Short summary about the EUCD:

Why is the Internet in danger?
We know the Internet as a place where we can freely flourish, express our opinions, share content and inform ourselves independently. But that could change drastically very soon!

Upload filters are supposed to block everything we share on platforms when a copyright might be violated. However, error-prone filters that offer the possibility of manipulation are not the solution. We need a new copyright. Some of the articles in the directive that has been drafted make major cuts to the freedom of the Internet. Freedom of information and freedom of expression are particularly at risk. Articles 11 and 13 in particular pose a major risk.

Article 11
The so-called ancillary copyright law requires that all pages referring to press articles must first conclude license agreements with all authors in order to receive the usual preview of a link. All others may show only the pure left. Already the heading is to be appreciated and remunerated as creative achievement of the authors. This, however, at the expense of the possibility for the readers to decide in advance whether they want to click on a news link or not.

Article 13
In the future, Internet platforms should assume liability for the content uploaded or shared by their users, unless the platform exhausts all possibilities to prevent the distribution of copyrighted material, User created content must already be checked for copyrighted material while being uploaded. Content for which no licenses are available should be sorted out during upload. However, the necessary upload filters are considered technically unfeasible, error-prone and a first step towards Internet censorship.

Those laws basically allow an average joe to create an image or content and as soon as it is used by someone one else, or referred to, that average joe can sue the shit out of the other person? Essentially setting up a field of mines across the whole internet?

You would need to make license agreements with everybody on the planet to be completely safe. That's the actual insanity of it.

Hope these numbers convince even more members of the European Parliament to vote against this law. So far, 126 members have pledged to vote against it.

I have written/emailed to my MEP's a few times about this and signed a couple of the petitions that there have been, the issue in the EU is that the big tech companies that need to lobby against this are the likes of Google, Facebook, Twitter etc and none of these are in the EU's good-books really.

I just wished this thing would have been handled better, but when you ignore experts and instead are having negotiations (with publishers that would incredibly benefit from this) behind closed doors, this is what happens. :/

Still hoping for the best. They absolutely need to rework this and if it passes, I hope that the European Court or an other instance can block it , because it is still violating many other rights layed out in the European Union.
