I am stupid or does this PR hurt anyone else's brain ? 2 million players or 2 million copies sold through ?

Single player games are much like a commodity at this point. There are hundreds of releases each month, the experience is often, but not always, fully realized at launch. There is a certified value proposition in determining the time it took to play through all the content, the variation in the types of content experienced, and the cost to acquire the game. In evaluating commodities, it makes sense to evaluate a game in how it compares to other options because if the value proposition is poor for a game, there are so many other replacement options that it make sense to choose an experience that provides more value.

Coop experiences like SoT are far more unique in the market right now. Reviews by journalists and people in this thread that are dissapointed in the value proposition and their argued lack of content seem to imply that money would be better spent on a competing experience that offered more value; however, for cooperative MP, the amount of competing experiences is so small, there is no obvious replacement experience to substitute for a competing cooperative experience. Destiny is another example of this. The game gets a ton of grief for various systems, but it remains popular because competing Destiny experiences aren't readily available on the market.

For a more nascent gaming genre, it's possible, even likely, that the creation of a compelling cooperative gaming experience is FAR more important in judging a title's success than the amount of content, as creation of that unique experience carries more inherent risk, and is foundation for more publisher/developer reward. Many reviews of this game seem to support that the creation of the cooperative pirate experience in SoT is fun, and there is a foundation for even more compelling experiences going forward. For this genre, where there are far fewer comparable experiences, why isn't this enough? Why does a game seeking to create a new type of cooperative experience need to be judged on metrics catering to a fully developed commodity genre.

It's possible that 5-10 years in the future where this genre is more fully fleshed out with options and choices, critiques such as those levied at Sea of Thieves this week would have validity as gamers could choose richer existing experiences over what Sea of Thieves has to offer, but until those experiences exists, claiming I should play God of War over Sea of Thieves because its a better value proposition is disingenuous for those of us who aren't looking for that experience.
you suppose that the creation of a social experience and the creation of an experience where there are lots unique of things to do within that social space are somehow at odds with one another or nearly impossible to create. Or at best, that we should give Rare a pass here for their $60, very shallow game that has a good social foundation...just because it has said foundation.

No. I disagree strongly and I believe that the game will need more than 5 non-threatening enemy types to give it the kind of longevity that I think people wanted and hoped for from the game. There is no excuse for launching a full-priced game that has such limited things to do and so few ways in which to do them. There is no excuse for this game to have ZERO risk involved in virtually anything you do. The worst thing that can happen here is someone stealing your cargo. Literally nothing else matters. There is no sense of value. No sense of risk. No sense of loss. Everything just respawns. Coupled with demonstrably poor combat in all circumstances (from dumb AI to disappointing weapons to laughable PvP outside of role play), it's just a sandbox game that has no shortage of potential and a very visible inability to meet any of that potential for now. And so people will call it out.

Characterizing complaints as people wanting single-player experiences fails to understand the nature of the concerns. People want things to do with friends that are fun, dynamic, that have risk, that provide enough challenge to actually demand coordination among said friends. Things that result in a story to tell, not just about the fun you had with your friends, but the challenge that was overcome to reach it. And of course, people want the kind of customization you'd expect for a game of this sort. I would have expected no less than several hundred possible ship configurations such that it becomes unlikely that you'll ever see a ship quite like yours as you gain more gold and prestige. Things like that.

Until then, the game will remain short of what I would consider mostly main stream expectations or hopes for the product. Until it at least reaches a form that approximates that, it will be a $60 early access game.

I really don't understand how anyone in this thread topic can say anything other than 'neat' and move on. Why the fighting?

2 million players...it literally says that in the thread title.

Umm. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the OP, it's just quotes from the press release.

I don't think it's that hard to understand. It's 2 million people playing.

They have not put out sales numbers.

Just wanted to make sure

I read the OP but then read most of the thread and everyone acting like it sold 2 million copies.

And 3rd, there's also no "hard coded" quests. In those games the quests usually are: Go to a certain place, talk to a certain someone, kill that, retrieve that, escort that and so on. In sea of Thieves the quest is: Go make your own adventure! There are some "starting points" which some players can go to retrieve a pointer task, but that's completely up to you, it's perfectly possible that you act as a pirate and just still treasures from others and still have the same progression as the ones that are following the quests "scripts".
I don't know about this, putting someone in a world and telling them to do what they want without providing them ways to entertain them other than having fun with friends (varied and certainly more than in this game) doesn't sound good, how many games have actually pulled this off successfully? (Minecraft I guess is the only one?), there is also a problem with the world being bland, as in it is not worth exploring because there is nothing special to discover, maybe this will be solved in the future.

Personally I always need a carrot to follow in multiplayer games as a gamer, games like Destiny, The Division and MMOs do this greatly with constinatly getting your character better be it through gear or getting newer skills, a cosmetic only progression will be dropped by me fast, it remains to be seen how long will players be engaged with the game and if they made the right choice.

Great news - hope this keeps Rare afloat so they can actually create content for the game

The base is amazing

But one enemy type? Zombies at least? Monsters?
No other water animals?
No npc boats? Ghost ships? Treaure galleons?

So much that could improve the game

Grats. Always good to have lots of players, especially in an online only game.

Game's not for me at this point in time due to not enough content, but Rare has a good base here. They just need to provide new and continuing content and updates. Hell, No Man's Sky did it, Sea of Thieves can.

I'm really happy that SoT is this successful, but I'm not sure if we can say Rare is back just yet. Despite the success, all the negative impressions and reviews of the game have been disheartening to read. A very divisive game like this doesn't exactly scream the return of Rare to me.

I will say that it's nice to have Rare back to making "real" games after all the Kinect stuff. As others have said, they have a good base here. They just need to improve on it and capitalize on this success.

See, this right here is the ILLUSION of progression. You are getting stronger weapons and armor, and the enemies are getting stronger at an almost equivalent rate. If you play missions that match your level, chances are, you're facing the same challenge that you would at a lower level with lower difficulty. You're playing the same game and doing the same things over and over again, but "ooooh shiny new gun with awesome stats!"...... that takes the same number of shots to kill enemies scaled to a comparable level.

Sea of Thieves dispatches with all of that, which ends up being a necessity, as it creates an equal playing field for all players at all times in the PvP sense (which can happen at any time in the world).

Me, I'm fine with cosmetic progression. I've been saving up for a set of sails that I'm going to be so proud to hang once I've earned them. It's actually refreshing to not get showered with instant gratification in the form of gear every time I fart. It actually means something to buy an expensive item.

I'll admit, the system isn't for everybody - but there is absolutely no shortage of games out there that do things the way that some people complain SoT does not. Why can't it do its own thing? Why is there such desperation to make this game like every other game out there?

Yup yup. And SoT has a far larger team and budget behind it. There's no reason this game shouldn't be a considerably more robust experience in the future.

Time will tell.

Such a beautiful game. I am enjoying it's fresh take but I must say the combat needs some improvements. It feels a bit Skyrim-esque.

You realize that just means the base game is so unsatisfying to many that they'd prefer the illusion of progress to nothing at all.

You say unsatisfying to many, I say unsatisfying to people who haven't even played the game (let alone enough to say there is "not enough content") who are just parroting the same talking points over and over.

How many hours have you put in?

That's true for Destiny, but definitely not the case in the MMOs I've played, I have a near maxed character in Neverwinter and I'm now able to solo content which I was previously doing with a group of 5, it feels great to be able to do such a thing and that's not possible in SoT.

It can be whatever the developers want it to be as we have no right over the game, however, it's currently getting criticized for not having the standards expected from these games by reviewers and players.

This makes me happy for Rare and happy for Microsoft. But double for Rare. The company might be a shadow of itself, as many are with multiple exoduses and employee exits, but at its heart, Rare is still that company that makes some intriguing and often quirky games.

If only film/literary criticism was evaluated by this sort of formulaic system of checking certain boxes in compliance with industry trends. The only films that would be praised would be Marvel films, and the only books that would be praised would be those written by Dan Brown.

I've eaten my words so hard on this game.

Was bagging on it hard when the game first came out. Now I can't stop playing it.

Fanboyism is an issue when it comes to almost any first party game discussion. Even more so when said game has a mixed reception

Goes both ways. It's important to try not to take people's overboard reactions personally.

I think SoT uses UE4. Not sure if viva pinata used an older UE variation.

I'm not sure, but a quick Google shows that Viva Pinata may have been running on a custom in-house RARE engine, though Party Animals used Krome Studios own engine instead. If true, that means they replicated a similar art direction from their past games/engine on to Unreal 4. Pretty interesting nonetheless. I wonder what the main reasons were for them switching over to Unreal 4 instead of continuing to expand on and develop their in-house engine.

Sea of Thieves was prototyped on Unity. UE4 seems like an amazing engine though (no personal experience). It doesn't even have a tell-tale look like UE3 had, but allows a huge variety of styles.

From what I remember the lead concept artist for Viva Pinata is now the art director for Sea of Thieves, which explains it.

Destiny.....use to do this...it doesnt anymore.

Game has its own carrots, like things you can put on your ship, that you can buy from being the scurviest sea dog on the waters. Whether that's doing quests or setting out to attack others and attempt to steal their goods (if you can find them)

Games like this don't need direction because it gives you the freedom to do whatever you want. You see that island over there? You can sail to it.
