I'm super hyped for SMTV! Hoping for a 2nd quarter 2018 release, this game would fit in that gap nicely for me. ^_^

the European announcement makes me think Nintendo has a hand in the game, either by publishing or distribution

Doesn't look like it, Deep Silver/Koch Media is handling the retail release in Europe, same for Persona 5. From this announcement, I would say the chance of having EFIGS localization are not very high, unless maybe Nintendo push Atlus in that direction more than Sony did for P5.

not really? it's kinda normal in SMT for the protags to die in some manner. this isnt the series to shy away from stuff like this

i mean yeah, but getting torn apart by a demon? pretty hardcore stuff. hopefully it sets the tone for the rest of the game

The giant dick and balls monster was shown at the switch conference and they didn't even give out a warning before showing the trailer. Pretty sure the trailer is rated to be E for everyone as well.

mara is inherent to SMT, cant not have him around

IMO, Medusa suffers from the same issue as all other bad new designs : they are overdesigned, with little details and hooks absolutely everywhere. The main characteristics of Kaneko's designs is how sober they are, with usually one of two feature accentuated (e.g. Pale skin + black lips for his human designs).
Most new designs clash horribly with this; the few good new designs are also a bit more sober. Doi's redesigns for A also dialed back on the amount of stuff going on on the designs, which worked far better.

Yeah, Doi corrected a lot of the original designs' flaws in Apocalypse, but I agree that they could be further simplified. They're still very good, however, unlike the originals in IV. Matching Kaneko's Nocturne-era designs, the culmination of over a decade of work on the series, will be a difficult task for anyone.

Two months actually. I think that's realistic to expect for SMTV, but if you're expecting worldwide release, keep dreaming. Ask any MegaTen fan, they know, lol.
God, that time where Atlus US released Persona 3... After 3 FES was already out in Japan...

Or even further than that that time where there was talk of releasing Devil Summoner in english on the Saturn... And years later rumors of the PSP localization... Sigh.

Or when they made everyone nervous about what we came to know as SMTIV Apocalypse and took about 6 months to announce the localization for it. I think part of the reason for that was the name change, which there was a detailed blog post about and they had many internal arguments about what to change the name to.

Obviously Strange Journey Redux seemed like a much easier name to come up with, since they couldn't really keep "Deep Strange Journey" since that sounds like a porn title.

I loved Persona 5 this year so I'm interested in this game
I don't know if you have ever played an SMT game, but just be warned that while this does share some similarities with Persona games (the demons, the battle system being based on exploiting weaknesses, fusion, etc.), it's definitely not the same type of tone as a Persona game, at least not modern Persona.

That said, you might even end up liking this more.

Nice to have it confirmed, and hopefully I can get into this one (couldn't on 3DS for some reason).

Good stuff. Announcing the localization relatively early is a good sign.

Here's hoping they really learned their lesson from P5 and try to collaborate more with Atlus USA during development instead of them having to wait until the game is near completion.

I wouldn't call them sober. Some are very intricate and detailed. I believe the clean lines and the modest use of shadows make Kaneko's design more "tidy".

just look at this

I love Kaneko's demons and characters, but Doi's are quite great too. All of the main demons for Apocalypse were fantastic, and for the most part aesthetically don't clash with Kaneko's demons and fit in pretty well. SMTIV's issue was all guest artists handling demons most of which were all super important main boss demons. Those almost universally sucked save for one or two.

I will be incredibly happy if Doi is responsible for everything in V and would not mind at all if he updated some of the older demons that have no gotten a redesign in quite sometime.

Super excited for this game. I'm not expecting it until 2019, but it's nice that they got the formality of announcing it out of the way early (especially for Europe).

For those coming from Persona 3-5 and interested in SMT, these are some differences between recent Persona and (most) recent SMTs to take in mind:
  • No high school setting
  • No calendar/deadlines
  • No social links
  • Darker story
  • Its battle system revolves around abusing (de)buffs and opponent's weaknesses even more than Persona's One More system
  • You use demons instead of personas, they are separate party members instead of just giving the protagonist skills and elemental resistances
  • You recruit demons via negotiation, they may just ask questions, kind of like in Persona 5, but they also ask you for money/items/HP and may run away with your stuff

SMT V is one of my most anticipated games and I hope it comes out no later than 2019. I loved IV and really liked Apocalypse and Nocturne.

Don't think there was any doubt about localisation, but really happy to see it confirmed (and rather soon after the formal announcement). Hope it's not too far off!

For what it's worth, from a gameplay perspective, Persona 5 is the closest to SMT the series has ever been.

Day 1 for sure. I hope many great JRPGs make it to the switch, as they did to the 3DS.

well, the series has never been on particularly strong hardware. Switch and UE4 finally gives them a chance to have blood and guts spilled with lovingly rendered physically based materials

Nice to have more turn based RPGs available on the big screen! Maybe this will be the first mainline SMT I'll manage to beat...

Curious to see how UE4 works out for Atlus. Never in a million years did I think I would have Tim Sweeney to thank for all these fantastic Japanese games this gen.

I mean relatively speaking, it was on appropriate hardware for the time when it was on consoles. But since the 3DS boomed, its obviously fallen off.

I am so confused by this game. Why does none of this stuff say exclusively for Switch or Only on Switch? Didn't they say that at some point? They certainly had it all over P5.

Anyway ready to play this when it is released.

I don't think Nintendo plays things up like that any more. 3DS games never boasted about being exclusive.

I don't think Octopath Traveller really says it's exclusive either.

Glad to hear, I have a strong feeling there will be plenty of interesting RPG exclusives on the Switch in the coming year. With this, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Project Octopath Traveler there's plenty of variety in the genre already.

Neat, I really liked that the devs mentioned they want to have the best of Nocturne and SMTIV / Apocalypse. Just give me snappy and stylish battle animations or ability to skip.

I can't wait. I know it was basically assumed we'd get it from the start but it's really nice to have an official announcement so early in development.
