I would argue that the poll reflects that people are afraid of discussion because no matter how subtly they express their view they risk being banned or called a sexist or something. They aren't afraid to express themselves in a poll though.
So you say the discussion is warranted, but this is a toxic environment for discussion -- Thus the poll. And what we're left with is a discussion that's largely either an echo chamber or drive by trolling, both of which accomplish little or nothing in the way of changing anyone's opinion or informing anyone of anything

I actually put a lot of stock in the fact attitudes are, albeit slowly, changing. Indie games are way ahead, and even though TLOU2 (unreasonably) caught a shit load of flack for its characters, it was a big hit when just 10 years ago developers were "scared" of female leads for not selling.
Regretablly this is still a boy's industry; but the more it changes (and it will) the better.

Respectfully, I don't know what a thread having a lot of replies matters to my point. The majority opinion on this forum is still that sexy costumes on characters are fine, as illustrated clearly by this poll, but this generally isn't reflected in the replies. I'm bringing this up to highlight the discrepancy and saying why I think that is.
(For what it's worth, I'm pretty indifferent on whether male or female characters are sexualized in games. I enjoy TLOU2 which does not sexualize its characters, and I also enjoy Nier Automata which does. I'm all for letting creators do what they want)
Does that have much to do with an echo chamber or that these are the same types of conversations that you aren't going to have in public either? Because people will shame you if you start defending a game character needing to show their ass to matter.

I consume NSFW content as much as the next guy. I have no shame in saying I view porn, it's healthy, I get it. That being said, I don't need to see Cammy's ass poking out. I don't need cheesecake bleeding over into video games because there's enough out in the 18+ category for me to look at.

MK changed the female character designs, with the usual suspects howling in rage and calling for a boycott. The thing is MKX and MK11 have both sold over 10 million copies. MK11 even has a good chance of becoming the 2nd best selling fighting game. This all well above what SFV and T7 have sold.
The idea that the ass shots and fetish costumes need to stay in or else SF would bomb doesn't hold water.

It seems like Max referred a lot of the sexualization and recent Street Fighter games as "Ononess" in today's stream. Though he made it clear that Ono was likely not the sole reason for the sexualization, it seems like he played a major role in said sexualization being present (this tied into the Ono brand of goofiness Max spoke of in his stream). I'd grab a clip if I wasn't in the middle of a RFA workout right now.
I'm all for them making and depicting characters in whatever way they want, as long as they are prepared for any and all backlash that comes from doing it. Like, every time the whole "boner culture" sort of shit pops around it's like...you can make a girl cute or hot or sexy having them next to naked or jutting their ass or tits out to the camera all the time. MK11 put Kitana in a blue bodysuit with a slim figure and that didn't stop the internet from screaming "STEP ON ME QUEEEEEEEEN". It's not actually that hard, you just have actually have to put a brain cell or two together instead of just constantly sticking with your most juvenile and basic urges.

This is something I've been thinking about off and on for a little while now. There are threads on this forum that have devolved into, essentially, some members taking shots at others due to polls suggesting that people on the forum don't care about a particular issue, or worse, think differently about it. The polls themselves are so often undercooked to the point of being unreliable indicators of much of anything, but let that slide for a moment. These posters then argue that the forum sucks, or that the moderation sucks, because such people are clearly allowed to *exist* on the forum, but don't get their deserved ban because they don't post about their opinions. To make things more confusing, it's usually suggested that we simply *must* have conversations about these things, but then the people who would have the opposing viewpoints don't post. They don't post for the obvious reason that is, more often than not, their opinion isn't 1) welcome, or 2) wanted. The lack of these people posting is then interpreted, I think incorrectly, as a lack of people caring about an issue. Sadly, I think it does mean that they care about the issue, but that they totally disagree with a premise.
In other words, does it seem to you that polls and Era's reaction to certain kinds of opinions have produced a chilling effect in which posters with gross opinions are allowed to continue being on the forum so long as they do not produce gross opinions in any form that isn't via a poll? If so, is that -- and I say this with all due respect to how serious these problems can be -- as problematic as we want to believe? Like, I'd personally rather have a forum where there are nasty opinions that people don't feel comfortable sharing but those people are present on the forum, than one where people do feel comfortable sharing their nasty opinions (and are summarily banned). The later seems like it is far more debilitating in terms of outcome, though I could be wrong.
Either way, it would maybe be a good idea to retire polls on the forum for these reasons. They are used very often to be indicative of a problem in Era's user base, or as a way to circumvent rules about having shitty opinions, but without context I don't see how the polls can be healthy or useful. But I'm curious about your take on it, since you seem to have put some thought into this as well.
