https://www.siliconera.com/2019/05/...-doing-better-than-expected-outside-of-japan/
https://www.famitsu.com/news/201905/10175997.html

  • When asked about the reception of the games outside of Japan, Shimomura (Sega Ages senior producer) said "the excitement of everyone abroad was higher than expected." In particular, Sega Ages Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega Ages Out Run, and Sega Ages Alex Kidd in Miracle World were cited as being especially popular in Europe.
  • Kodama (Sega Ages lead producer and director) went on to confirm this, saying people in western countries seemed to really appreciate them. Again, she noted, "… Out Run and Alex Kidd in Miracle World are so popular in Europe! I was surprised by that."
  • However, the situation in Japan is a bit different. Shimomura noted that the "sales in Japan have been more frustrating." He acknowledged that these games are part of a niche market. He also noted these titles were selling half as well as the Nintendo 3DS Sega 3D Classics line of games M2 had created for Sega.

This isn't a port beg but why do these ports/remakes seem tied to Nintendo consoles? I know the original Ages were ps2 only as well. Seems like they would do gangbusters spread around on other machines.

I would pay handsomely for that virtua racing port on pc for example

I wonder if price is holding the games back in Japan, or maybe the choices haven't really been to Japan's interest.

Maybe they should focus on Europe and USA than ... like with stuff that was never localized before .... like all of shining force 3 ;D

Keep 'em coming. I'll pretty much buy them all, and am forcing myself to wait for the US release so that those buys count for this region.

Maybe they should release Virtua Racing.

I came here to say this. Stop teasing me SEGA.

Stuff like the Arcade Archives series all seem to sell way more on Switch than on other platforms.

I guess those of us too impatient to wait and picking the games up off the JP store aren't helping enough :P

They've been doing mostly Mega Drive and SMS stuff so far, which were always second fiddle to Nintendo and NEC's hardware back then. I'm not surprised early Sega stuff is more popular globally. Let's see some Saturn titles!

Ha, I remember them saying that the Wii VC Alex Kidd releases doing surprisingly well back in the day was a big reason why Miracle World made the Sega Ages roster here. Neat to see that still pay off.

Hopefully we get Revenge of Death Adder before Sega decides to phase out the line.

M2 seem to generally focus on releasing their ports of classic games on one system at a time. Always have.

I'd agree it would be nice to see them adopt a more multiplatform approach, but at least it probably helps them to keep the quality up by just doing one system.

It might be an idea to release simultaneously worldwide and on every format Sega, just a thought.

These are mostly SMS and MD games, it shouldn't be a shock that European gamers are eating them up! I've bought a few already and will buy Virtua Racing whenever that finally comes out here.

This isn't shocking given how massively popular the Master System and Mega Drive were in Europe. That's where the nostalgia lies for them, not with Nintendo, who mismanaged that market for years.

Since the Sega Ages games are more popular outside of Japan, I wonder if Sega will port the games to other platforms. Whatever the case may be, just do more of them with M2 at the helm.

To be honest, their selection of games seems to be more for western nostalgia than others so far.
Some extremely classic choices we've already seen in multiple compilations.

Sorry for the port begging, but they really should bring the AGES games to PC. Imagine VR with workshop support.

The idea that Out Run is popular in Europe is not surprising :)

They really should have been more aware those titles would be popular in Europe.

In Japan's defense, they can pick up original hardware and copies of a lot of old games in great conditions if they really want to play old games.
Prices wont be as bad, and location might even be convenient.

It's not as hard as America, where retro game prices are really high, and nobody takes care of their stuff. Shit, in the US, a game that came out 5 years ago will already have its manual and cover missing.

Tried buying a Wii remote at gamestop a year ago, and it had boogers on it.

I go to Japan, and get pristine 90's retro games for much lower prices, and gear that looks fine. If the gear is anything less than perfect, it's seen as bad quality and heavily discounted.

With all of that said, I wouldn't be surprised if it were just a lack of interest in the market there.

The fact that Sega of japan is frustrated by the situation yet somehow surprised by the fact that they're doing well overseas really shows that they still have no idea what the hell they're doing from a business standpoint. It was Sega of America and Sega of Europe that really drove home the brand where as Sega of Japan was letting Nintendo and Sony step all over them because they refused to compete DESPITE the fact that the cards were 100% in their favor at several points of time. The fact that you're seeing this where the sales in their own home country are niche at best is telling.

I bought them all on 3DS. Mostly on sale, but bought every one.

I'm not buying worse of those games again. The 3DS versions were perfection.

Yeah some new games, Virtua Racing is at least new, I'll probably wait for the physical collections which had exclusive games on 3DS, grrrrrr
