current king is the one i'm thinking of right now ... i'd say there's a big chance he cares more about his pet dog than about what happens to the girl.

The UNHCR is likely her only chance to find some shelter, if the thai law enforcement does decide to send her back. But i'm not really well informed in these things.

Her documents were seized on Thailand soil. There should be an investigation right now opened by the thai on this

UPDATE: She has gotten her passport back and has left the airport escorted by UN officals she is now on Thai soil and has the right to apply for asylum now.
