If you hermit crabs don't think there's also people role playing the ritual then I don't know what to tell you about your secluded lives.

People are into what they're into. As long as it's harmless in the grand scheme who cares.

It's one of those things which can be interpreted multiple ways, and all still be fairly valid.

For instance: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...dmaids-tale-dressed-protests-across-the-world

Looked at in the sense of the Handmaid's dress being used by women in order to draw attention to women's rights across the world, yes, this is in bad taste.

But on the flip side, "Princess Leia Sexy Slave Costume" is a thing, and the basic ideas behind both the Handmaid's Tale and the Leia costume have the potential to be rather sickening, when looked at in a certain way. They're both "slave women" costumes meant to arouse a partner, and role-play a certain scenario - how far that goes (and thus whether it's all good fun or creepy/sickening) is down to the adults who are RP'ing it.

As a guy, I can definitely see the "sexy" appeal of this, but then, as a guy, to quote Xander, "looking at linoleum makes me want to have sex". so *shrugs*.

I'll be the first to say that vapidly taking the iconography from a deliberately thought provoking piece of art and turning it into some stupid merchandise to sell to the masses is missing the point of the work and is tacky as hell, but this isn't promoting rape nor is it an affront to feminism as this article implies. Disrespecting the iconography of a fictional television show is not offensive. It's like people have only now just realised that media can be used as more than just entertainment and can actually communicate real world struggles and that apparently means they're some bastion of sacredness.

Like this. Black Panther is not some sacred work of culture. It's a massive corporate product designed to make mad dollar.

People have been wearing stormtrooper costumes for 40 years now. Fucking stormtroopers - literally space nazis. Look, you can buy a Death Trooper costume for your kid. Yes, this is gross, corporate schlock that undermines the ideas presented in the art. I might consider you ignorant or tacky for wearing it. It's also super prominent and massively mainstream. You're not a racist who votes for Trump for doing so.
I guess. I do give more credit to cosplayers who want to dress up as sexy versions cuz at least they're putting their own creativity into it. Still, it just feels schlocky cuz it's too easy.

Fiddler's Green
Parody and satire have been murdered by reality.

Also, anyone wearing the costume is likely to regret it after a night of men making jokes about sexual slavery and women ripping them a new one.

I dunno... Some people love the dominant / submissive dynamic when it comes to sex and I could imagine a woman dressed like that turning that on its head if she was more the former.

This is missing the point of the source material harder than Zack Snyder's Watchmen did. Amazing.

It's Halloween, there's lots of stupid shit around for Halloween.

Just maybe don't make it "sexy" if you don't want to be counterproductive to the cause.

What cause are you being counterproductive to with a silly costume for one night of the year? Talk about being overdramatic.

The show isn't real so who cares

We're gonna get offended for fictional characters now?

If a girl like that walked in I wouldn't even think of the show to be honest, I've only seen the show a couple of times though so. It would need the creepy body covering.

That outfit looks pretty cool. What's more Halloweeny that giving an outfit an absurd twist?

I never bother with Halloween myself, but isn't the whole idea to dress up as something subversive and or horrific?

That's pretty cool, super subversive. Oppressive costumes that are intended to control & suppress women's sexuality being converted into something that embraces & reclaims sexuality for women.

Perhaps the (unintentionally?) smartest sexy version of a costume of all time?

Looks like someone took a sexy Little Red Ridinghood costume and added the head piece from a French Nun costume.

No complaints here, but I don't watch or know much about the show. Just going by the pictures.

That's a yikes from me dawg...

If the targeted consumers (women) don't buy them, they won't make them anymore. Nor would I consider anyone choosing to wear it for Halloween a creep.

I would absolutely consider anyone wearing one of these to be a huge creep.

It's like if someone decided to go around as a Sexy Jerry Sandusky.

I am for one shocked that Yandy, a company that has "sexy Native" outfits on their website for purchase would also make a sexy version of this. /s

What if it's a vampire handmaiden?

The wrong side of creepy.

Like real talk, this level of creepy is the difference between saying, "Yes, I like anime" and "Yes, my favorite anime is Boku no Pico".

If someone wore it to a party and were asked what they were dressed as, the sane response I would expect would be a long pause, an awkwardly long glance to the upper left, and then a quiet "sexy red riding hood".

What's this "some IPs deserve respect" nonsense? People are doing pornos dressed in Dora the Explorer outfits.

So should we be boycotting the show too? Honest question as I've never seen it.

No, the show is good...though it has cashed in some of it's character building in order to really lather on the sexual violence compared to the original books, much how GOT did.

But like, if you watch that show, and then you say "I wanna be a sexy THAT", you have problems.

You can be creepy.

But not THAT kind of creepy.

Be a vampire, you'll do fine.

It's probably because I don't live in the states where there's a high concentration of people probably up for that kind of future. I find the idea more silly than anything else and why I couldn't get into the show.

The amount of people who seem to be REALLY REALLY into the ideas put forth by the show is...upsetting, to say the least.

I'm still amazed people let Jordan Petersen into their places of business.

Nah, it's definitely in bad taste but it's still just a jokey costume not some statement.

I don't think it's about inherently respecting the IP, more just sexualizing a symbol of rape and oppression.

But, it's a fictional costume, while inspired by conservative attire, isn't real and really isn't a big deal to be doing a "sexy" version of it. Not gonna say you'll get the best reception, but it's a "you do you" thing.
