Resident Evil doesn't need zombies. The series has enough creative people behind it to not have to lean on boring zombies as a crutch. I can't be the only one who's no longer surprised or intimidated by zombies in games. We know their rules and how they work, and that predictability and lack of mystique makes them as interesting as a cave full of Zubats. The Alien franchise is kind of in a similar boat to me. The xenomorph worked best when it was an unknown threat where you didn't know what it was and what it was capable of, but subsequent iterations in the franchise felt like going through the motions. Probably why Aliens decided to compensate for it in volume, and by moving away from the horror tone.
When I think about my time with Resident Evil, the most memorable moments were with the bombastic bosses, the dogs jumping through the window, the parasite bursting out of the villagers, the lickers, the stalker enemies like Bakers or Nemesis, etc. When I think of the worst parts, it's having to waiting for zombies to get back up, waiting for zombies to slowly walk to the right side of a hallway so you can slip past the other side, or playing that annoying "will this corpse get up as soon as I walk past it" song and dance when passing zombies on the floor. If Capcom said they were never doing zombies again, I wouldn't even miss 'em.
