I was browsing some Injustice 2 videos last night on my iPad and just like that in the ‘Recommendation’ side bar a Devil May Cry V thumbnail with MASSIVE spoiler title shows up courtesy of the racist and misogynist dipshit troll, Shirrako. Rest assured, I was adequately furious, nay, feeling murderous.
In the past, I had chosen the option, “Not interested in this channel” for his content while using chrome on laptop. Apparently, YT's algorithm did not get the memo.
Unfortunately, for iOS (and for Android as well), one is relegated to using the official app (for iOS there are no alternatives) to get the best viewing results. As such, there are no ways to block content or ads (afaik) by using extensions.
So, I immediately proceeded to go his channel and select, “block user”. And lo’ and fuckin’ behold, I discover that it does NOT block the channel but rather blocks the user from commenting on your videos. The amorality of YT’s setup really dawned on me.
Given YT’s history of courting alt-right and open spoiler content in gaming to drive a click driven economy, what are the best ways to deal with it? Because sure as shit, if YT have not done anything up to now, they are not going to suddenly start.
I honestly believe that game publishers should issue notices of DMCA to those channels that do Let’s Plays and its kin that use blatantly spoiler thumbnails or/and titles to promote their content.
Update: After much reading, while DMCA has been a go to solution for many corporations which has seen its share of abuse, a better solution would be gate these kinds of content from the uploader's side by stating what is or is not an open spoiler. For a corporation that is pushing "gaming" and already having "YT gaming", this should not be a difficult filter to add.
