Should just stop doing parties. If you want to experience hired attractive models, just go to a high-end night club.

Seems like a lot of people here don't get out much. This is the norm whether you find it sad or not. Get outside more often an this would not surprise you

Guess I need to spell it out for you. Hire women to keep the men happy and not becuse of thier ability.

REFER TO THE FIRST POST YOU MADE NOT THIS ONE IM QUOTING.

Why are we yelling?

I get what you're saying. I'm saying it's still better than nothing. Letting employees escape self reflection on their workspace helps no one. Maybe they will be more likely to consider qualified women if they realize having an all male workspace is boring socially?

Being a model does not make you a prostitute. Unfortunately, many models are harassed and assaulted because guys assume this to be an automatic transition.

They're basically acting. No different from a bar promoter or a cute bartender designed to get patrons chatting and drinking.

yeah, i dont think it's that weird to hire models for your party, or inherently wrong or bad or whatever. like it makes sense...i guess (like other people said, probably try to hire more women first...), but I am worried about this kind of thing leading to some sort of harassment or assault

Not everyone needs every social event to be sexually charged, especially ones that at are work related. It being incredibly common is not even an argument, it's a flaccid excuse because there are many common things that society has reevaluated as time goes on.

Pretty gross posts in this threads assuming that the hired models will agree to sex because they are paid to be there. Yikes.. Is this the kind of mental image that some resetera posters have about models?

While a bit different, a lot of high end parties hire hosts like this and it never end in Caligula orgies because someone drank a beer. They usually entertain folks or provide bottle service, things like that.

I thought this was a pretty well-known thing already. Regardless, I don't really see the issue. If anything, the poor dorks at the company are the suckers here.
Jesus Christ that's fucking sad. Also fucking dangerous paying people to be nice to some random guys.. how long til someone gets the wrong end of the stick and does something they shouldn't?!
Urgh.
Being nice to random dweebs is a big part of your job as a model. It's just another paid gig.

I'm genuinely not sure how this is a surprise to some. My friend is a model and this happens all week long, every week of the year. Hospitals, companies, law firms, birthdays, all kinds of groups hire paid models to serve hors d'oeurves and drinks at fancy parties. George Clooney had one for one of his product lines and my friend was contracted to smile for 4 hours and greet people in his suit. They're a pleasant face that exists just for aesthetic as opposed to "ugly" people serving you food. It's a luxury people pay for. I don't really have any other reaction to this besides "so what?"

Stuck out to me too, like I posted earlier. What is triggering all these not-so-subtle "Model == Escort / Hooker" posts?

this is demeaning to both men and women, jesus christ

How so? Being model is demeaning to gender(s) or being hired to work an event is or ..?

Edit: Saw your 2nd post just now. I can see where you are coming from with that argument.

Yeah, they won't stick out like a sore thumb.

You'd be surprised. One of the women I worked with at an ISP in the support department was a glamour model and had been in FHM. She had natural good looks and you wouldn't know it but she didn't come to work in full glamour makeup. She eventually became a DBA but there's no reason in large companies why good looking people would look out of place.

This sounds so sad. Though I work in an environment with women (accounting firm).

This as well.

If worked at a law firm that needed to hire women for their parties. I'd really think about working somewhere else.

This has been a thing for a long ass time. I remember my first industry event during a GDC meetup routinely asking what company so and so worked for and getting "oh im just contracted for the night" replies. It was pretty funny if not a little frustrating. Also the assumption that the women who do work in tech are frumpy or not model gorgeous going on in this thread is a bit.... imma sip on my coffee and let that thought go.

I'm not saying it's an excuse. But to make a thread specifically about just about Silicon Valley is weird. That's all I'm saying. He could of made the thread about corporate parties in general.

I get out plenty. Events and clubs that this is the "norm" at in NYC are full of garbage people and are generally awful places to be which most people avoid like the plague.

The weird thing about that is that someone like her could go to this party and most would assume she's just a hired model instead of an actual co-worker.

Who is surprised? This is just business as usual for misogynistic tech companies. Not sure why you are trying to normalize this behavior. It needs to be called out and fixed.

Why not just hire more female engineers? You want to make it a boys club, well this is what you get.

Imagine the stink from the thread discussing female engineers that would require model looks to get the job.

It's a business transaction where you buy good looking company, that's the only thing wanted.

This is new levels of pathetic. When I'm going to a Christmas party I want to chat and have drinks with my coworkers, not some random strangers. Take them out to a club some other time of the year if they're that desperate to mingle.

A better idea would be to just have a joint Christmas party between the tech company and the modeling agency.

Silicon Valley already did this one.

Why don't you code monkeys get real and just hire a bunch of strippers?

Hiring a bunch of sexy ladies to stand around and talk - they're not your therapists-, as opposed to hiring a bunch of sexy ladies to not just stand around and talk but also get their ta ta's out and do some twerking.

Who y'all kidding? The method they are doing is probably MORE sexist.

There's a big difference between pretty people being hired to be bartenders/servers/etc. That happens everywhere. What it sounds like is these people are being paid to be guests at the party and act like thy're just somebodies friend. You know the hot girl serving you a cheese plate is paid to be there, not the hot girl who say she's Dave's friend.

I think the problem isn't with the paid partygoers as much as tech companies are sausagefests that need to hire paid partygoers to even out the gender imbalance at parties.

The part about specifically pretending to be friends is really creepy and shitty.

Otherwise I wouldn't have a problem with it, I take no issue with sex workers and don't shame them.

While the practice is slightly creepy, it's also nothing new really. What I find way more disturbing is how some people's thoughts in this thread immediately jump to prostitution or sexual assault. THIS is actually fucking gross and highly disrespectful to both the models and the engineers.

I remember Brad Shoemaker commenting on this when he went to an afterparty of Notch's like 6 years ago. He thought it was really weird and obvious.
