An effortlessly entertaining blend of humor and heart, Shazam! is a superhero movie that never forgets the genre's real power: joyous wish fulfillment. (currently 92% with 203 reviews in)

Currently 72 on Metacritic.

"Shazam!," on the other hand, is just a light, funny, grounded, engagingly unpretentious sleight-of-hand action comedy about a boy in a (super)man's body. The movie, in other words, is "Big" in tights. And it's Zachary Levi who makes that work, in much the same way that Tom Hanks did. Levi doesn't play Billy as a callow kid; quite the contrary, he's intelligent and jackknife fast.

Ultimately, Shazam! is probably a little too mature for actual children and too childish for adults, but it's serviceable enough to warrant a sequel that explores the good, clear ideas introduced in this one. Let's hope people who are the right age, or at least mindset, make that one.

Shazam! is a DC's most joyful and sweet movie since the days of Christopher Reeve's Superman, a funny yet earnest coming-of-age story about a boy who learns that, well, with great power comes great responsibility. So obviously, Shazam! doesn't reinvent the superhero movie, but it's an undeniably fun time that left me wanting more big-screen adventures with these charming characters.

Shazam! will best be appreciated by younger (and younger at heart) audiences who should respond very enthusiastically not only to the broad comedy but also emotional components involving Billy's desperate desire to be reunited with his mother and his growing attachment to his newfound family. His relationship with Freddy, which starts out frostily but eventually becomes deep friendship, also proves moving, not to mention providing the opportunity for a delicious cameo appearance by a certain familiar character in the DC universe near the film's end.

As much of a cynical "films just aren't as good as they were back in my day" old fart as I am, this film looks like a little bit of joy. I'm definitely interested in seeing it.

I'm looking forward to this. Captain Marvel (I never followed the newer version after they changed his name) has always been among my favorite Fawcett/DC characters.

Thread title hurts the real Captain Marvel's feelings OP.

Good to see Chuck's film career didn't die, looking forward to this.

That's a really strong start! The first trailer caught me off guard and I'm happy the final film seems to be good.

The title is me being cheeky, I love both Captain Marvels.

Sometimes I feel like an old curmudgeon who refuses to recognize Billy's name change.

That review that said it was too mature for children and too childish for adults is exactly what I felt when I saw the trailer.

Two captain marvels within weeks of each other. Two Brie Larson + Sam Jackson movies within weeks of each other.

Weird month.

I'm sorry, but the main character Shazam version looks and talks and behaves like Jimmy Fallon. I can't unseen that.

Familiar DC character at the end? Well, bets on Superman thinking Shazam is Kryptonian or Batman who recruits him to the Justice League all while learning about his secret identity and asking him to keep it secret.

saw the movie with my kids. i think they had their goonies moment. Movie has a great sense of adventure and is not dumbed down. Levi killed it.

I agree with Levi, but I don't honestly see the title as maliciously pitting one character over the other. How can you not mention 2 movies of previously obscure comic book characters, both of which were named Captain Marvel at some point, releasing within 30 days of each other is pretty whack?

Can Shazam beat-up Superman because he is magic?
