https://gematsu.com/2018/03/sega-teases-possible-new-shining-title-announcement-sega-fes-2018

Speaking to the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu, Suzuki said, "We are doing our best to show various things we are working on with the [Shining] series at Sega Fes and such in April. After this please look forward to the enjoyable environments we have in the works between traditional games like this one [Shining Resonance Refrain], as well as titles with various other directions."

I can see this happening given the artist said he was working on a new console game around this time last year. Also would make sense for the Refrain localization so they can work Shining back into a thing.

Honestly? Whyatever.

Shining Force is dead.

This'll be Shining Fgfdgdhfdt and be some action animu game. It'll sell about 20 copies in NA, and we'll move on with our lives.

Cool, I would love to see a Shining game adaption. If done well it could be quite a cool horror game.

No point being curious or excited when they've given Shining Force the middle finger. You can keep your shitty Action RPGs, Sega.

Unless it's a Tactical/SRPG with music by Takenouchi (or maybe Sakuraba, but I'd prefer the former), I probably won't care about it.

Whatever it is, don't go all ham on Youtube uploads of the older games just to promote the new game. That was ultra disrespectful.

I...actually like how the new games look.
I mean I enjoy the older games too.
To be honest the only Shining games I didn't enjoy were the PS2 games, and not even from a presentation perspective, the gameplay and their systems just overall seemed clunky.

Tbf, I think Sega's gacha games were in the upper echelon of quality, though I no longer play any.

Shining Force was the first game that I remember ever actually beating by myself, it is the game that helped shaped my interest in video games. Those character designs were the GOAT!

I haven't cared for a Shining game in years. The last one I liked was Shining Force III 20 years ago.

Same, but with Shining Force 2. I really miss what the series once was. I wish more SRPGs would try the exploration thing.

Mods should probably spruce up the title. I damn near shat my pants thinking we were about to get "The Shining: Isolation".

They probably made more new age Shining games (Shining Hearts, Blade, Ark, Resonance, Cross, Blade Arces and Force Feather) during last generation than any other Sega franchise other than Yakuza and Sonic. Why?? Stop it.

The best case scenario would be Shining Force HD Collection, I do not think SEGA has it in them to deliver the Shining Force sequel people want. I would be up for another Shining RPG if it is decent though.

I'm just gonna wait for a spiritual successor to Shining Force III at this point. Advancing the style and themes of that game, along with expanded strategic depth (i.e. deeper battlefield camaraderie, more variety of objectives, etc), would please me so much. And it's not as hard to imagine something like Shining the Holy Ark coming out today since there's enough players familiar with blobbers like the Might & Magic games nowadays.

Why is thread so fucking negative? Not even 30 posts in, and everyone's bitching or already finalizing their opinions on the game. What happened to being naturally optimistic instead of redundantly cynical in gaming, jeez.

I myself, am curious to see how this shapes out. Don't know much about the Shining series but seeing footage of the Saturn games is really making me want to play through them someday. To the people saying "Camelot or bust", yeah it'd be neat if they could get them back, but Sega has other experienced teams like Atlus that could fill the void. I'm sure everyone felt down on a dev like Retro taking over Metroid back in the day but that turned out pretty well, so you never know.

"titles with various other directions" could mean (almost) anything with Shining nowadays lol. I honestly wonder if Shining Resonance's action-RPG style being a "traditional game" for the series is a notion that's supported domestically. Considering how disconnected the West has been from the series beyond the PS2 days and that they... kept inching towards pure action with every game since then I guess it makes sense. It would be neat if they tried a worldwide revival initiative, like with Valkyria Chronicles 4, of the original strategy style, but considering a lot of people have gripes with Tony Taka and that Camelot (which may not even be up to the task anymore) would likely play a big role in such an endeavor I doubt it's a reasonable expectation.

I dunno, I thought SitD and the old games in general hit the art style pretty well. Having revisited (and finally beat after all these years) SitD earlier this year I think the few characters in-game are still very charming and well composed visually, it's just that actual cutscenes, as good as they are, are very sparse. A remake would still be dope though; I'm not familiar with many modern dungeon crawlers in the style or even if it would sell well but there are a lot of robust improvements and additions to be had.

That's the thing, Sega has shown no indication of wanting to move away from the current art style (quite the opposite) or the...gameplay roulette of the Taka titles that covers everything but the traditional strategy from the original titles that people are looking for. It's stranger still because they randomly dropped titles like Shining Road and Shining Force Feather which scratched that itch, but they insist on the Taka series being anything but that despite that line of games being closest to the original Camelot games in terms of having some unifying consistency (art style, connecting plots between games, etc). It's hard to blame people for being unenthusiastic about Shining news given its history, even if it can be frustrating to read all the time.

For what it's worth, I think it's really neat that a legit fighting game happened with the IP because of its desire to do anything but something resembling classic strategy, so that's something.

The real Shining Force sequel is actually Valkyria Chronicles in that it was an evolution of the srpg gameplay of the original Shining games (1,2,3). I've only played one of the 'newer' shining games and that was on PS2. I recall it being repetitive and boring.

Funnily enough, they took that gameplay for some of the PSP games (Blade and Ark)...

I haven't played a Shining game since Shining in the Darkness. I never best it because I kissed finding something in one of the dungeons.

I'm buying the Shining game remake coming out for Switch, but it's been so long that I don't think I'll care if it's anything like the old game.

If you aren't familiar with Shining, are you at least familiar with Valkyria Chronicles? If so then imagine instead of getting Valkyria Chronicles 4, we got two decades of Valkyria Revolution style spinoffs. That's what Sega's done to the Shining series.

I think the only announcement I'd actually get excited over is a Shining Force 3 remaster but I don't think there's any chance it'd happen.
