Sigourney Weaver and Ridley Scott has both praised New Jersey's North Bergen High School for their performance of Alien, Scott stated he is willing to pay for an encore performance.

My favorite director @Sir_RidleyScott just gave the North Bergen Drama Club his official endorsement for "Alien: The Play"! Thank you Mr. Scott for making Alien and allowing us to share it with a new generation! Gladiator: The Play in 2020! YES!

In what is some of the highest praise so far, Sigourney Weaver on Thursday said she loved that a New Jersey high school undertook the monster task of staging 1979's Alien.

The North Bergen High School Drama Club staged the play earlier this month; the production went viral when footage from impressed parents made its way onto social media. Needless to say, fans of the horror/sci-fi franchise reacted strongly. Weaver, who played the iconic Ellen Ripley in a number of installments, was among those fans.

"I saw a bit of your production of Alien, and I just want to say it looked incredible," the actress said in a video shared by the official Fox franchise YouTube account. "You put so much heart and soul into that. The alien, I must say, looked very real to me."

Weaver went on to say that there were others from the franchise who were also impressed by the kids' innovation and work.

"I just wanted to send our compliments. Not only from me but from James Cameron and the original screenwriter, Walter Hill," she said. "We all say bravo. Well done. "And just one more thing — you know the alien might still be round, so when you're opening your locker, just do it very slowly...."

The students and staff posted a thank you to Weaver for her kind words.

Another Alien name also reached out to the kids and play directors: director Ridley Scott.

Scott also said he would pay for an encore performance. The students accepted and Cuervo said details are being worked out.

Well even before Ridley Scott stepped up the mayor of North bergen already made an announcement they'll put up funding to have an encore performance.

Just announced! By popular demand, more performances of #alien will take place at @nbergenschools in the near future! @News12NJ #AlienThePlay
Funny that Scott is suggesting they try their hand at Gladiator. Regardless of what the theater team does I hope it is project where the set designs don't take another 8 months to produce. I don't like the idea that any of the senior students might graduate before they could enjoy coming together with the younger students for another project they started.

And this is how you encourage creativity among kids.

Very pleased that Ridely Scott got the positive word out before some over eager lawyer at Fox fired off a C&D.

I honestly wonder how the legality of all this works. Certainly, now that Ridley Scott and others have spoken out in support they should avoid any legal troubles, but these companies can be surprisingly strict when it comes to high school theatre and show rights.

I'm more concerned about future projects than this one.

In a NY Times article it was disclosed that in the previous year the directing duo had the high school do George Romero's Night of the Living Dead. Undoubtedly they would attempt to recreate another classic film but next time Hollywood studios will be paying attention.

I'm sure Disney/Fox are well aware of the bad PR that would come with a Cease and Desist to a bunch of high school kids.

The legal side is that you have to get permission to perform an adaptation. Schools have a bit more leeway if it is educational and not-for-profit due to fair use.

Ultimately, it's like any other use of licensed IP. Get permission, or make sure it is fair use. This likely falls under fair use, but fair use is a defense. It doesn't preempt a claim. Just allows you to fight one.

A smart company would see both the fair use claim (and the positive PR) and let it be, as Fox did here. Having a lawyer C&D wouldn't be surprising tho.

Wonderful story......glad to see that the principal creators of the franchise have stepped in to lend some encouragement and praise. I hope Weaver and Scott get to see the production at some point.

If they had made a play about Mario or Zelda, Nintendo would have just sent them a Cease & Desist letter and called it a day.

Night of the Living Dead is actually in the public domain. There is no copyright holder to speak of. Between that and the fact that the film almost entirely takes place in a single location, it would almost be the perfect film to adapt as a high school play.

Fair enough to point out that NotLD is public domain but they still made two plays back to back based on classic movies.

I suspect next year they will try another movie again and this time around more people will be scrutinizing what they choose to do. I hope this doesn't turn sour. Next year could be the start of a new theater scene blooming in that area or it could all turn to ash because too many ambitions clashed over the production.

Night of the Living Dead is public domain so that one should be safe, but Alien is most definitely a copyrighted work.

Didn't see the NZ shooter pic?
My 25 year old Moroccon coworker did this two weaks ago with other coworkers and friends. Even sent pictures via whatsapp. Doubt he's much of a white power guy. The circle below the waist here also looks like a case of 'haha, made you look'. Not everyone knows of it's white power connotation.

On topic. Gonna have to look up the clips. Alien as a play? And it works? Well? Awesome.

There’s literally zero chance that’s what this is.

That was 15 years ago, and this is today.
If you google 'circle game meme' a LOT of stuff shows up with people holding the circle next to their thigh. From a bit more recent than 15 years ago. This was huge on youtube a couple months back. There's literally a more than zero percent chance that's what this is.

Lol, you have no idea what you’re talking about. Just looking to be angry. It’s the fucking circle game. High school kids still play it to this day. I know it has other connotations these days, but the kid is a member of a fairly diverse drama club. You really think there’s a zero percent chance those drama kids have the circle game going on?

If he was holding the sign up or above his waist, fine, but the circle game on the thigh has been a thing forever and I know kids still goof around with it. I understand the concern, but not everyone is a milkshake duck.

Some people were saying there could be some legal issues for the school

I tried telling these people that they would get off scott free, but they wouldn’t listen. :/

I can confirm the circle game is alive and well today.. and most kids think it’s new. I always have to tell them it’s been around for decades.

Pretty sure you have no idea what you're talking about and haven't stepped foot in a classroom in long while. The circle game is still played to this day. So, let's not try and jump to hasty conclusions.
Yeah this game is literally still being played today, and it's definitely not meant in any way other than people seeing it and getting punched. The white nationalist movement's bread and butter is turning innocuous, acceptable symbols into signals of racism and supremacy, it is literally in their handbook.

Just went to a wedding last weekend and the groom and some of the other groomsmen were still playing it.

It's not like it disappeared.
