Stamina system is only really annoying when I have to second guess when I need to heal in case a battle is coming up. Otherwise it gets less and less relevant as you train more, at this point in time I can jog around without a care in the world.

it's annoying at first because it pressures you into working. Later it's no longer about running, more like a training/fighting statmina system. You still need to take care of it.

I would hope they try to make the stamina system more interesting next time. Let Ryo go to a cafe a couple times a day instead of have him chomp on garlic all the time. All the same, an hour or so of leveling up makes running pretty much unlimited. Dunno why people keep missing that.

I think the 9PM curfew is the most annoying limitation.

Did anyone else do the same thing I just did? Didn't catch on that I had to tab over to bottles on the herb screen when it comes to selling, left it for a few (in game days) but was still picking up herbs all the time. Finally realised what I was doing wrong and just made 700+yuan selling a bunch in one go.

Put an initial couple hours into the game, then left it to finish up Fallen Order. Fully back into it now, with most of the game still ahead of me (about to head to the Panda market for the first time in search of sailors thugs), can already tell this is going to be the game that gets me through Christmas. Which is fitting really, given that Shenmue is, and always has been, a Christmas game!

I 100% loved the stamina system, as well as the money system. It gave the game a tension where money was actually important and necessary, and I felt like I enjoyed going about my day to earn it. It wasn't hard for me to earn 2k because I participated in one of the side quests where I was fishing for the right capsule gem. That set alone is worth 1050 Yuan. They're in a few herb sets and it should be not too bad. Same with a later part of the game. Just sold some herb sets that I had been acquiring. Suzuki himself said he wanted you to go to different places and shop around and see what the best places are in terms of price.

I also trained for about 2-3 hours every morning so the fights were pretty easy to me, but I was a backer who got the XXsquarex2 flying kick, and it felt OP.

I feel like a lot of people are older now, or don't have the time for a game that's a slow burn, or to just mindfully enjoy a game anymore. There's always the next thing to keep up with and experience. I feel fortunate that I grew up with this game, and kind of prioritized part 3 in my gaming time.

I wrote this in another post, but going from S3, to playing the beginning of Death Stranding is super jarring. I have gone from a super lived in world to something so desolate. It made me appreciate the details and dialogue even more.

Anyone have any thoughts on HDR in this game? It seems to support it, but might not be built for it judging by how the intro area looks?

My thoughts after finishing Shenmue III (on PS4 with Japanese voice/English subs):

- I'm impressed with how much they nailed the Shenmue atmosphere and feel. It's kind of surreal at times. This was so important to do right.

- I'm guessing they feared the game would be too short so they added unnecessary padding. Having some tedious work elements is part of the Shenmue experience but this game takes it too far; the fighting levelling system brings down the pacing.

- The new music is great but not quite as catchy or memorable as previous tunes.

- Maybe it's because I fear the series being cancelled but I wish this game furthered the story more than it did.

- Overall as a huge Shenmue fan, I'm satisfied with game and it's a miracle it exists and turned out as well as it did. It's my least favourite of the three Shenmue game because of padding issues and not being quite as memorable, though.

I've played part of 1 and none of 2. I bought this game on sale. Is the little recap video in 3 good enough to dive in without going back to the others? I already own them but at the rate I play I'll never get to 3.

did not watch the recap but you really should play the other games first. They're not super long compared to average games today and they have less padding than 3.

I didn't make that mistake, but I didn't realize until over half way though the game that there was more than 1 page of herbs to sell and the subsequent pages pay more. The most you can make on the first page is 50 (?) Yuan for one of the herb sets, but the later pages the sets go up to 600. You need to use L & R triggers to switch pages.

There is no HDR support on any platform.

trying to get more tokens but everything is so luck based. Fortune teller is so tedious. They don't let you farm in the arena, eh.

I really strongly disliked the stamina system at first, but as time went on I started to love it. I would hate to see it be removed in a future game, but I do think it needs refinement. The meter should drain a bit more slowly (especially if you just walk) and food should give perhaps even double of what it does. They can make everything more expensive to balance this out.

I also seriously want my cola drinking animation back. They could have little meal cutscenes for different locations around the world in Shenmue IV, that would be neat.

Chobu is a sight to behold. Took me 3 days to finally get a lead as to how to progress the game (probably should have spent less time looking around!)
I've been grabbing random bits for the collections as well to get more skill scrolls which has been fun, as has the hidden collectible hunt (one of the best implemented in a game I've played). That and they waste no time introducing fighting arena's which also pleases me.
Managed to score several lucky hit prizes for scrolls, the yellow digger thing was a pain to win but I managed it in the end!

Oh, I have one huge issue with the English translation (and by extension the English voice dub) - anyone tried calling a certain friend in Japan? You know one that might require a certain password to speak to? The English translation fucked up and changed the wording on the password. Which I find a huge mistake that should really have been caught (weird as the game is great on acknowledging the two past games). Japanese voice track has Ryo saying the same password as he did in Shenmue 1, so I'm curious - which game screwed up the translation - 1 or 3? (I'm leaning toward 3).

Anyway, game is still a blast to play, incredibly relaxing and I'm loving the new area especially with a reason to investigate each shop you come across, I can see it taking me something like an in game month to fully make it through this place just so I can collect as much as possible!

I still have the game shrinked wrapped...going through Disc 3 of Shenmue 2 on Dreamcast.

Does the game uses the save from the HD collection if you played it? Might be a game changer to redo both games to me.

Nothing imports from the HD Collection. You start with a few items from the past games in your inventory but they are the same regardless of whether or not you've played previous ones.

For those having redemption issues with your backer code (it says code is valid, but gives you nothing), I was emailed today saying they believe they have figured out the issue and will be updating the game soon. No ETA, but if you've been waiting to start like I am it sounds like it won't be much longer.

Do we know what the DLC packs will be outside of the casino? I love the game but kind of rather wait to get everything on Steam together next year.

Just got to Niaowu, really satisfying shift in atmosphere and place. I'm pretty excited to explore here, though I kinda regret leaving Guilin so quickly. Feel like I should have stuck around to finish more stuff up.

Chobu + expensive rod can get some nice money for little effort. Which in turn is funneled back into getting the deceptively rare Excite QTE 3 toy for my collection! I've barely moved the story along, mainly just been training or completing the collectible requirements to get more move scrolls. I actually really love the gameplay loop in 3 the most out of 1-3, there's just something really satisfying about tying all the shops, items, toys etc. to training which has been fleshed out nice in order to get you training more. Also, the rain in the city area looks and sounds so nice, I didn't get much rain in the village so its been a treat. Just waiting on my Forklift now...

Just got to the guestbook and man... that evoked a lot of emotions. So nice to see so many people treasuring the Shenmue games the same way I did over the years.

I was kinda taken aback by how detailed some of the phone calls have been with reciting obscure characters from Shenmue 1 when talking to some of them.
Like Goro calling Hisaka-san "big sister" since he's still not married Mai yet.

I was really tempering my expectations for Niaowu. Although, now that I've taken a look around it's actually substantial bigger than I expected. Pretty happy with what they accomplished here.

We know one focuses on story with the return of a character from a previous game
Zhang from Shenmue 2 (Yuanda Zhu's associate)
and one is focused on fighting/battling.

Thank you!! This is the only other post ive seen about this issue. I was like saying the password outloud and it really threw me for a loop when the changed the wording for the last one. Its such a minor thing but it really took me out.

I was also saying it out loud while reading the subs, and got very confused very quick! That said, the actual phone conversations are excellent. Its another nice little nod to the past games (when translated properly!)

What do we even get from redeeming the backer code anyway? I haven't even tried lol
Infinite phone card - for those international calls. And its well worth using it. There's also some other items you get, but the phone card is the main thing I wanted (because now I can spend all my free money on capsule toys)

the phone calls are neat. They even show vids in case you don't remember their names. I didn't compare old VA to new but Tom (JP) is kinda off. Must be a new VA.

Really? He sounded close to what I remember, only his Japanese was better since moving back to America lol. I quite like Ine-san's new Japanese VA as well (I assume they are all using new ones - especially Guizhang - since his Japanese VA is Solid Snake himself who probably isn't cheap, and has been busy working with Sega on Yakuza 7 currently!)

Finished the game earlier. Went in expecting some cut corners and compromise, left surprised by what was accomplished given the circumstances.

First off, worries of poor graphics/animation should be put to rest. Thanks to UE4 and the art style drawn up, the game definitely has its moments. A limited, but more than acceptable current gen experience visually.

Enjoyed the battle system. Literally dial a combo, but it works. Love testing out which moves chain well with others. Throws and some sort of parry/counter system would really make it complete. Dodge system is pretty clean, but parry is needed.

Most importantly, Yu and team somehow managed to recapture the spirit of the old games, which I thought was going to be the hardest thing to do. The environments, exploration, the quests, the activities, the NPCs and their daily schedules are all classic Shenmue. Even the old school broken voice acting is there and still has its charm lol.

Definitely understand complaints about the ending since we end up exactly where we started, but i'm satisfied as an old fan of the series. Hope the game does well enough for Shenmue IV to happen, because the foundation is there for an epic Shenmue II like follow up.

I still can't redeem my in-game backer code (PC version). Is there any news whatsoever? I have tried contacting them through KS, direct email, through Deep Silver, Fangamer, etc, and have gotten no help.

If you are talking about the issue (on PC) where your backer code only unlocks the rewards for your tier, instead of for your tier and all the tier rewards below that, then a load of us on the Shenmue Dojo sent in details of the issue near release and they replied asking for more information (version number, backer code, tier etc). Early last week we received a reply saying that they are working on a fix. Hopefully we will hear something from them soon.

Slowly progressing with the main plot, I keep getting distracted! I gotta say, this game is perhaps my favourite ever when it comes to day to day gameplay, having routines and all that stuff - Its the only time ever I think I like grinding in a game, because A) it doesn't feel like grinding because its fun and B) it just makes sense plot wise, Ryo needs to train hard if he'll ever defeat anyone stronger than a low level gangster. And that's why I really love the arena in this game - feels great going up the ranks in Rose Garden, some of these funky kick attacks knock people on their ass, I've really gotten to loving the combat in this game for what it is.

I also continue to love how all the side stuff is more relevant to training this time - scrolls unlocked by getting herbs, playing mini games like Smart Ball or Lucky Hit, capsule toys etc. It ticks a lot of boxes for me, I love doing the side stuff but I love it even more when they give me a good reason to do it.

So yeah, even if the main plot is thinner than past games, I just can't stop playing and enjoying this game world. With a few more NPCs here and there to add to the atmosphere it could have been absolutely perfect, but as is its still damn good.

I was enjoying myself last night, focusing on sparring and had just maxed out the one-inch punch and my PS4 Pro randomly shut off and had to be unplugged and plugged back in. No auto save, either. :( I hope my PS4 isn't messed up. We're at the point where buying another PS4 with the PS5 around the corner seems really wasteful. Don't wanna go a year without playing this game.
