So are those the only 2 areas in the game or is there a 3rd one as well? I remember reading that there will be 3 major areas? Not sure though.

I believe there are three areas, Bailu Village, Choubu and Baisha - however in a recent update on KS they have renamed Baisha to Fortified Castle Area:

・Baisha area changed to Fortified Castle area. Mini-games, infiltration event, battle event, investigation and battle event have been implemented in the Fortified Castle area.

Here is a description of the areas from numerous sources and interviews on Shenmue Dojo. Baisha may contain spoilers though so I've put spoiler tags over some story details you may not want to know:

Bailu Village (白鹿村, which translates as 'White Deer') is the starting area of Shenmue III and, where the player was only able to experience just a tiny fraction of the village, was also where Shenmue II ended. The entire village will now be fully open and explorable. According to Shenhua, who lives in a hut on the very outskirts of the village, Bailu Village is home to around fifty inhabitants. Due to the village's proximity to water, players will be able to fish there. The initial quests here will start Ryo and Shenhua off on their journey. Bailu Village has been described as "a return to the more close-knit, parochial feel of Yokosuka" [50]

- Choubu (鸟舞, which translates as 'Bird Dance'), a riverside village situated on the banks of the Li River, will be the game's equivalent to Dobuita or Wan Chai, featuring numerous shops, stalls, amusements, hotels, shrines, temples, dwellings, and other buildings. Choubu resembles Kowloon in terms of its density and verticality. Choubu will contain approximately two-hundred NPCs (which is over three times that which was originally planned), one of whom is a master of Nanquan. Choubu has been described as the most Shenmue-esque location in the game [9] [17]

- Baisha (白沙, which translates as 'White Sand') is a village, notable for its numerous tulous, which is home to the Guilin branch of the Chi You Men. Baisha will see a number of new gameplay systems introduced to players, including "a siege game reminiscent of the Warring Kingdoms," which will presumably see the player defending allies from external attacks and engaging in battle with enemies attempting to gain control of the village's buildings, as well as an infiltration mission into the Chi You Men's branch (presumably on a mission to rescue Shenhua's imprisoned adoptive father).

- Niaowu (鸟屋, which translates as 'Bird House') has been described as "a more built-up, urbanised settlement than Bailu." Niaowu contains a fighting arena named the Rose Garden [50]

Thanks!
All of that sounds great. I was hoping for an area we haven't seen anything of yet.

Yeah, the third area seems like a major part of the story so it looks like it's something that has been kept pretty secret and not shown which is understandable. Hopefully it stays that way as I'm starting to feel like I've seen a lot of the first two areas, lol.

This looks absolutely gorgeous! I got my PS4 pre-order in the other day; Deluxe edition for those pre-order goodies and the season pass. I wasn't that big on the 1&2 remasters but I did ultimately enjoy my time with them (even if the last area in 2 took forever). I'm keen to help support the proper fans of the franchise so they can potentially get more Shenmue games (I did the same with Yakuza 6, also because they had awesome glasses as a pre-order, and that series has just boomed since then so.... y'all welcome ;D)

I mean, after this long wait and the game finally coming out, Shenmue fans should be trying everything they can to ensure they can get another game and close some more chapters in this story. And if the locations continue to look as gorgeous as this then it's all worth it!

Team blue skies here. Shenmue 1 and 2 had wonderful blue skies, I'm glad to see 3 following that trend perfectly.

Man, seeing Niao Sun for the first time is gonna be a moment. I remember getting goosebumps when I first watched this all those years ago:

She's probably the reason I'm most excited for 3. She was sorta hyped up after 2 had been released I remember (and before 3 became a pipe dream of existing). I'd love if we briefly get introduced to all the big bosses of the Chi You Men, though I'd imagine that might be more of a Shenmue 4 thing (if we get it)

Am I completely wrong in getting the vibe that she's going to become more of an ally towards the end of the game? I dunno, most women who meet Ryo inexplicably end up falling for him and I wouldn't be surprised if Niao is the same, as funny as that would be.

I think she is going to be a complete total bitch that by the end we will be itching our controllers to elbow assault her and the other chi you men leaders who we have yet to see in the face!!!!

The first gameplay trailer we seen this year, the guy who looks like a steroid ridden Fei Long who whooped Ryos ass is he a chi you men leader?.

Nah, he's not one of the big four leaders, I think he's just a lower member (Spaghetti would probably know for sure). So far the only leaders of the Chi You Men we've seen are Lan Di and Niao Sun. And of the ones remaining, one of the two yet to be revealed is supposed to be the big boss "Tentei" - the boss of bosses (similar I guess to Chairman "Dummy" Daigo of the Tojo Clan in Yakuza, only probably far smarter and dangerous).
I look forward to just seeing how many of them are revealed in 3 - Niao we know should be turning up (though I don't think we've seen anything of her yet) but I'd love to at least see just one scene of all four to wet our appetites for future games.

We've seen a bit of her ; ): https://www.phantomriverstone.com/2017/09/easter-egg-characters-discovered-in.html#more

Could be just a placeholder location though.

That's a really cool little Easter Egg, first time I've see that! Can't wait for her to show up for real, definitely feels like the fortified castle area is probably the setting for some sort of finale/big showdown type plot point - like the 70 man brawl in 1, or Yellow Head Building in 2.

Here's a cool translated interview from 4Gamer and Yu Suzuki. Worth reading it all.

Yu Suzki: For Shenmue III we added the ability to eat food in order to replenish Ryo's stamina. But one of my initial ideas for Shenmue III was to explore and incorporate the relationship between food and martial arts into the game.

To give an example, when practicing a certain technique, it would be preferable to eat lamb instead of pork. Or for another technique, it would be ideal to exercise while practicing the Art of Qigong.

(Translator's Note: Qigong is a heavy breathing exercise for the cultivation of both mind and spirit.)

In fact, there is a rather deep relationship between food and martial arts, and I initially set out to explore this idea in Shenmue III. But for the time being, we had to settle for "I can't run when I'm hungry." I could go on and on with these minute details. (Laughs)

4Gamer: So you were thinking about the really detailed parts of reality. Speaking of which, economics seem to be a key factor within Shenmue III but there were some details left unexplained in the trial version. Could you please elaborate more about the economics of Shenmue III

Yu Suzuki: Absolutely. Let's assume you need money to buy things in game to progress. Then there are various ways to obtain money within Shenmue III Some players may devise a way of getting money through utilizing their Kung Fu skills in the many street fights found in the game, while other players may choose a more honest means. Or another player may earn their fortune through gambling.

Even though the objective remains the same, the player will find the process for themselves and choose between each. So I like to reduce the number of tutorials and let the player find their own way, because if you dictate one method then it becomes the only method.

I think it's a rare feat to let the player discover their own path in modern day games.

4Gamer: We have time for one last question. It's only a brief one, but do you have any plans for the future post release of Shenmue III Are there any ideas you have in mind or is there a particular genre that you would be keen to explore?

Yu Suzuki: As you may already know, Shenmue III will of course not complete the saga, so if circumstances allow for it then Shenmue IV is considered to be the next step. As long as the fans remain vocal, then I will do my best to finish the rest of the saga for them in return.

Other than that, I've had a keen interest in fantasy games for quite some time and given the right opportunity, I think I would like to make one someday.

I'm also very interested in VR, but for people like me that are always demanding greater video quality, the lack of processing power hurts. At any rate, once the hardware inevitably catches up, I would be very keen to create a VR game.

It's a shame he couldn't fully flesh out the food system he wanted to try. Sounds like it would have been pretty cool and detailed. It's also nice he wants to move on to Shenmue 4 right away if fans are vocal and it does okay.

The food thing could have been super fun. I remember Yakuza 6 doing something far more simplified for the Rizap training challenges, but this being way more focused on Kung Fu would have been awesome.

And yeah, awesome interview, can't believe its so close now, still doesn't really seem real.

Would be a nice touch bringing that back, Nightfall and FREE1 tracks always make me really nostalgiac not as much as Visitor at night though.... Shenmue OST is so good.

Free 2 is great also.

I personally don't mind if music gets reused, corners have to be cut somewhere. I'm surprised at the quality of the cutscenes though, I had expected the game to utilize 2D images with text much like that Yakuza 0 game or other modern RPGs.

I'd honestly be fine with the free music being reused. I've been relistening to much of 1 and 2's soundtrack lately in prep for 3 and its definitely very nice to just have on when relaxing/exploring in the games.
And yeah, Shenmue 3 is actually quite uncompromising in certain aspects like the cutscenes or all NPCs being unique, having their own routines and Japanese AND English voice actors. I assumed they'd cut corners with NPCs due to the reduced budget but nope!

Yep I know all about Tentei, well as much as we all do I guess he's the man behind the 4 leaders, I just thought fei long wannabe might have been a possible main head since he looks like the guy on the promotional chapter art as a key character chapters 4 and 6.

I could be looking into it way too much and he's a minor character though so many questions... The games story and main characters have been kept under wraps really well.

Some interesting info in this thread from the IGN Japan article:

- Voice actor Takahiro Sakurai (who plays Cloud in the Japanese Final Fantasy VII Remake dub) returns to reprise his role of Lan Di from Shenmue 1&2.

- While there are many drinks, unfortunately there are no animations of Ryo drinking them as there were in Shenmue 1 & 2 due to development time restraints

- Ryo returns to his room at 9pm.

- After returning to their rooms Ryo and Shenhua have a conversation about the days events before going to bed. It's an interactive and branching conversion that can greatly impact the games narrative

- There are plans for several DLCs post launch, with 3 being action/story content and others being gambling/minigame related.

Also, a great write-up on the demo from Phantom River Stone, one of the best Shenmue fan sites on the net:

This guy catches every detail you could imagine. This is my favorite detail:

As the time went on (one hour in Shenmue III passes by in 4 minutes of real time), the light gradually grew dimmer and eventually fires appeared in the braziers standing around the village. And, to my delight, a short cut scene played, echoing the first two games, to mark dusk.

Only thing that bothers me is the 9pm curfew, I love exploring after dark and it feels like the game will be limiting me in that regard. 10pm would have been a nice compromise. Though I guess I'll have to see how it works in practice, its such a nice looking game at night that I'd rather not be restricted quite that much.

Everything is looking better and better. Seriously, they're hitting that Shenmue atmosphere so well! I will definitely waste time just walking around looking at every detail. It's unbelievable that we're only 2 months away from playing freaking Shenmue 3 and reading that Yu wants to move onto 4 if things go well it's even better.

I guess talking to Shenhua will take up a couple of hours of in-game time at the end of the day maybe so that explains 9pm. Maybe the days start earlier at around 6am or 7am to make up the difference. Will be interested to see how the game progresses with this change and if it lasts throughout the entire game. Might just be the first village area.

More info from the Shenmue Dojo, by way of IGN:

  • The arcade machines you bring into the harbour with the forklift are Sega's Astro City machines, which really existed in the past. However, the games themselves are new original games
  • The arcade games won't just be games like whack a mole or QTE Title but there are some actual video games in there as well.
  • Arcades in Shenmue are called "High-Tech Land", an homage to Sega because their arcades were called like that in Japan in the old days and some still are to this day.
  • In regards the telephone conversations Ryo can make, non-backers can make calls too, but backers get more variations. You can buy a telephone card for 5 yuan, and will be fully voiced with flashbacks playing from those characters while playing.
  • Takahiro Sakurai will reprise his role as the voice of Lan-Di (and Goro!) for the Japanese version of the release.
  • You can buy and drink juices from vending machines just as you could in the old games, however there will be no lifting or drinking animation.
  • Yu Suzuki thinks there are over 1500 items within the game.
  • You can examine each object that you have in your inventory, just as you could do in the old games, but you cannot zoom in.
  • There will be DLC in the future, and they will offer the player new rewards such as costumes etc.
Yu Suzuki mentioned 3 DLC he is preparing: one action-oriented, one story DLC, and one that is "like a casino".
  • There will be fishing tournaments, with prizes such as t-shirts with the face of the fishing shop owner on it.
  • There's also a stamp paper for fishing and you can get new stamps by fishing new fish at different locations, and there are many different types of fishing rods you can obtain/purchase. Some can be cheap, but others can be expensive, such as a "carbon rod".
  • The small character we have seen in previous Kickstarter Updates, as well as on the phone card is called "Choubu-chan", and there is one of these characters hidden in each of the 140+ stores in Niaowu. If you find one, you get an original card from the store, offering a collection of over 140 cards to obtain. The Choubu-can will sometimes be difficult to find, changing in size, colour etc.
  • Around 50% of the stores and shops will have items you can purchase, with prices varying on items as time goes on.
  • Shenmue 3 has a very long script, of which a huge part consists of conversations with Shenhua. Talking with Shenhua can lead to some funny situations, for example, Ryo saying something inappropriate. Just like in Shenmue II, there will be many multiple-choice questions for the player to ask Shenhua, or answer questions from her. Depending on all of the choices you make, your relationship with Shenhua will evolve in different ways. To hear every conversation, you would probably need to play the game 20-30 times.
  • The different outcomes of conversations with Shenhua are not big, but small differences so it won't affect the main story in any big way or anything. Yu Suzuki just wants you to enjoy the small differences.
  • He names the lady from the guest house as his favourite NPC, saying that she's very rough and careless, but actually has a nice heart.
  • Older characters were easier to make look realistic compared to younger people with better skin. He also says that he's added more beautiful women and kids in this game because Shenmue was always called a game with only old people.
  • Shenmue III will have its own "Magic Weather" with rain that affects Ryo's jacket, puddles that reflect the sunlight, you can see footprints on the ground, rain dripping from stones and roofs etc. The moon is also a physical object in the game that changes its shape in real time.
  • Ryo sleeps at Shenhua's house while staying in Bailu Village, in Shenhua's father's room. Her house has been faithfully recreated to what it was like in Shenmue II, while tweaking some parts to make it more interesting.
  • In Shenmue 3, Ryo gets send back to Shenhua's house or the Niaowu at 9PM. He can enjoy conversations with Shenhua until around 11.
  • A seasoned Shenmue fan would perhaps have the best fighting experience whilst playing the game on "hard" mode, and difficulty settings will not affect the story. However, the difficulty setting a player selects, will affect not just battles, but also how easy or hard it is to obtain money in game.
  • The battle system is centralised around obtaining new moves scrolls. Yu Suzuki believes that the battle system matches the story telling better.
  • Besides training, Yu Suzuki thinks that fights are more common in Shenmue 3 than the previous two titles as the story is "more dense". However, no random encounters or whatsoever.
  • As for the locations, Yu Suzuki originally planned to make Bailu a rather closed area, but it has become much bigger than he originally planned, and so has Niaowu. He believes that together they are bigger than Shenmue 2.
  • QTE works basically the same, but new variations have created for different situations, and timing isn't as severe as before. Depending on how many times you fail, it gets easier as well.
  • Tomato Convenience store is back, with the same nostalgic music, although you won't be able to hear it outside near the store this time. As an example of what they sell, Yu Suzuki mentions a travel magazine called the "Niaowu Walker".
  • The Mysterious scroll from the original game is still in Ryo's inventory, but Yu Suzuki says that players won't find out it's meaning in Shenmue 3.

Good god this game sounds incredible.

This is a very odd design choice on Yu's part. It was 11pm in the original games. That means we're only allowed to wander around at night for a couple of hours. :(

That's not enough time to get my fix of nighttime ambience.

It is a bit of a pity. But I might have read somewhere that days are slightly longer (as in, number of minutes per in game minute is more than the previous games) so maybe we'll still get a decent amount of time for night time stuff. Would be a pity though, as the screen shots shown so far at night look wonderful. But sounds like the 2 extra hours between 9-11pm are for the Shenhua catchup convos which sound cool in their own right.
