Prediction: the new controls will simply be the left stick analogue controls from Shenmue 2 on Xbox, the right stick will rotate Ryo's head to 'look' -- no free camera. My reasoning:
  • with a free swinging camera I'm sure they would have to write new camera collision
  • Ryo's movement is relative to the camera. Allowing you to rotate it freely could seriously mess with the controls, meaning they'd have to completely redo them
  • Less important, but Ryo was intended to be viewed from the back during gameplay. Who knows how dodgy things will look from other angles
I could be wrong, but the goal of this project seems to be preserving the original experience and with that in mind, I don't see them rewriting the entire camera/movement. I could be completely wrong and 'modern controls' could mean a free camera, but I think left stick for movement and right stick for 'looking' (basically tilting the camera in a direction) is adequate for these games. They honestly don't require precision while running around.

I wouldn't want it any other way, personally. Best not to tamper too much with the source material. Part of the charm of Shenmue for me is the camera system as it adds to the immersion.

I hope they'll fix the harbor bug that makes you do the forklift forever until you figure out the correct route. I got stuck on that when Shenmue first came out and just assumed I was meant to work for months like in real life.
Wait what? The routes are on a map that Mark gives you each day. What bug? I'm so confused by this post lmfao

Sometimes if I hear a dog bark FREE music will start playing in my head
LOL yes I get that too. Especially if it sounds like that dog in the distance...

If it's not a bug, then the game should at least tell you you're doing something wrong. The day just repeats forever if you don't do it the exact way. It was always described as a bug in the old walkthroughs.

And what we are getting here is essentially a remaster; messing with camera gameplay mechanics seems to be going more into remake territory, may as well build the game from the ground up from scratch, if that is the case. I'm not game developer though this is just my thinking.
Why are you guys so against the new controls including a free camera when they already said the new controls are optional? lol

I would definitely enable them, I enjoyed Shenmue 1 and 2 a lot, but it was despite the controls, not thanks to them. I despised them.

More options are always welcome. Old players can still enjoy them if they want and newer players can play a more modern aproach to it instead of feeling annoyed by them. I don't see any problem with that tbh.

do you guys think widescreen support for S1&2 would minimize the camera issues impact during battles??
Minimize? No, but I think it will alleviate some frustration from certain camera angles.

I have a hopefully helpful tip for anyone new to Shenmue.
NUOePfa.png

The Stop/Canel button during FREE Quest mode can be held down to anchor Ryo's footing and in unison with the left or right on the d-pad can realign the characters facing position to more easily rotate and direct your walking trajectory. This helps to diminish unintended movement that may occur when simply pressing left or right on the d-pad alone and moving in quarter steps.

The modern controls may address this in some way, but that is yet to be made clear.

I'm not against as long as the original camera system is preserved. I just laid out my reasoning for it not being there over a Shenmue 2 analog stick system. If it is optional, so be it. The original conversation seemed like it was only 2 options: Tank D-pad or a 360 rotational camera. I stand firm on my reasoning on why I think the Shenmue 2 analog controls are suffient though.

In regards to the post you quoted I was discussing why I think it was not happen due to the terminology of this port which is known as a remaster.

If it's not a bug, then the game should at least tell you you're doing something wrong. The day just repeats forever if you don't do it the exact way. It was always described as a bug in the old walkthroughs.

I've come across that bug a few times, but I'm not exactly sure how to trigger it, other than maybe not walking to specific areas to trigger story-related events (IIRC, not meeting Gui Zhang in front of the foreman's office, but I'm fairly certain this wasn't necessarily the only way to cause the bug and avoiding other story events could cause it too). What happened to me a few times was that the work days would progress and the forklift routes would change as normal, but then the final day and forklift route type would repeat, which would mean that it would be possible to gain the maximum amount of pay and to repeat that indefinitely until the day limit gameover occurred.

Speaking of bugs, or at least, what is likely a bug that should be fixed, I hope they increase the gains from training and fix the strange "exploit" that exists in the first game where one could master a single move in a single training session by tediously repeating that move from lower levels to higher levels and never checking the move in the move list, which permanently applied the training experience gained in the session. There were three experience levels to moves: Learning, Moderate, and Advanced. If you trained a move that was in Learning level, each rep increased the meter substantially more than if the move was in Moderate level. For example, if your basic punch was at Learning level and you started a training session earlier in the day and want to spend the entire day training just that move, you would be able to master it in around 1000 reps (or some other number) if you never checked the move list. However, if you made the mistake of checking the move list during your training session and you had done enough reps to get into Moderate level, well, now you would have to do like 2000 reps in total in order to completely master the move (lol) because you gained less experience in Moderate level, which would only make sense from a design standpoint if the move was upgraded to a new animation with faster execution, a wider hitting range, more power, more "safe", etc, but the problem was that this wasn't necessarily the case for some of the moves that actually became slower and or less safe, which also meant it would take longer to train those moves.

I'd like to see this kind of tedium improved or erased from the games, but I'm not holding my breath for such changes.

Personal reactions:
- I despise the motion blur, especially in fights.
- I despise the anti-aliasing (or at least the original quincunx AA algorithm) because it blurs the fuck out of the textures and actually makes the second game look older than it is, while simultaneously removing the AM2 look.
- I'm somewhat okay with the bloom, at least in night time segments.
- I hope there are options to disable all three of the above and or there are better implementations of all three (probably unlikely).
- 16:9 is great, but I wish it applied to scenes as well. I understand it would take more work.
- I think it's a mistake to include the English dub, because of how horrendous it is in the second game. The first game was satisfactory, even meme worthy, but the second game's dub is atrocious and I think it will hurt the game more than it helps. I think times have changed and more western gamers want Japanese dialog and english subs in these types of games (peak weebdom).
- I want to be able to fight/beat Fuku-san at any time for as long as I want (while adhering to Ine-san's curfew and gentle concern). He deserves it. Make him level up as well so that it doesn't get monotonous. Maybe Izumi levels of frustration.
- Let Ryo grow a beard and take off his t-shirt for maximum gains and profound "frontin".
- More depressing drunkards stumbling around at night for maximum realism representing a rapidly changing society and many failing to keep up.
- I want Ryo to able to pick up Mimi-chan and tell her everything is going to be alright, while being awkward and wooden as fuck about it.
- Increase prize drops from random draws (true original loot box).
- Add models from the game as capsule toys to satisfy years of getting the same fucking bouncy ball over and over again when you just want the fucking harbor crane for once in this fucking game.
- Virtua Fighter arcade, which you can play with Ryo's friends who continually express concern that he's not doing anything more important.
- Master Chen should teach Ryo more moves.
- Randomized forklift racing tracks and work routes.
- Expanded harbour area with more opportunities to fight anyone.
- More random cats and dogs leisurely strolling around the harbour phasing in and out of existence to suddenly stop Ryo's amazing crate quota speed runs.
- Even if it doesn't make sense, blackjack gambling parlours should be implemented.

Alright, I'm done.

It depends on what you want in a game. If Shenmue 1 was too slow for you, Shenmue 2 is much more action oriented.

Personally I love the slow pace of the first game over the second. And I much prefer the Japanese aesthetic over the Chinese one.

I think it is, and it'll help you ease into the third game, which picks up right as Shenmue 2 ends.

Regarding controls, I think on screen prompts would go a long way, at least in the beginning as a tutorial. Always see livestreamers jump in and get hours into the game without even realizing they can examine items.

This post by Fudoh explains in details what Dreamcast does with its video signal: https://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?p=1201520#p1201520

The actual aspect ratio of DC games is not a true 4:3. It's about ~7% narrower than 4:3. This can be considered an error or whatever, but that fact is: that's how Shenmue was designed.

Those who don't care, just carry on. I'm posting this only to prove that Dreamcast consoles displayed the game this way on typical CRT TVs of its era.

I'm attaching photos of Shenmue running on real Dreamcast hardware in 60 Hz via RCA video on a centered and unstretched 4:3 screen. Furthermore, I'm adding a scan of a UK gaming magazine from February 2000 - it shows Shenmue screens and the game has the narrower look (notice the clock dial and dartboard + the iconic lean look of Ryo, not the fat one which happens with perfect square pixels).

Xiv1082.jpg

rIYcUbX.jpg

Udp2Jqj.jpg

As you can see on the photos with Ryo's room, the game has black bars on the left and right which take about 7% of the image's horizontal size. It makes the clock dial slightly oval, but the characters and textures benefit from it by being less stretched. This is how most people played Shenmue. Emulators and this remaster use perfect square pixels and stretch the image, making everything look fatter. Whether you care or not, the game was displayed differently on real hardware back in the CRT days.

The bottom line: they're using perfect square pixels in Shenmue HD to make round objects actually round, not oval. It's considered the right thing to do, but CRT TVs didn't have pixels like digital displays do & Shenmue was designed with a leaner look for the atypical aspect ratio of Dreamcast, so now everything is looking fatter.

Hahaha, they back.

It should help. Characters do tend to attack off-screen from the left and right. The main issue is when the camera decides to sit behind Ryo, though, making it hard to see where you're attacking and allowing enemies to attack you from in front of the camera (only happens occasionally in small arenas, I've found).

The combat is an area that would benefit *greatly* from a 360 degree camera.

Apologies if this has been answered but any indications as to what the frame rate will be?

My hope is a locked 30. 60 would break the time in the game, apparently.

Dude! Did you let that shit build up inside you during those 24 hours.

Forget about the aspect ratio argument. it's not like they are stretching a 4:3 image to 21:9.

There is probably going to be some good things to talk about in the coming months, you want to be part of that I'm guessing.

It's very different, but still amazing. Hard to compare them. 1 had FREE music that changed as the story progressed, it was very atmospheric and mood changing. The music felt more like it was alive, telling the story...

The FREE music in 2 is also amazing, but it doesn't have a mind of it's own. Each area has it's own music and that's it, no changing or anything. But the music in every area creates it's own atmosphere, it's really something...
There's one exception to that, of course. It's right near the beginning of the game, the music temporarily changes as a result of a story event and changes back once that situation is resolved. Also, you forgot to mention that each area also has different music at night during Shenmue 2.

I liked Shenmue 1's music in general, except for the fact that you're stuck listening to the same FREE music during the entirety of Disc 3 and that song always gets stuck while the game is loading after the bus ride back from the harbor so you get to hear it stall and catch up each time. That was the only song I never really liked, just because you had to hear it for so long. Shenmue 2's music never got stale for me, there's so much of it (over 400 tracks in the DSF rip) and most of it is very good.

The FREE tunes in Shenmue II are almost always fantastic and extremely catchy. They suit the more bustling environments of Hong Kong. The music in Shenmue I is great as well and has one clear advantage: the Tomato convenience store music has a vocal track :P

I'm so glad other people will be able to play Shenmue without the hassle of emulators, or having to find a Dreamcast + a copy if you don't have it. I've been pestering friends, colleagues, about giving a chance to Shenmue for years and now it's going to be easy!

I'm going to say no, it's good music but it's way different in tone. It's not moody, it's very energetic and with traditional Chinese sounding instruments (understandably) instead of the mysterious synth like music from the first game.
the music in Shenmue games has been always very atmospheric

it's just that the atmosphere is different.
see how the music changes from a location to another within the game itself.

this is how i imagined it as well.
regarding the combat yes it's the only part in the game that could benefit from using a 360 rotated camera.

So much of the music in Shenmue is amazing. Shame that the official soundtracks do not have most of it. The Dreamcast rips over at the Dojo are good, but obviously of low quality.

Be nice if Sega released a 15 Disc music collection.

You don't listen to Heartbeats, with a lights down and a bottle of whisky then?
No, but that's not a half bad idea. Shenmue tracks are pretty evocative, especially if you've got memories associated with them.

The American darts rival in II, Barry Jones, has a second music track when you play him for bets of $100 and up. Even today it instils me with the feeling of panic I had when I realised he's the darts equivalent of a pool shark. He's by far the easiest opponent for smaller bets... but then he changes hands and starts throwing bullseye after bullseye...

The horror. The horror.

yes we deserve it.

hopefully with all the hype surrounding the IP lately maybe they will celebrate it's 20th anniversary next year with the complete soundtrack.

When do we think this beast is gonna be released? Hopefully not fucking November or something lol
Some retail listings have said late August or late September, but SEGA has said to ignore those dates.

Both the 19th and 20th anniversary of Shenmue and the Dreamcast respectively are happening this year, but they're December and November; and I dunno if they'll end up releasing that late in the year.

I don't think these games should be released before Shenmue 3

Any reasoning for that? Trying to sell a game to a whole new audience (every Shenmue fan from the past has probably already funded the Kickstarter and so has their copy) without letting any of them actually play the story up until now? Doesn't make much sense. 1 & 2 really aren't that bad, hardly like they're really going to destroy the Shenmue brand should they dare let people play them nowadays.

I think the nagitivity over potential modern gamer's reactions to this are totally overblown. For every person who doesn't click with it I'd guess there will be a couple who love what Shenmue is. Some of its issues were even issues back when the game came out, like poor English dubs and even the clunky tank controls (which could be fixed adequately depending on what they do). People still loved it then.

I think newer gamers will be turned off. Shenmue was one of my favorite games a while back. That game has no redeeming quality in 2018.

If they did spruce up the controls & voices I can understand. I just don't think that's happening at all.
