New Jimquisiton on the state of steam

Steam seems incapable of helping itself. Off the back of yet another deeply unpleasant game controversy, and with Epic Games snapping its heels, Steam needs to change but remains staunchly averse to the idea. The association between Steam and utter trash has gotten so bad that politicians are starting to take notice. Meanwhile, Epic offers a generous revenue split, actual curation, and a dramatically reduced risk of appearing next to school shooting games. It's a deal I can't blame anyone for taking. Screw Steam.

Steam needing to improve and the Epic Store being a worse option for consumers are not mutually exclusive ideas.

I mean, yes, Steam needs to improve.

The Epic Store also needs to improve. More so than steam.

I think most people would agree with steam needed better curation. I'll be interested to see how well epic does it down the line though.

Finally non-PC users have a voice to point to to validate their uninformed opinions.

THANK YOU JIM

I love how I got banned twice for criticizing Steam, even though I've been using it 10 years.

I went from Valve fanboy to not caring in recent years. Almost beta tested that terrible CSGO launch.

Yes steam isn't perfect and it has a lot ways it could improve. Hopefully it won't come to be forced upon them.

None of this excuses any anti-consumer moves by Epic Games Store.

I cant blame big publishers nor higher profile indies to take such deal either. But Jim is being a tool here when talking about the "risk of being with school shooting games" or "curation". None of the games featured on EGS are games that suffered from a lack of visibility. Instead, Jim keeps asking for curation which actually rejects legitimate devs.

And if you believe as an indie that there's no way you can be curated away, think of it this way:
- Legendary developper Treasure Ltd had to go through curation with the the cult classic Ikaruga.
- Famous shmup dev Cave has been refused on a few services.
- Multiple devs of high quality indies such as Assault Android Cactus or Cook Serve Delicious have been curated away on other service.

I think what Epic does is not the best thing for the consumers but i can not argue with Sterling's logic here. Steam urgently needs to be careful and curate themselves better.

It's amazing to me how people here can watch a 20 minute video, form their opinion on the matter and post it within a couple of minutes.

Agreed. I know the Epic Store isn't popular here (having to have your games in two different places? The HORROR!), but it's competition that's sorely needed when the main marketplace thinks that selling rape simulators is acceptable behavior.

Except Steam never sold it and rejected it once it's been applied for sale.
Check your facts.

Let's see what kind of trash is on Epics storefront in about 10 years. Can't really compare the two right now. Compare it to Steam in this same time frame and we can talk.

Not saying Steam doesn't need to get better, because they do. But Epic is the new guy in town, give them time to get bigger and greedier.

I'm not gonna defend Epic's moneyhatting for major titles, because I can't, but I totally understand the likes of Three Fields going with Epic for Dangerous Driving.

Chances are with how low budget those games are Epic have given them enough upfront to keep the studio going for at least one more project.

Hopefully DD can be their breakthrough success and a sequel can show up on all PC platforms day and date.

Steam isn't perfect, it definitely needs work and needs to be more proactive about the bullshit that gets shoveled onto it. The EGS feels like the alpha version of a digital platform. It's basically the Fortnite launcher with a store tacked on, featureless and no consumer needs met other than a place to put your credit card information.

I can understand where Jim is coming from, from from a consumer standpoint, EGS is no better than the Bethesda launcher at this point, another disaster of a digital platform, no thought or development put into it ahead of time, fully a pro-publisher outlet with no thought or desire when it comes to the customer. If it's where the PC digital platform is heading, then it's nothing but bad for PC gamers.

Curation is trash, there are a lot of games refused on GoG that were accepted on Steam, PSN et Eshop. I don't want a shop to decide who live or die.

Free entry for games allow some of them to become surprise phenomenons (Stardew Valley, Undertale...). Awful crap like Rape Day would have sunk in the depth of steam database if video games website didn't decide to promote them so much.

Steam needs to improve

But yeah, the Epic Store is not the best alternative, at least not yet

Far from it, actually

Epic store will improve since it's still pretty new and it needs to.
The point is that Steam didn't need to, but now they do.

Steam needed to improve. Why do you think Steam Direct is a thing ? Because indies complained to be left out.

Those advocating for curations are just fooling themselves if they think no good games will be left out.

How are they fine when there are multiple visual novels that has been straight out refused for having minor looking sexualised characters ?
You cant say "their rules aren't precise enough" and then say "they allow pedophilia".

I completely agree Valve made a big mistake by opening the floodgates, but let's not pretend Epic driving 'competition' or their store is actually good.

While anyone can sell their game on Steam, Epic handpicks only successful indie developers. If you are new, you are basically fucked up since Epic won't sell your game.

And ignoring that, Epic store and launcher sucks. It is amusing they posted about adding the search bar like it was a novelty. Even the Switch Eshop had one when it launched. And it seems Epic isn't interesting improving their store. They only care is moneyhatting developers and publishers instead of improving their store or developing their own games.

Finally, the 12% cut isn't good. Epic can deal with it thanks to Fortnite, but others don't have a printing money machine like Epic. This will also screw other storefronts like GMG, GOG, Humble and Fanatical.

Overall, Steam has issues and no one should deny that. It also has room for improvement. But saying EGS is good for the PC Gaming market then you are deluding yourself. What they are actively doing is screwing everything and bringing console-like practices that should never have happened in the PC Gaming space.

THQ nordic, publishers of Darksiders III and related to Koch Media (publishers of Metro Exodus) literally did an AMA on fucking 8chan, a website known for hosting child porn. Being on the EGS won't protect you from being next to a game that's at the center of a controversy.

Steam needing to improve and the Epic Store being a worse option for consumers are not mutually exclusive ideas.
I second this.

I don't actually agree with everything in here but Jim is pretty spot on about how transparent it is that certain people only now think that asset flip games should be protected as "free speech" once they started getting really homophobic.

Steam could stand to be better in regards to curating out harmful content.

On the other hand, however, Epic could stand to be better in just about every way except maybe developer/publisher's cut.

As it stands, Steam is by far the more pro-consumer of the two stores, so to see Jim to gloss over Epic's blatantly anti-consumer practices seems to go against his reputation as a consumer watchdog.

He doesn't see anything wrong with The Division 2 being removed from all stores except Epic and Ubisoft ones so there is no point arguing with him.
