Honestly it's really disappointing how this land is entirely focused only on the sequel trilogy era. They don't even have prequel or original trilogy characters walking around, apart from Chewbacca.
No Luke, Vader, or Obi-Wan. It's weird.
While the land is indeed set in the sequel time period, don't forget that Hondo is the main character of the Falcon attraction and the meat in the market is getting roasted by a podracer engine. So while it largely stars sequel characters, the past is acknowledged in a few areas. The general decor feels very OT inspired, and the market specifically feels very Phantom Menace.
But I'm not bothered by their decision with the walking characters. You still get storm troopers and imperial officers (excuse me, first order officers) marching around barking at guests, you got people in Endor camo directing lines, there's a full sized falcon and a full sized x-wing and the cantina looks like ANH and plays the jizz you'd expect it to. There's still OT and PT mixed into their ST trappings (as you'd expect).
You're just going to see Kylo walking around instead of Vader. But Vader can still be found over at Launch Bay.
And Kylo's entrance is pretty sweet because smoke starts pouring out of his shuttle's ramp and he comes out of it.
It was worth it and the work put into the environment is amazing but the actual ride part could be better. The line leading up to it is pretty cool as far as lines go. Nice environments, and much of it is by windows that give you an eyeful of the full size falcon parked outside. Once you reach the final waiting area you're given boarding pass seat assignments, and are actually waiting
inside the falcon (obviously not the one parked outside) in the room with the holochess. Then once your boarding assignment is called, you go down a hallway to enter the cockpit. Which feels a bit surreal.
Just imagine a Star Tours kind of ride except you can slightly affect what happens on screen and you get a score at the end. Me and my partner were both running on 3 hours of sleep and got pilot's duties so you can believe there was some crashing haha.
I think the addition of a game component is fun but I think the events happening on-screen in that game could be way more exciting than they are. I was expecting some run ins with things we know from the series, but the whole thing is basically just a train heist vaguely inspired by that scene in the Solo movie. I wish more familiar things and characters were incorporated into the ride like Star Tours does. Miscellaneous train heist is not very memorable.
The front two seats are pilots, one controls up/down and the other controls left/right. Second two seats I think are the gunners, back two seats are the engineers. Basically, the ride blinks lights to tell you what to press and you do it. But it was fun as hell to be a pilot because not only do you get blinky buttons, you also get control sticks.
I think the most fun seat is probably front right side. You get to control up/down and also pull the hyperdrive lever.
I got to pull that lever (you know the one) to activate the hyperdrive and then watch the stars swirl. My neckbeard grew three sizes that day (okay I don't have a neckbeard but you can take my meaning that this nerd was excited).
So I liked it but there's room for improvement. If they could redo the videogame portion to be a little more star toursy in its nostalgia indulgence that'd be swell. And multiple variants would be cool too if they don't have them already (I only went on it once so I wouldn't know).
How is the sound quality on that speaker? I'm thinking about it
The "Try Me" function on them didn't seem to work, don't know what that was about. Maybe there's a switch that needed to be switched to try me mode. So I have no idea how the speaker is.
While I managed to tear myself away and do my wallet a favor, I'm kind of regretting it because R3X is awesome.
I might try to ask someone to pick one up for me if anyone I know goes back soon.
