lol they had the engine before. It's Unreal 4. But yeah I am feeling very disappointed with the gameplay loop in this installment. The previous two games had way more fun things to distract me, and a more fleshed out world to explore.

I'm going to muddle my way through this installment but I am really hoping that Yu Suzuki and crew get a proper budget for Shenmue 4 to make it a full fledged contemporary game, but with all the fun stuff in it we have come to know and love in the first two games. Basically, like Yakuza.

Shenmue III has more activities than both Shenmue I & II...I like Yakuza also, but Yakuza has nowhere near the level of atmosphere and level of detail in the environments like Shenmue has, and Shenmue III has more in game detail on a crazy small budget.

Shenmue III is a more slow burn and smell the roses kind of game, and Yakuza is just all out action all the time, you cant walk a couple of blocks without getting caught in a random encounter.

Personally I consider Yakuza 0 one of the best games I played this generation, but I vastly preferred Shenmue III after I was finished with it. But again they are very different games that try to achieve different things, so I completely understand it's down to preference, but going into any Shenmue game high budget or not, you shouldn't go in expecting Yakuza...because that isnt what Shenmue was or is trying to be now.

Did anyone else get that conversation with one of the older ladies in Bailu where if you ask her a question you get the option to address her as "granny" or "gorgeous"? Pick the former and she clams up and refuses to speak to you, but have 18-year-old Ryo call this 70+ woman gorgeous and she acts all flattered and tells you what you need 🤣

I think it's just a quirk of the translation because the Japanese voices were saying either "onesan" or "obasan", which are much more normal than referring to a random older lady as "granny" or "gorgeous", but it still amused me.

Yeah it made me laugh aswell, I'm assuming the subs are actually for the English voice overs so you gets these slight quirks. In this context 'onesan' means young lady, so Ryo is being a charmer but he's not actually hitting on her. 😅

Not to steer into a tangent, but I started up Shenmue 1 to prep for this over the weekend. Not even certain if I would replay it and its sequel or just get a taste and move onto the new. The last time I played it was its Dreamcast release, and though I recall major moments the specifics have been largely forgotten. So after decades of being told that it doesn't hold up and that it suffers from so many issues that its barely playable/enjoyable in a modern context, I was shocked at how much I find that to be pure bullocks.

Yes, the writing can feel awkward, and yes it demands a certain level of patience and self-control to be properly engaged, but it also surprised me at how quickly I was willing to relax and commit to the mystery and its pacing. It's also been kind of surprising at how many possible clues are just 'out there' waiting to be discovered. All roads lead to the same conclusion, but I find it kind of great just how strands can exist to tug occasionally to follow leads.

Though one disadvantage is that the game can sometime auto-push you onto entirely different 'lead' routes due to unforseen reasons. For instance, I had an appointment to meet someone at the arcade at 3pm tmrw to follow a strand that I had been chasing for a few in-game days. When I woke the next morning to go to said meeting, a forced cutscene occurred that pushed me towards a new lead that is beyond whatever point in the progression that arcade meeting was at, so that entire path closed off and I was stuck on the new one. That was a bit irritating even if my other road inevitably would have led me to where I currently am. Not sure why the game felt the need to do that?

Anyway, loving the game and definitely plan to push through 1&2 first(I never did finish 2 way back on Xbox anyway).

Also, my Ryo has a Gacha addiction. I'm trying to get my revenge, but he just cannot stop wasting his daily allowance on needless capsule toys. Like WTF! Send help please!

I have Shemue 3 rented but I am wondering if I should go back and just play 1 & 2 before really getting into this. I can tell I will like it for the simple fact that it is nothing like I have ever played. I watched the story recap of 1 & 2 but I still feel like i know nothing about this series haha.

I feel like I've done everything and been everywhere in Bailu and I'm at the point in the story when I'm ready to move on but there's still a couple of scrolls in the exchange shop I don't have Items for

Leather Shoes, Boots, Zodiac Engraving, Battle Axe and shovel loader. I've no idea where you can get any of this stuff. Am I missing a shop somewhere?

With the Shovel Loader

I found one in the main story in the stonemasons house and gave it back to the kid who lost it I think

No we don't have any sales data yet. Best Buy is the only retailer discounting the game (that I know of) and it was a pre-planned part of their Black Friday discounts that were decided before the game came out. It's more of a consequence of launching so close to the holiday season.
Amazon is also selling it for $34.99 (spread the word!).

If we get the privilege of a Shenmue IV, I hope the team makes these changes:

  1. Only include an English dub if you've done everything you possibly can to ensure every other system in the game is perfected. The dub is costly and brings the game more negative attention than positive
  2. Spend more money on a better translation. The subtitles are far from perfect.
  3. If you can't make the towns more populated, make towns smaller or make the streets less wide. It's strange walking through a city that looks like a ghost town
  4. I don't personally mind the stamina system, but separate stamina from HP. It would also be a lot more fun to eat at actual restaurants than just fill my menu with fungus and black garlic. If you're going for immersion, you need to make the food system more interesting and engaging
  5. Hire a more experienced UI designer. The menus and title screens are beyond amateurish. I am having a very hard time navigating the menus with ease because they're so cluttered and hard to read. Attention to detail is so important in a game like this. I actually KIND of like the general aesthetic of the in-game menus; they make me nostalgic for the old games, but they need some serious editing
  6. Hire a more experienced cutscene or animation director. The fades are such a bummer and make some scenes almost nonsensical... Really not great to mess up key cutscenes in such a cinematic game.
  7. Spend more money on music. People love the Shenmue OST. This shouldn't be an area that's not given TLC. I would happily sacrifice Corey Marshall's voice acting for superior music direction.

I think the Arcade meeting was a hoax. I was never able to go there either.

Talking about very special people...

I just watched AvoidingThePuddle stream the game for a bit. That guy has the attention span of a goldfish - feels that he has to constantly react with the chat. Lives life by chat telling him what to do, because its more easy - roughs through fights by spending all food four times in a row instead of training. Then has nothing left for stamina. Asking the chat which way to go up to Shenhuas house, five times in a row, while hes on the path.

And he has been from and to the house twice already (the game made sure), and hes got a map, that he already has seen that would tell him.

If that is what reviewers mean by 'the game feels old' I have news for you... The game indeed might not be for you.

But then - he manages to ignore all dialogue while reading chat as well, and then reads up what to do in the journal. If the chat is slow. So - at least, if you are able to read - hey, maybe you can play this game after all...

And I've also checked in on his progress 12 hours later - still uses the same combos. And that guy is a Tekken caster.. ;) Roughs it out. Eats 4 times the food. Prays for the game to employ variable difficulty. Asks chat what to do. Heck, I'm getting too old for Twitch. ;)

For anyone playing Shenmue. Stack up on food. Please. At least a few days worth. Pro tip.

Everything you described is exactly how Aris plays every game. His main focus in the first two games was to gamble at the casinos all the time. He then quit 2 maybe 15 minutes from the ending. I love watching him play games and think he's funny, but I would never go to him for a valid opinion on a game's quality. He plays games he doesn't truly enjoy, because he loves to see the chat write in agony.

I on the other hand am loving this game way more than I thought I would. I am playing through with a friend a few hours a week, so I'm not super far in. I definitely dislike the combat and want to scream every time Ryo is surprised by information that is blatantly obvious or he was already told, but I'm having a blast still.

Shenmue 3 debuted in the 17th spot in the UK, by the way. Probably not exactly going to send Deep Silver running to fund a sequel, but we'll see.

Perhaps not so successful is the release of Shenmue III. The follow-up to the Dreamcast classics comes in at No.17. Only released on PS4, the new release sold a little more than half of last year's Shenmue I and II remaster (PS4 sales only). However, the numbers for this game have been skewed by the fact almost 70,000 gamers backed the title via Kickstarter.

I mean, debuting with only 50% (roughly) of the remasters' sales is not good, considering that was "supposed" to introduce new fans to the series (small UK fan base or not).

I believe their were 9k backers in the U.K. Most surely would have entered the top 10 in UK if it wasn't kickstarted.

Good news for what it's worth it's now sold out on Amazon US and #2 at Best Buy.
DLC sales will help this game because backers would still need to buy it to get the content.
We still have no idea on the digital sales. EGS and future steam release.
Above all there are too many variables to take into consideration to know if S3 is selling enough to get a S4.

The Black Friday discount does definitely appear to be helping in the US though. Still #2 on Best Buy's bestselling games and Amazon US currently doesn't have it in stock.

EDIT: Beaten (by 8 minutes lol, need to refresh more).

Has YsNet said anything yet about post-launch support? I know there's upcoming DLC but I'm wondering if they continue to improve and polish the game.

I think you have to pay for it.

There is a similar situation in the second location where you need 5000, so start saving lol :)

I don't think so, but that quest becomes part of learning how fortune tellers will help you earn money, so there is a bit of a twist.

Alright, thanks fellas. I actually have the money to pay for it already, it's just... screw spending that much only so some arrogant old fart can get his booze-on.

So this has been sold out all day on Amazon. That seems like fairly good news, provided they were given more than a couple hundred copies. Seems $35-39 is a great price point for this game.

It was always going to be a flop, to be honest. Let's not kid ourselves, about a 20 year sequel to a franchise that flopped in the first place. Even though I quite liked it, the middling reviews so far probably haven't helped and I think most of the fans had earned a copy already from the kickstarter.

I'll be there for another kickstarter but even then it's not going to have the hype of 2015 kickstarter which was influenced by the 'year of dreams' memes. Shenmue 3 was a charming and relaxing game and I'll visit its world again in the future, so I'm not too heart broken with this result and when for about 15 years no one thought we'd get one at all. Enjoyed all the discussion in this thread anyway and the reminiscing.
